Haj Pilgrims of green category can change their category now

(Siasat News)Central Hajj Committee has provided the facility of changing the category from green to any other.

Requests for change of category should reach the Central Hajj Committee before 25th August. Request for change could be made through fax or e-mail.

Due to increase in accommodation charges to the extent of Rs.42, 000, Central Hajj Committee has acquired accommodation for the green category only for 60 thousand pilgrims this year.

Now, a robot that will understand emotions

A robot being developed in Finland will be capable of recognising human emotions and understanding speech and gestures.

Being created at the University of Oulu in Finland, the technology could prove beneficial in nursing homes and in the fields of security and logistics, reported goodnewsfinland.com.

Research groups working on the project, led by Matti Pietikäinen and Juha Roning, have developed the new technology in speech animation, navigation and what is described as machine vision.

Brazil importing Spanish defence technology

Brazil has begun to import Spanish defence training technology, a media report said Thursday.

Simulators from Tecnobit, S.L., will be installed in Brazil at two training centres that will be built at a cost of 13 million reais ($6.5 million), the daily Folha de Sao Paulo reported.

Tecnobit won an open bidding contest in 2010 by the Brazilian defence ministry and 13 top military officers traveled to Madrid to learn about the technology.

Meghalaya ministers to review situation in Karnataka, Maharashtra

Three Meghalaya ministers Friday left for Karnataka and Maharashtra to review the situation in the states after thousands of people from the northeast left following threats that they would be attacked.

Thousands of students from Meghalaya and other northeastern states have left Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Maharashtra after mobile text messages warned them of attacks as a backlash for the Assam ethnic violence.

Brazil revives bullet-train project

Brazil has announced the revival of a $16.5 billion high-speed railway project that would link Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

The National Agency of Terrestrial Transport, or ANTT, published the details of the process for awarding the contract Thursday. The process will include a public consultation phase, giving people until Sep 24 to make their “suggestions”.

Interested companies will have until April 30, 2013, to submit their bids, which will be opened a month later.

The bidding process will be divided into two phases.

Mumbai police chief shifted days after Azad Maidan violence

Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik was transferred today amid mounting opposition clamour for his ouster over his alleged failure to prevent August 11 Azad Maidan violence, though the government termed it as a routine exercise.

Patnaik, a 1979 batch officer of the Indian Police Service, has been replaced by Additional Director General (Law and Order) Satyapal Singh of 1980 batch.

Israel slams South Africa over Palestinian territory label

Israel has condemned the South African government’s decision to label goods produced in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Under the new rules, the South African government has announced that goods of Jewish settlements in the West Bank can no longer be sold in the country under the label “Made in Israel”.

Israeli Foreign Ministry has summoned the South African ambassador for clarification in this regard.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry called the measure as discrimination based on national and political criteria provoking a boycott of Israeli products.

NASA to explore earth’s radiation belts

NASA will launch two probes early Friday to study the enigmatic radiation belts around the earth that could be hazardous for spacecraft and astronauts.

An Atlas V carrier rocket with twin Radiation Belt Storm Probes(RBSP) is scheduled to lift off at 8.07 a.m. GMT from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The $686-million RBSP mission will help scientists to get an insight into the physical dynamics of the Van Allen Belts – conglomerations of highly energised particles extending up to 40,000 km around the earth.

Train traffic disrupted due to Bomb threats in Kerala

(Siasat News)Train traffic was temporarily halted between Kottayam and Ernakulam after a bomb spotted near bridge over Muvattupuza River. Stationmaster was immediately alerted about the bomb.

Bomb Disposal Squad was pressed into service to dispose it. Preliminary examination resulted that the bomb was inactive but officials conducted more tests after evacuating public.

India beat New Zealand to enter final of U-19 World Cup

India defeated New Zealand by nine runs in the semifinals of the U-19 ICC World Cup here Thursday to set up a title clash with hosts Australia.

New Zealand, chasing a target of 210, made 200 for nine in 50 overs after Cam Fletcher top scored with 53.

Parliament again disrupted over coal scam

Both houses of parliament were adjourned till 12 noon Thursday as the opposition demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the Comptroller and Auditor General’s report on the allocation of coal blocks.

As soon as the Lok Sabha met at 11 a.m., BJP members refused to allow the proceedings and rushed towards Speaker Meira Kumar’s podium raising slogans. The house was adjourned till 12 noon.

Similar scenes were seen in the Rajya Sabha, forcing Chairperson Hamid Ansari to adjourn the house till 12 noon.

Three policemen shot dead in Pakistan

At least three policemen were killed and several others injured when unidentified gunmen opened fired at a police vehicle in Pakistan’s northwestern town of Hangu Thursday, Xinhua reported, citing Urdu TV channel Dunya.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is investigating how the ground crew did not saw her when the plane stopped for two hours at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.

However she did not complaint to cabin crew instead came back, but the immigration officials stopped her on arrival back in Lahore on Wednesday morning.

IITian suicide case take a new turn when College Management said she went home but parent denies

(Siasat News)S. Merugu Manasa’s father arrived IIT Madras on Wednesday, to collect the dead body of his daughter who was an IITian from Karimnagar. She committed suicide on Tuesday.

The girl’s father said that the staff of IIT did not cooperate with him, even they didn’t let him to see her daughter’s hostel room.

“The IIT is known as a very prestigious institution in Karimnagar. So we sent her here but now they have handed me only her lifeless body. My daughter was a very intelligent and bold girl and I can’t imagine that she could this extreme step,” said her father.

US hit by worst outbreak of deadly West Nile virus

The United States has been hit hard by the largest ever outbreak of West Nile virus, spread mostly by mosquito bites, that has killed 47 people and infected an estimated 95,000 in 38 states.

The number of cases so far this year is the highest recorded through August since the disease was first detected in the United States in 1999, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Assam legislator arrested for role in ethnic violence

An Assam legislator was arrested Thursday for his role in the ethnic violence in the state, police said.

Pradip Brahma is an MLA from the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF).

Brahma was held after seven cases were registered against him in Fakiragram and Dotama police stations in Kokrajhar district, Inspector General of Police L.R. Bishnoi told IANS.

BPF, led by its chief Hagrama Mihilary, is in power in the Bodoland Territorial Council that runs the four Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts. The party is also a partner in the state’s Congress-led government.
