Five more swine flu cases in Lucknow

Five more cases of swine flue were reported in the Uttar Pradesh capital Thursday, a day after an elderly person died of the virus here.

Samples of five people, brought to Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) with symptoms of the dreaded H1N1 virus, were found positive, doctors said.

T.N. Dhole, head of SGPGI’s microbiology department, confirmed the swine flu cases.

Three of the infected people were SGPGI staffers, two of them technicians. The other two are from the city’s Telibagh area.

Dubai demolishes 40 ugly buildings, more to follow

At least 40 abandoned buildings have been demolished in Dubai this year by the municipality because they posed a health threat, security risk and distortion of the aesthetic view of the emirate.

Currently, there are at least 368 more buildings to be demolished.

Jabir Ahmed Abdullah, head of the building inspection section at the municipality, said some of the buildings were being used for committing different types of crimes, delinquencies and for harbouring infiltrators and fugitives.

Egyptian president to visit China

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi will pay a state visit to China from Aug 28 to 30 at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei Wednesday.

This visit will be Morsi’s first visit to China since taking office. China attaches great importance to the visit, Xinhua quoted Hong as saying.

The spokesperson noted that the Chinese leaders will hold talks and meetings with the Egyptian president to exchange views on bilateral ties, international and regional issues of common concern.

Small plane crash in Russia kills two

Two people were killed in a small plane crash near Russian city of St. Petersburg, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said Wednesday.

The light plane crashed at 3.21 p.m. The two victims onboard the Cessna-421 light plane were identified as residents of the St. Petersburg city and the Krasnodar region, Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying in a statement.

The plane, belonging to a small airline Intertransavia, crashed into the ground near a children’s day-care facility shortly after takeoff, the ministry cited local police as saying.

Govt making efforts to discuss CAG report on coal with Opposition

Attacking BJP for disrupting Parliament proceedings, Government today said it was making all efforts to persuade the main opposition party to discuss the CAG report on coal block allocation.

“We are making all efforts to persuade opposition to come for discussion,” Law Minister Salman Khurshid told reporters after Parliament was paralysed for the second day running with the BJP pressing for resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the issue.

A government bank official has been asked by a Delhi court to pay Rs 10,000 a month to his estranged wife and daughter to take care of themselves.

The mahila court ordered the bank official to pay maintenance to his wife, observing that “it is a settled law that an able bodied man is legally and morally bound to maintain his wife and children.”

Govt working with social media to prevent misuse of

Admitting to difficulties in identifying people using websites to spread communal hatred, government today said it was working with social networking sites to create an institutional mechanism to prevent misuse of technology.

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said some social networking websites have agreed to share user information with the government but there were some procedural issues involved.

IITian from Andhra Pradesh committed suicide in Chennai

(Siasat News)Barely two weeks after she joined college, Manasa Merugu (21), a first-year M.Tech student of IIT Madras, from Andhra Pradesh committed suicide in her hostel room on campus on Tuesday afternoon.

Chennai police said that family problems led her to take the extreme step and she had already married to Srinivasa Minisala, who is a software Engineer in Hyderabad without her parent knowledge. When informed this to her uncle, he got shocked. Police said that this information is also given to her husband who is on the way to Chennai.

Militants explode two powerful grenades in Imphal

Militants exploded two powerful bombs near the office of an NGO in Imphal East district of Manipur but no casualty was reported, officials said today.

The bombs exploded at around 10.30 PM last night at Napet Palli area under Heingang police station, about 15 kms from here but no one was injured, they said.

A militant group had demanded extortion of Rs 10 lakh from the NGO, Educated Farmers Association (EFA).

Call for Congressional hearing on hate crime

In the aftermath of the shooting inside a Gurdwara in Wisconsin, a group of more than 150 organisations have called for a Congressional hearing on hate crimes.

Six Sikh worshipers, including four Indian nationals, died when an ex-army man went on a shooting spree inside the Gurdwara in Oak Creek city in Wisconsin on August 5.

While the police is yet to determine the reason for the shooting, Sikh advocacy groups have termed it a hate crime.

Voicing its support for full freedom of the internet, US has urged India to maintain respect for fundamental freedoms, while probing rumours that have caused an exodus of northeastern Indians from southern cities.

The US “have seen these reports that northeastern Indians are returning to the northeast from cities in southern India, and these media reports that the returns are due to concerns about personal safety”, State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters Tuesday when asked about India blocking some websites for allegedly orchestrating a campaign of hatred.

Colombian caught trying to board plane with grenade

A man was arrested when a grenade was found in his carry-on luggage as he tried to board a commercial flight in the southwestern Colombian city of Guapi, authorities said.

Authorities have yet to determine whether the suspect is part of an armed group, where he obtained the grenade or what he intended to do with it, sources told EFE.

The man was trying to board a flight to Cali, Colombia’s third-largest city, Caracol Television said.

AFC extends suspension against former president

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has extended its suspension of Mohamed Bin Hammam, amid investigation into possible corruption indulged in by its former president.

The governing body of Asian football Sunday said in a statement that the chairman of the AFC Disciplinary Committee, Lim Kia Tong Aug 15 extended the provisional suspension of Bin Hammam by 20 days, reports Xinhua.

Bin Hammam was banned from taking part in any kind of football activities for 30 days last month, after an outside audit found that he was involved in possible corruption during his tenure as AFC president.

Train bombing attempt foiled in Pakistan

Hundreds of lives were saved when an attempt to blow up a passenger train in Pakistan was foiled after the train engineer spotted some suspicious material on the rail track, news reports said Monday.

The Jaffer Express was stopped Sunday near Kolpur railway station in Bolan district of Balochistan, Geo News reported.

The train, on its way to Rawalpindi from Quetta, was about to reach Kolpur, when the engineer spotted the suspicious material.
