L N Mishra murder case: SC dismisses plea to quash trial

The Supreme Court today refused to quash the trial in the 1975 murder case of the then Railway Minister L N Mishra, saying proceedings cannot be terminated merely because they have not been concluded in the past 37 years.

A bench of justices H L Dattu and C K Prasad dismissed a plea filed by an accused, 65-year-old advocate Ranjan Dwivedi, who had pleaded that the trial be terminated as it had not been concluded in 37 years and was still going on.

Although the two judges concurred on the issue of dismissing the petition, they differed in their reasoning.

Kanda arrested, sent to 7-day police custody

Former Haryana Minister Gopal Kanda, a fugitive for the past ten days, today surrendered before Delhi Police which arrested him in connection with the Geetika Sharma suicide case and secured a seven-day court remand to question him.

After a dramatic build-up in which his brother was arrested last night, Kanda, who failed to get anticipatory bail from the Delhi High Court yesterday, surfaced at Ashok Vihar Police Station at 4 AM hoodwinking policemen deployed across North-West Delhi to apprehend him.

Threat calls after criticising Mamata

After receiving threat call he filled a police complaint. He made remark during the discussion organized by one of the television channel.

He said that he received a threat call on Wednesday evening by an unidentified person. His wife again received a call on Thursday asking for him.

Goa warns against spread of MMS showing violence

A day after the Goa government reassured people from the northeast of their security, the state police Saturday warned against the spread of an MMS, which shows graphic violence targeting a particular community.

“The spread of such video may hurt religious sentiments of a certain section of the society and may lead to disturbances in otherwise peaceful state,” a statement issued by the Goa Police says.

Kanda surrenders

(Siasat News)Former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, accused of abetting the suicide of former flight attendant Geetika Sharma, surrendered early Saturday at a police station here, an official said.

Kanda had been absconding since Aug 8 after Sharma, 23, blamed him and another official of his now-defunct MDLR Airlines, Aruna Chadha, for harassing her and forcing her to commit suicide. She died on the night of Aug 4-5.

A.S.I. Asif Nagar gets police medal

(Siasat News)Mr. Hasan Ahmed, Assistant Sub-Inspector, Asif Nagar was awarded President’s Police medal in recognition of his meritorious service. Mr. N.Kiran Kumar Reddy, C.M. of A.P. awarded this medal to him at Secunderabad Parade Ground on the occasion of Independence Day on 15th August.

He is the only police officer in the state associated with law and order duties that has been selected for this award.

Mr. Hasan Ahmed was appointed in police service in 1976. He was promoted as Head Constable in 2003 and as Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police in 2009.

EAMCET tentative Counselling schedule released

(Siasat News)A.P high court on Friday directed Admissions and Fee Regulation Committee to fix the fee structure independently; they will meet on Saturday to decide.

The pressure tactics that was adopted by the Chief Minister worked as 724 colleges submitting affidavits to AFRC till Friday accepting Rs.35, 000 as the common fee, while nearly 200 colleges are still to submit affidavits to the AFRC.

The Committee is likely to fix the common fee of Rs.35, 000 as proposed by the government.

However Govt. declared a tentative schedule for the Counselling.

Chinese women fly most advanced fighter jet

Five female pilots have become China’s first women to fly the J-10 combat aircraft, the country’s most advanced fighter jet, a media report said.

J-10, also called the Vigorous Dragon, is a multirole combat aircraft capable of air-to-air combat and ground-attack missions, the China Daily reported Friday.

The five women were among China’s first group of 16 female fighter pilots.

They have completed their first solo flights navigating the J-10 in late July.

The air force first began to recruit female combat pilots in 2005.

India’s star tennis player Sania Mirza, whose career has been plagued by several injuries of late, has now decided to completely shift her focus on playing doubles only.

Shoaib keen to take up Pak bowling coach’s role

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has expressed his desire to become the bowling coach of the national cricket team.

Shoaib on Friday said that he was ready to take up the coaching job if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) asked him to. “Cricket remains my passion and I would love to remain associated with the sport,” said Shoaib.

“Yesterday I was a player, today I can be a coach. I want to give something back to Pakistan cricket. If the board talks to me I will be interested in becoming the national bowling coach,” Shoaib told PTI.

VVS Laxman is likely to retire after NZ Test series

India’s star batsman VVS Laxman is contemplating retirement from international cricket after the two-Test series against New Zealand starting August 23 in Hyderabad.

It is learnt that the veteran of 134 Tests will be addressing the media in a day or two to announce his decision to call time on his illustrious 16-year international career although there has been no official confirmation from the BCCI or the Hyderabad Cricket Association so far.

Legal notice to Ajay Devgn over ‘Son of Sardaar’

A senior lawyer Friday issued a legal notice to actor and producer Ajay Devgn for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of Sikhs in his upcoming flick ‘Son of Sardar’.

As per the notice, lawyer Navkiran Singh decided to issue legal notices to the makers of the movie after watching the official trailer of ‘Son of Sardaar’ on Youtube.

The notice said that the film, in some parts, shows Sikhs in a bad light and hurts religious sentiments.

Together they created magic with their voices and now a year after Jagjit Singh’s death, wife Chitra Singh is paying him a musical tribute by bringing out an album of his unreleased songs this October.

Veteran actor and BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha, who is recovering at home after undergoing a bypass surgery, said that he has been virtually put under house arrest by his actress-daughter Sonakshi Sinha.

Sonakshi, who shot to fame in Bollywood with debut film Dabangg, is making sure her father takes better care of his health after his recent surgery.

“I have been virtually put under house arrest by Sonakshi. She is keeping a strict watch over me…not allowing me to meet guests and taking care of my diet,” said Mr Sinha.

18 shot at in South Africa platinum mine conflict

At least 18 people were shot and feared dead or injured in a conflict at a platinum mine in South Africa, media reports said.

The shooting took place at 4 p.m. as police attempted to disperse armed striking miners at Lonmin’s Marikana mine in the northern province of the North West, the South African Press Association (SAPA) quoted police as saying.

A witness claimed to have seen 18 bodies lying on the ground, reported Xinhua.

Paramedics attended to those hit during the shoot-out between police and armed miners.

Sunny Deol’s “Ghayal Returns” not shelved: Director

Director Rahul Rawail has dismissed reports that Sunny Deol starrer “Ghayal Returns” has hit a roadblock and said he is currently working on the script.

“The sequel will definitely be made. I am working on the script. I can’t talk about the film or any other details related to the project,” director Rahul Rawail told PTI.

Earlier Sunny had roped in Ashwini Chaudhury of “Jodi Breakers” fame to direct “Ghayal Returns”. But due to some disagreements between Sunny and Ashwini, the association did not materialise.

Pakistan army faces militancy problem: Daily

The Pakistan Army appears to have a militancy problem that is “hidden from the public because investigations and court martials are often carried out in secret”, a leading Pakistani paper said Friday, a day after the audacious attack on the key Kamra airbase.

Heavily armed gunmen had stormed the Kamra airbase in Punjab province Thursday morning. An intense gunfight broke out between the militants and security personnel in Attock, a district that is considered to be one of the areas where Pakistan stores its nuclear arsenal. Nine militants and one soldier were killed.

Pakistani panel to probe airbase attack

The Pakistan Air Force has formed a five-member committee to probe the terror attack at Kamra airbase, a media report said Friday.

Pakistan Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafiq Butt, formed the five-member committee to look into the terror strike under the chairmanship of Air Marshal Ather Hussain Bukhari, reported Geo News.

A Pakistan Air Force spokesperson said the other four members of the committee are experts in various fields.
