Promote tolerance, repulse extremism: Zardari

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf have called on the people to reject “extremist trends” and “negative propaganda of misguided elements” and promote the Islamic teaching of tolerance.

Zardari, in his message to the nation on Eid-ul-Fitr, said a society developed on such lines would be helpful in resolving the issues of extremism and violence, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported Monday.

People need to shun hatred, animosity, greed and malice, and instead promote love and affinity, tolerance, generosity and endurance, Zardari said.

U-19 World Cup: India beat Pakistan in a thriller

Indian colts defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by one wicket to enter the semifinals of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup here Monday.

India, chasing a paltry 136, ended at 137 for nine in 48 overs.

Baba Aparajith scored a fighting fifty while southpaw Vijay Zol contributed 36 to the total.

Nikhil Tonk wants Shekhar-Adhyayan for Bhanwari Devi movie

Filmmaker Nikhil Tonk is keen to cast father-son duo – Shekhar Suman and Adhyayan Suman – for his upcoming film, based on Bhanwari Devi murder.

“We have approached Shekhar Suman for the Thakur’s role who rapes Bhanwari and Adhyayan for the guy who is fooled by Bhanwari. I will also be acting in the film,” Tonk told IANS.

He has been associated with the small screen as creative producer of TV shows and this is his first feature film production.

Earlier, reports had suggested that Tonk was keen on casting an A-list actress for the role, but he has finalised TV actress Sara Khan.

Why is Akshay missing from ‘Joker’ promotions?

While Farah Khan can be seen promoting husband Shirish Kunder’s directorial venture “Joker”, lead actor of the movie Akshay Kumar is missing from all the action.

His no-show has thrown up a lot of questions, but Farah clears the air.

“It’s a strategy, please don’t go by what you are reading in the papers, it’s somebody trying to do mischief. It’s a strategy we have adopted,” the 47-year-old said here in an interview.

Farah adds that the recent release of Akshay-Sonakshi Sinha-starrer “Rowdy Rathore” is the primary reason behind Akshay’s no-show.

Well-known designer Rohit Bal, known for his signature peacock and lotus motifs, wishes to dress up Riya Sen whom he describes as “the most beautiful face”.

“Riya has not got her due credit in the film industry. But she has the most beautiful face I have ever seen. She is a typical Bengali beauty. I would love to dress her up,” Bal told IANS at an event here.

However, he considers Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor as the best dressed person in the country.

Delhi celebrates Eid with feasting and fervour

It was a day of prayers, feasting and togetherness Monday as Muslims in the national capital celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramzan.

The traditional greeting of “Eid Mubarak” echoed all around as, dressed in their finest, thousands of Muslims gathered at mosques all over the city. The centrepiece was the historic Jama Masjid in the walled city.

Afghan blast kills three New Zealand soldiers

Three New Zealand soldiers, including a woman medic, were killed in a bomb attack in Afghanistan Sunday.

They died when an IED (improvised explosive device) blast struck their vehicle in Bamyan province, Xinhua reported.

The soldiers were serving with the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.

Six killed in Nepal road accident

At least six people have been killed and 42 others injured in a truck-bus collision on the East-West Highway in Nawalparasi in western Nepal late Sunday.

According to website myrepublica.com, the bus, en-route to Mahendranagar from the capital Kathmandu, collided with a truck with Indian registration plate coming from the opposite direction, Xinhua reported.

The injured are undergoing treatment. However, the deceased have not been identified yet, police said.

Kashmiri separatist leaders placed under house arrest

Authorities Monday placed all senior Kashmiri separatist leaders under house arrest to maintain law and order during the congregational Eid prayers in Srinagar.

“These measures have been taken to ensure that nobody disturbs peace and tranquility in the city on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr,” a police official said.

Those placed under house arrest include Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Shah, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Muhammad Nayeem Khan among others.

Stop witch-hunt: Assange to Obama

Asking the Obama administration to stop “witch-hunt”, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange today made his first public appearance in two months, on the balcony of Ecuador’s London embassy.

Thanking his supporters and especially Ecuador, which has granted him diplomatic asylum despite threats from the UK, Assange asked US President Barack Obama to “to stop witch-hunt against WikiLeaks”.

“I ask President Obama to do the right thing, the United States must renounce its witch-hunt against WikiLeaks,” he said.

Patil appeals to northeast people against leaving Maha

Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil assured foolproof security to the northeastern people in the state and appealed to them not to fall prey to rumours.

“Some rumour-mongers are trying to create panic using social media about impending attacks on northeast natives in the wake of Assam violence. But I appeal to them not to leave for their home states as the state government is committed towards providing security to them and is standing firmly behind them,” Patil said.

Actress Kunika files complaint against MLA’s son

Actress Kunika Lal today filed a police complaint against Siddharth Khosa, son of MLA Baldev Khosa, alleging that he threatened to kill her.

Lal had a minor argument with Baldev when they met at a condolence meeting for Vilasrao Deshmukh last evening, but the matter appeared to have been resolved.

Baldev’s son Siddharth, however, allegedly went to Lal’s Oshiwara residence this morning and threatened to kill her, police said, adding they have registered a non-cognisable offence against Siddharth.
