Sunita Williams finishes triathlon in space

Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams set yet another record as she completed a triathlon in space by running, biking and “swimming” along with athletes during the Nautica Malibu Triathlon held in Southern California over the weekend.

“A big shout out to our astronaut strength and conditioning folks, who were really interested in this and who got this whole workout together,” Ms Williams said, thanking the NASA Exercise Lab staff and neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s medical correspondent who trained with Williams before her launch and completed the race in Malibu.

Pakistani PM appears in Supreme Court

Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf Tuesday appeared before the Supreme Court, which had last month given him three-weeks’ time to write to Swiss authorities on reopening corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Raja Pervez Ashraf arrived at the the Supreme Court premises Tuesday to attend the hearing on the NRO verdict implementation case, DawnNews reported.

The prime minister was expected to apprise the court over the issue of writing the letter to Swiss authorities.

US court stays case against Google digital library plan

A US appeals court has granted a stay on a case filed by the Authors Guild against Google until it decides on a trial court judge’s May 31 ruling granting it class action status.

The stay by a 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals judge in New York came after the Authors Guild, which sued Google seven years ago over the company’s plans to create the world’s largest digital books library, consented to the suspension.

SC grants bail to Nupur but has to be in jail for 7 more days

Dentist Nupur Talwar, who has been in jail for over four months in the twin murder case of her daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj, was today granted bail by the Supreme Court which directed her to be released by September 25.

In view of ongoing trial in which the CBI is examining the witnesses, a bench of justices A K Patnaik and J S Khehar said that Nupur be released next week and directed the investigating agency to complete examining its witnesses by Septmeber 25.

Giant panda gives birth at Washington zoo

There’s a new arrival at the national zoo here late Sunday, the zoo’s only female giant panda, Mei Xiang, gave birth to a baby cub.

“We are thrilled that Mei Xiang had a successful pregnancy,” said Dennis Kelly, director at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.

The zoo’s staff is calling the birth a real victory for the giant panda population as a whole. Giant pandas are endangered, there are about 1,600 left in the wild, and they typically make their home in the mountain ranges of central China.

Obama plays China card against Romney

With just 50 days to go for what is expected to be a close presidential race, President Barack Obama played the China card against his Republican challenger Mitt Romney with another outsourcing jab.

Antony ends Maldives visit after talks on more defence coop

India and Maldives agreed to augment cooperation in defence and security to deal with common security threats as Defence Minister AK Antony held talks with the Maldivian leadership and also discussed the latest political situation in the nascent democracy.

Wrapping up his three-day visit, during which India announced a slew of measures to boost defence capabilities of this Indian ocean archipelago, Antony said today that there was further scope for improvement in bilateral ties.

Sachin’s photo gets 39,262 likes

Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar’s photo on his facebook page got 39,262 likes after he uploaded it Monday.

The photo had Sachin standing at the edge of a railing at the Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad with the caption reading, “Enjoying the view at Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad.”

With in six hours of uploading the photo it got 39,262 likes and was shared by 1942 people. The photo also received 2,378 comments.

China seeks closer ties with Sri Lanka

China has sought a comprehensive partnership with Sri Lanka that includes strengthening trade and investment ties, a top Chinese official said here.

Visiting Chairman of the National People’s Congress’ standing committee Wu Bangguo and Sri Lankan parliamentary speaker Chamal Rajapaksa discussed the subject here Monday.

Both countries should strengthen their strategic coordination so as to enhance mutual understanding and trust, Xinhua quoted Wu as saying.

He said China is willing to expand imports from Sri Lanka to promote trade balance and facilitate bilateral cooperation.

Indian commandos to protect merchant vessels against piracy

Concerned over rising instances of piracy off the Somali coast in the Gulf of Aden, India is readying an initial 100-man team to protect its merchant vessels in the area. This is the first time armed personnel will be deployed aboard cargo ships.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will take on the responsibility of securing the merchant vessels, under a proposal mooted by the ministry of shipping and, as a pilot project, will train 100 of its personnel for the purpose, a government source told IANS.

14 killed in Pakistan bombing

At least 14 people were killed Sunday when a passenger van was hit by a roadside bomb in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region, media reports said.

The blast took place around 7.30 a.m. when the van, carrying an estimated 15 people, was passing through Bunarh area of Lower Dir district, along the border with Afghanistan, Xinhua reported citing local media.

Police said the van was destroyed in the blast.

Geo News said the bomb was detonated by remote control.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Newly-appointed Japanese envoy to China dies

Japan’s newly-appointed ambassador to China died Sunday after he fell unconscious on a street in Tokyo three days ago, Xinhua reported.

Shinichi Nishimiya, 60, died at a hospital in Tokyo, according to Kyodo news agency.

Nishimiya fell unconscious on a street Thursday. Police said it was caused by illness.

Kyodo, however, said the cause of his death was yet to be known.

Nishimiya’s appointment had just been approved by the Japanese government Tuesday. He was to replace current Japanese ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa.

Prince William vows to protect wife from paparazzi

Prince William has vowed that his wife, Duchess Catherine, will not suffer the same press intrusion as his late mother Princess Diana did.

William believes that paparazzi contributed to his mother’s death in a car crash in Paris in 1997, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

The Duke of Cambridge was left furious after pictures of his spouse sunbathing topless while holidaying in a private chateau in France were published in French magazine Closer. He now wants to do all he can to protect his wife’s privacy.

TDP opposes FDI in retail business

Large Quantity of explosive material seized from Banjara Hills

Police seized a large quantity of explosive material from Banjara Hills. The North zone police team arrested one, B. Krishna. Police was watching his movements for a longer time.

Police seized 440 gelatin sticks and 200 detonators from his procession. Police is searching one Ms. Balamani who is allegedly said to be involved in the illegal transportation of these materials in collaboration with her husband Yadaiah. He is in jail for such activities. During investigation, police found out the role of Ms. Balamani in this case and hence it is searching for her fervently.

Supplementary Charge sheet in Emaar case

Deputy Legal Advisor of C.B.I., Mr. B.Ravindernath told that in the supplementary charge sheet submitted by C.B.I., criminal transactions have been highlighted in Emaar properties case. In addition to it, the names of witnesses and other documents have also been produced. C.B.I. is investigating the irregularities committed in the transfers of bungalows and apartments. So far, senior I.A.S. officer, Mr. B.P. Acharaya has been charge sheeted. In addition to him, there are 11 more accused persons in this case. At present, Mr. Acharya is Central Jail in Chanchalguda.

State President of Students’ Islamic Organization of India has demanded the Govt. of India to remove the controversial film on prophet Mohammed (SAWS) from the You Tube.

If we connect the past incidents, it will be revealed that by inciting the Muslims, some forces want to prove that the Muslim leadership thought the world is inefficient. It is one such an attempt.

Hindu Organizations protest against GHMC’s action

Municipal officials dismantled the basement of Banjarang Dal flag, which was erected on the crossroads of Shaikpet. This was done in connection with the road widening work for Bio-diversity conference. Municipal authorities promised that they would construct this basement at some other palace. Since the Municipal authorities had dismantled the basement of Bajrang Dal flag without their permission, they got irritated.

Taking advantage of this situation, the activists of Bajrang Dal seized the Traffic Island constructed by the Municipal Corporation workers and started performing pooja.

Davis Cup: Australia take 2-1 lead over Germany
