Signal received from missing Indonesian satellite

Contact has been made with an Indonesian telecommunications satellite which went missing following a failed launch last week, a Russian rocket firm said Monday.

The Telkom 3 and another satellite, Russia’s Express MD2, failed to reach their target orbit due to a failure of the Russian Proton-M rocket’s upper stage.

“Contact with the satellite has been established and is being sustained,” the Reshetnev rocket company, which built the craft, said in a press release.

There’s still time and space for diplomacy on Iran: US

The White House Monday reiterated that there was still “time and space” for diplomacy in dealing with Iran’s nuclear standoff.

Washington, however, vowed to continue the two-track approach of diplomacy and pressure, Xinhua reported.

“We regret that Iran has not yet made a strategic decision to address the international community’s serious concerns regarding its nuclear programme and the ongoing P5-plus-1 talks,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said at a press briefing.

“However, we continue to believe that there is time and space for diplomacy,” he said.

Three killed in shooting near US varsity (Lead)

Three people, including a police officer and the suspected gunman himself, were killed and several injured in a shooting incident near a university campus in Texas, media reports said.

The incident happened Monday afternoon near the Texas A&M University campus in College Station city, Xinhua reported citing local TV channel ABC13.

Police confirmed that 41-year-old constable Brian Bachmann and an unidentified civilian male were killed.

The shooting occurred around 12.45 p.m. A resident of the area said he heard about 30 gunshots. CNN said the entire ordeal lasted around 15 minutes.

Blood test to detect Alzheimer’s disease in offing

A blood test is in the offing to detect Alzheimer’s disease, researchers at Emory University say.

“Reliability and failure to replicate initial results have been the biggest challenge in this field. We demonstrate here that it is possible to show consistent findings,” says William Hu, assistant professor of neurology at Emory University School of Medicine, who led the study.

80 confirmed cases of dengue in Bengal

As many as 80 confirmed cases of dengue have been reported so far in West Bengal, a senior health official said Friday.

“So far there are 80 patients who have been confirmed as suffering from dengue. We are keeping a close watch on the situation,” director of health services B.R. Satpathy told IANS.

According to Satpathy, 64 of these are from Kolkata, 14 from North 24 Parganas district and two from other parts of the state.

For the last few days, several people from in and around Kolkata have been admitted to several hospitals with symptoms similar to dengue.
