Puerto Rican held for killing two in US

A Puerto Rican man wanted for the murders of his girlfriend and her mother 32 years ago in Pennsylvania was arrested in Puerto Rico, police said Thursday.

Erasmo Cruz Cruz allegedly murdered Deborah Patterson, 17, and Nancy Lee Patterson, 41, Aug 30, 1980.

The 56-year-old Cruz was arrested Wednesday in the Chorrera section of the Romero neighbourhood in Villalba, a city in southern Puerto Rico.

Cruz allegedly threw fire bombs into the Patterson family’s house and then shot Deborah, Nancy and another family member as they ran out to escape from the flames, police said.

BSF trooper killed in cross border firing in Jammu

A Border Security Force (BSF) trooper was killed when Pakistan resorted to “heavy unprovoked firing” on a border post in Jammu and Kashmir, an official said Friday. The firing by Pakistan Rangers took place Thursday night, spreading panic in the area, and continued Friday morning.

Violating a ceasefire, the Rangers opened fire at Abdullian post on the international border (IB), 35 km west of Jammu, with small and heavy arms and also fired mortars killing a soldier identified as Chander Rai, from Assam.

Colombian firm makes oil find

Colombia’s Ecopetrol and two US joint venture partners have discovered oil and gas at a deep-water well in the US Gulf of Mexico, the Bogota-based firm said Thursday.

The discovery is the second by the venture made up of US firms Apache and Stone Energy and Ecopetrol America, the Colombian state oil company’s US subsidiary, in an area Ecopetrol described as “one of the world’s greatest hydrocarbon prospectivity zones”.

Ecopetrol said in a press release that the find was made at the Parmer Prospect, located in the Green Canyon blocks 823 and 867.

Wisconsin gurdwara member shot dead

Less than two weeks after a gunman killed six worshippers at a gurdwara here, a member of the same gurdwara was shot and killed at a neighbourhood market in an apparent robbery attempt.

Milwaukee police said Thursday they are searching for suspects who killed Dalbir Singh, 56, at about 9.10 p.m. Wednesday in what appeared to be an attempted robbery.

The shooting occurred shortly after the Harmony Foods store at W. Locust Street closed, local Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Thursday citing Jatinder Singh, the dead man’s nephew who owns the store.

Neha Sharma, Russian to star in “Yamla Pagla Deewana 2”

Actress Neha Sharma and Russian model Kristina Akheeva will be starring opposite Deol brothers – Bobby and Sunny– respectively in the sequel to hit comedy Yamla Pagla Deewana.

There was a buzz that Bipasha Basu and Katrina Kaif were to feature in the sequel.

But the makers of YPD 2 have announced that they have zeroed in on Neha opposite Bobby and Kristina for Sunny Deol.

Taliban attack Pakistan Air base that stores nuke warheads

(Siasat News)Taliban fighter stormed a high security airbase of Pakistan where 100 nuclear warheads are believed to be stored.

In the attack nine attacker, one soldier dead and Air Commodore Muhammad Azam got injured.

This attack took after US defense secretary warned that the biggest threat is that Pakistan’s N-weapons could fall into the wrong hands.

It is learned that the attacker were wearing military dress with fully automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades.

They fired rocket-propelled grenades that damaged one aircraft.

Farrell’s memory loss

Actor Colin Farrell says he does not remember certain things about his past life and goes blank when trying to remember it.

“There are a few black holes, where minutes and hours and days and weeks and possibly months have vanished,” shortlistmagazine.com quoted Farrell as saying.

However, the 36-year-old who has battled alcohol and drug addiction in the past believes, whatever he has forgotten is probably not very important.

Parliament mourns Deshmukh demise; adjourned for day

Parliament was adjourned for the day today as a mark of respect to senior Congress leader and Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who died on August 14 following multiple organ failure.

Soon after the House of the People met for the day’s business, Speaker Meira Kumar read out an obituary reference for the Congress leader.

The Members stood in silence for a short while to pay homage to Deshmukh. Thereafter, Ms Kumar adjourned the House for the day to mourn his death.

