New Hajj House Foundation in 10 days-Minister

A.P. Wakf Board has earmarked the land for new State Hajj House. The foundation stone laying ceremony will be held within 10 days. The construction work of the new Hajj house would be taken up on war footings. Keeping in view the convenience of the Hajj pilgrims, the office of the State Hajj Committee will be retained in the old Hajj house only.

Mr. Syed Mohammed Ahmedullah, Minister of Minorities Welfare disclosed it in a press conference after the meeting of the Hajj Coordination Committee held here two days back.

Dr. Javeed Kamal retired

Noted Urdu playwright and Director Dr. Mirza Mustafa Ali Baig, popularly known in academic circles by his pen name Javeed Kamal retired from Govt. service as lecturer in Urdu, from Govt. Girls’ Degree College, Husaini Alam.

He has started his career as junior lecturer in Urdu at Maulana Azad Girls’ Junior College, Nampally, Hyderabad, where he served as in charge Principal also.

He is associated with many Urdu literary and cultural associations of Hyderabd. He presented very successful Urdu cultural programmes.

Photos of suspects in Odisha violence released

Odisha Police have released photographs of 36 suspects involved in violence during Sep 6 Congress rally here in which a policewoman was thrashed and molested in the state capital, an official said Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Nitinjit Singh said the pictures were extracted from 12-hour footage from closed-circuit television cameras. The footages are being examined to identify people involved in vandalism. The photographs are being circulated to nab the offenders.

“We are still examining the footage. We may release photographs of some more people soon,” Singh told IANS.

Information panels should be manned by judicial people: SC

The Supreme Court Thursday held that the Central Information Commission and state information commissions are forums performing quasi-judicial functions and thus these should be manned by people with judicial background.

The court said that one of the two members hearing a plea challenging the denial of information has to be from judicial background.

Indian bank opens branch in South Africa

State-owned Bank of India (BoI) has opened its first branch here in a move to enhance the relationship between South Africa and India while contributing to the overall development of the BRICS grouping.

BoI Managing Director Shri Alok K. Misra said increasing business interaction and trade between the two emerging economic power houses means that banking demand of doing business is rising, Xinhua reported.

“BoI believes that the growing trade between India and South Africa has the capacity to accept another bank from India,” Misra said.

Karachi factory had several emergency exits, all locked

The factory in this Pakistani port city where as many as 289 people were killed in a major fire had several emergency exits, but all of them were locked, said an official.

The blaze started Tuesday from the basement and gutted three other floors of the building, said the official.

He said the building had several emergency exits but all of them were locked permanently, reported Dawn.

The Karachi blaze was one of the worst infernos the country has ever seen. It broke out a few hours after another fire at a factory in Lahore left 25 people dead.

Bodies were iron hot, say Karachi rescuers

“The bodies were iron hot,” said a rescuer who himself got burnt while carrying the victims of a factory fire that left at least 289 people dead.

Ameen Memon, a rescuer, said that most of the rescue team members burnt their hands while trying to carry the smouldering bodies from the garments factory in Baldia Town.

Outrage in Pakistan over factory fire deaths

Describing industrial buildings as “death traps” and “concentration camps”, Pakistani dailies Thursday sought regular inspections of factories as well as rigorous application of the law following the deaths of over 300 workers at two factories in the country.

Karachi woman hunts for trapped husband, finds his mobile

A woman desperately looking for her husband found his mobile phone next to a charred body at a mortuary here – but she was still not sure whether he was amongst the 289 who died in the devastating fire that gutted a Karachi factory.

Waheeda had refused to leave the mortuary at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) here as she kept looking through the pile of bodies for her husband, Shafi Mohammad, reported Geo News.

She later recognised her husband from the mobile phone found beside his body.

“I still don’t know whether it’s him,” she wailed to a rescue worker.

Witnesses said that Julio Saquil, 40, entered the school without saying a word and attacked two students with a machete.

Authorities identified the slain students as Evelyn Yanisa Saquij Bin, 8, and Juan Armando Coy Cal, 13.

Former lawmaker’s body found in Mexico

The body of a former state legislator was found in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon four days after he was kidnapped by gunmen, authorities said Wednesday.

Hernan Belden Elizondo’s body was discovered Tuesday at La Huasteca park in the city of Santa Catarina, the Nuevo Leon Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

The 45-year-old Belden Elizondo was a member of the conservative National Action Party, or PAN.

Belden Elizondo was kidnapped last Friday, but “no money was ever demanded” for his release, the AG’s office said, adding that he was killed the same day.

Twin fires in factories claim 314 lives in Pakistan

A pair of devastating fires engulfed a garment factory in Karachi and a shoe unit in Lahore killing at least 314 people, including women and children, in one of the worst industrial accidents in Pakistan.

The fire in the multi-storey garment factory in Baldia Town area of Karachi broke out at 6 pm local time yesterday, hours after 25 people were killed in a blaze in a shoe factory in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, officials said on Wednesday.
