UP cops accidentally kill youth

A chase for two chain snatchers by the police in Rae Bareli turned awry Friday night when a youth was shot dead in a shootout, police said Saturday.

The incident happened when a team of Special Operations Group (SOG) was pursuing two chain snatchers in Lodhipur Uttrawan village. Rae Bareli is 77 km from here.

When the duo abandoned their vehicle on a roadside and escaped in the fields, the police opened fire in which a 22-year-old youth, Dharmendra, was killed.

Obama names Bombay IIT graduate to key post

President Barack Obama has appointed Romesh Wadhwani, an Indian American founder of several software and IT companies, on board of trustees of the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts.

Announcing his intent to appoint Wadhwani and nine other general trustees of the centre, Obama said, “These dedicated men and women bring a wealth of experience and talent to their new roles and I am proud to have them serve in this Administration.”

Lokpal bill delayed, select committee to give report in winter session

Bringing further delay to the passage of the anti-graft Lokpal bill, the term of the select committee of Rajya Sabha, which is looking into the bill was given an extension Friday. The committee will now submit its report in the winter session.

The select committee was formed in May this year, during the budget session, to look into the bill after the opposition raised objections over the format of this legislation as passed by the Lok Sabha.

India committed to curb leprosy, stigma: WHO ambassador

India is committed to curbing leprosy cases in the coming years and eliminating the stigma associated with the disease, World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Goodwill ambassador for leprosy Yohei Sasakawa said here Friday.

Sasakawa, on a seven-day visit to India, met senior officials from the ministry of health and family welfare to discuss the country’s projects on leprosy.

“I Am Kalam” director Nila Madhab Panda, whose second film “Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid” has released Friday withou too much of publicity, says splurging money on promotion does not promise success. He feels a good story line is a must for a film to do well.

“If a film has a good story line, it is well made and sends across a message then it will work for sure. If it is not, then even if you spend crores (of rupees) on its promotion it won’t be successful. Maybe for a day or two you will be able to fool audience but not in the long run. They are also very smart now,” Panda told IANS.

Standing Committee of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation rejected the proposal of buying garbage vehicles saying that instead of buying the new garbage vehicles of less capacity, it is better to use new technology for sweeping the city roads.

Standing Committee is of the opinion that instead of extracting works from the sweepers, it is better to deploy automatic machines for sweeping the roads. The employees’ Union opines that it will lead to unemployment of the laborers.

Sunita Williams takes fifth spacewalk

Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams, who holds the record of the longest space flight (195 days) for a woman, has completed her fifth spacewalk lasting a near record eight hours and 17 minutes.

Williams and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide set out from the international space station at 5:46 p.m. Thursday (India time) and returned at 2:03 a.m. Friday, the US space agency NASA announced.

The longest spacewalk of 8 hours and 56 minutes was undertaken by US astronauts Susan Helms and James Voss in 2001.

DRDO staffer arrested for terror link

(Siasat News)DRDO employee and a journalist among 11 men arrested by Karnataka Police for alleged links with global terror outfits.

During investigation they told the group had plans to assassinate MPs and MLAs from the state, a businessman and two journalists from Bangalore.

Police said all had links with international terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba and Harkat-ul-Jihadal-Islami.

One of the arrests is Ejaz Mohammed Mirza who works for Airborne Early Warning and Control System, a DRDO division

Woman killed as lightning strikes UP village

A woman was killed and 12 injured when lightning struck in Mirzapur district late Thursday, police said.

The incident happened at Veerpur village in Mirzapur district, about 290 km from here, when lightning struck during a torrential downpour, instantly killing 40-year-old Bhanwari Devi.

Over a dozen people, including two teenagers, were also severely burnt.

District officials transported the injured to nearby medical facilities.

Lightning also struck villagers in Kotar and Bhawari villages.

Chief Minister has given the go-ahead to the Web-based counseling.

Iran doubles capacity at nuclear site : Report

Iran has doubled its capacity in an underground uranium enrichment facility, according to a new International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report.

According to this report, the number of centrifuges at the Fordow facility, about 130 km from Tehran, had more than doubled to around 2,000 from around 1,000 in May, said Xinhua citing local media Thursday.

It also showed that Iran had produced nearly 190 kg of higher-grade enriched uranium since 2010, up from 145 kg in May.

Dhoni warns teammates against taking NZ pacers lightly

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Thursday cautioned his teammates from taking New Zealand lightly and said the visiting team’s pacers would look to exploit the overcast conditions during the second Test match, starting on Friday.

“New Zealand is a good bowling side and will come up with good bowling plan by exploiting the overcast conditions at Chinnaswamy stadium. The first spell will be really crucial for both sides,” Dhoni said.

The United States on Thursday slapped sanctions on Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e- Toiba’s top eight commanders, including Mumbai terrorist attack mastermind Sajid Mir and its founder Hafiz Saeed’s son.

Announcing the sanctions, the US said LeT, despite being designated as a foreign terrorist organisation in January 2002, continues to “operate in Pakistan” and throughout the region and engage in terrorist activities worldwide.