Pak Hindus to get long-term visas if they apply properly: Govt

With several hundred Pakistani Hindus arriving in India following alleged persecution, the government today said they will get long-term visas to stay in the country if they apply under stipulated rules.

“So far, no one has applied for long-term visa. Basically, we have norms for the long-term visa. If they apply under them, they will get it,” Union Home Secretary RK Singh told PTI here.

He was replying to a question on the possibility of India granting long-term visas to those Pakistani Hindus who have come to the country in last few days.

Reforms in police force suggested

Addressing the gathering, former police officer Mr. Anjareya Reddy told that as per the instruction issued by Supreme Court of India, reforms are essential in the police force of A.P. The laws made during the British Period have to be amended.

He told that by following the instruction of Supreme Court, A.P police force must be strengthened.

Milkman who kept a boy as bonded labourer for 10 years was arrested

(Siasat News)Sayeedabad police arrested Sudhakar Yadav the owner of the dairy farm in Sayeedabad. He had kept Mohammed Shafi (23) as a bonded labourer in his dairy farm for the past 10 years. He had also tortured the boy during these years.

Mohammed Refi is from Karnataka State. Sudhakar had kept him as a labourer without paying any remuneration Sayeedabad police had registered a case against Sudhakar.

He was arrested at night yesterday.

Osmania University postpones today’s Exams

(Siasat News)According to a press note issued by Registrar, Osmania University, all the examinations to be held today have been postponed. The dates of these examinations will be announced later.

According to reliable sources, Osmania University Teachers’ Association (OUTA) has organized agitation on mass scale to boycott classes from 16th August against the revengeful attitude of the University authorities in not fulfilling the long pending demands of the teachers.

As a precautionary measure, Registrar of Osmania University has postponed all the examination, were scheduled today.

Olympian archer honoured in Nagaland

Chekrovolu Swuro, the archer from Nagaland who took part in the London Olympics, has been honoured with the first T. Ao State Sports Award.

The award was also given to sports administrator Lanu Toy and Greenwood School.

Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar conferred the awards at a ceremony here Wednesday.

T. Ao was instituted after the Naga People’s Front government reviewed the Nagaland Sports Policy in 2006 to recognise excellence in sports.

Ao was the first Naga Olympian and independent India’s first captain and led the national football team in the 1948 Olympic Games in London.

Colombian oil firm to export 12 mn barrels to India

Colombian oil firm Ecopetrol will supply 12 million barrels of crude to a private Indian refining company under a year-long contract worth approximately $1.2 billion, the Bogota-based company said Wednesday.

“This export contract offers Ecopetrol advantages because it ensures a systematic sale of crude at a pre-arranged price,” the company said, noting that the accord bolsters its “business strategy of supplying crude to end users”.

It also said the direct delivery of crude to buyers gives Ecopetrol “greater control over the crude’s final destination” and “logistical flexibility”.

Indians among illegal immigrants seek relief from deportation

Thousands of young, undocumented immigrants including Indians have began applying for relief under President Barack Obama’s mini DREAM Act that allows them to work without fear of deportation for at least two years.

There are some 30,000 Indians among as many as 1.7 million youths who entered the US illegally as children who may qualify for the programme announced by Obama through an executive order in June, according to the Pew Research Centre.

Non-bailable warrant for Musharraf in Bugti assassination case

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Pakistan Wednesday issued non-bailable arrest warrants for former president Pervez Musharraf and former prime minister Shaukat Aziz in the assassination case of Balochistan leader Nawab Akbar Bugti, Xinhua reported.

Bugti, a Baluch tribal leader, was killed Aug 26, 2006 during a military operation in Baluchistan province when Musharraf was ruling the country.

Pakistan Army, Rangers fire on Indian posts on LoC, border

Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire for second day Wednesday by firing at two Indian positions on the Line of Control (LoC) late evening on India’s Independence Day, army sources said. The fire was returned and the exchange was on till nearly midnight.

The incident occurred a few hours after a Border Security Force (BSF) outpost on the international border was attacked.

The army sources said that Pakistani army opened “unprovoked firing” at Kirpan and Kranti posts on the LoC.
