Seema Andhra leaders meet to oppose Telangana

A meeting of the Seema Andhra leaders was held yesterday in Ministers’ Quarters Club. Six ministers, 25 MLA’s and 8 M.L.C’s attended the meeting. These leaders decided to keep A.P. State united. They also resolved to visit New Delhi to meet the leaders of Congress High Command.

Myanmar’s pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi has described Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru among her “greatest sources” of influence, as she encouraged American students to read the works of India’s Father of the Nation.

Suu Kyi, said Gandhi, civil rights activist Martin Luther King and her father and “political mentor” Aung San were all men of principles and she read works by them to keep herself disciplined when she was placed under house arrest by her country’s military dictators.

Pak police files case against 6,000 people for film protests

Pakistani police have registered a case against over 6,000 unidentified people on charges of terrorism, ransacking and attempted murder during a protest against an anti-Islam film in Lahore, officials said on Sunday.

“We have arrested 36 people so far and we will use footage from TV news channels and CCTV cameras to identify the other culprits,” Lahore Police spokesman Niyab Haider said.

The 36 people arrested on charges of inciting violence during Friday’s protest against the anti-Islam film, were remanded to judicial custody for a fortnight on Saturday by an anti-terrorism court.

Ranbir, Anurag hope ‘Barfi!’ gets Oscar nomination

Actor Ranbir Kapoor and ‘Barfi!’ director Anurag Basu are happy that the film is India’s official entry for the Oscars 2013, but said they have a long way to go to actually gain a nomination.

The film beat 19 other films to be named India’s entry in the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ category at the Oscars in February next year.

“We all are very happy… It is a team effort but we should not be that excited as the film has just got an entry from India, we are yet to be selected for the main entry,” said Ranbir, who has played the role of a deaf and mute boy in the film.

Veteran actor Om Puri admitted to hospital due to illness

Veteran actor Om Puri is suffering from typhoid and has been admitted to a private hospital here.

Puri, 61, who was shooting for a film “Ram Bhajan Zindabad” in Rahramau village in neighbouring Barabanki district, fell ill and was admitted to a city hospital yesterday, his co-actor Sharad Raj.

“Puri was admitted to the hospital with fever. The doctors said that he has typhoid,” Raj said, adding that his condition is improving.

Flash floods and landslides kill 21 in Sikkim

At least twenty one bodies, including those of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) personnel, have so far been found while eight persons are still missing due to flash flood and landslides in remote areas of North Sikkim, official sources said today.

The dead include four from the ITBP, two of their family members, and 12 junior officers from the BRO. Other victims were casual labourers, officials said.

Most of the casualties are reported from Rangma range.

While remaining unknown in their own country, some Indian soldiers will become household names in Haifa in northern Israel after figuring in the history textbooks taught at schools for their contribution in liberating this city in 1918.

The municipality of Haifa has gone ahead with its decision to immortalise the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers, many of whom are buried in the cemetery here, by including the stories of their valiant efforts in liberating the coastal city during the First World War in the school curricula as part of the history textbooks.

Egyptian Mufti calls for peace over anti-Islam movie

A leading figure of the Sunni sect of Islam in Egypt has called on Muslims to maintain “peace” and show “patience and wisdom” while reacting over anti-Islam actions across the world.

Speaking to CNN amid continuing protests across the Muslim world against the anti-Islam private US film which mocks the Prophet Muhammad and a French satirical magazine’s cartoons, Egypt’s Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa made the appeal.

11 shot dead in Karachi

As many as 11 people, including a former member of the provincial assembly, have been gunned down in different parts of Pakistan’s port city of Karachi, Geo News reported Sunday.

Sixty-year-old Malik Ata, a former member of the provincial assembly, was shot dead Saturday in the city’s Mehmoodabad area, Geo News reported.

The leader was sitting outside his house when two armed men, riding a motorcycle, arrived and sprayed him with bullets. He died at the hospital.

Police said Malik’s murder seemed to be sectarian in nature.

Lucknow school is world’s ‘largest’

Starting from five students and a Rs.300 loan, a Lucknow school has travelled a long way to become the school with the most number of pupils in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records.

The 57th and 2013 edition of the book says the City Montessori School (CMS) in Lucknow had a record enrolment of 39,437 pupils on Aug 9, 2010, for the 2010-11 academic year.

School authorities told IANS that the number of pupils now stood at 45,000-plus.

The entry in the Guinness, which documents the world’s most unique and selective records, has enthused the students and staff.

PM meets Prez amid speculation on Cabinet reshuffle

Amid intense speculation of a cabinet reshuffle, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today met President Pranab Mukherjee during which the two discussed the political situation in the country.

The meeting lasted for 45 minutes during which the two leaders discussed the “current political situation”, Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson Venu Rajamony said here.

The meeting comes a day after the 19-member Trinamool Congress gave a letter to the President announcing withdrawal of support to the Congress-led UPA government.

A sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise and poor eating habits are making millions of urban Indians face a high risk of heart disease, a study by a Mumbai-based consumer products major has revealed.

Urban India is moving to lifestyle diseases from infectious diseases due to a sedentary life, poor healthy food and lack of physical activity, Apollo Hospitals cardiologist Girish B. Navasundi told IANS, citing the Marico Ltd study conducted online in 12 cities across the country during the last two fiscal years (2010-12).

Syrian parliamentary delegation to visit Iran

A Syrian parliamentary delegation will visit Tehran for diplomatic talks, Iran’s Press TV reported.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of the Iranian parliament Majlis’ National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said the Syrian delegation was scheduled to arrive in Tehran Sunday.

He said the 10-member Syrian group will meet Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani and a number of other Iranian officials.

Boroujerdi had said in August that his country stands against any foreign intervention in Syria.

Russians protest against price hikes

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Moscow to protest against the rising cost of utilities.

Demonstrators, most of them supporters of the Communist Party and activists of leftist groups, Saturday demanded that charges for water, heat and electricity be frozen.

The utility charges have been increasing steadily over the past decade.

The rally, near Red Square and the Kremlin, comes just a week after a mass protest against President Vladimir Putin, which also called for the rates to be lowered.

Similar demonstrations were held in other cities across the country.

We have high hopes from ‘Barfi’: Ranbir Kapoor

Bollywood film “Barfi” has got an official entry to the Oscars, and actor Ranbir Kapoor said he has high hopes from the film even though at the moment it has not reached the nomination stage.

“We are not nominated yet. Once we do, the feeling will come. We have a lot of faith and hope from the film,” Ranbir told IANS.

The Film Federation of India (FFI) shortlisted some critically acclaimed films, including “Paan Singh Tomar” and “Kahaani”, but “Barfi” was selected to represent India in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Somali MP shot dead

Unidentified gunmen have shot dead a member of the new Somali parliament, Xinhua reported

According to the state radio, Mustaf Haji Mohamed was murdered as he left a mosque in Mogadishu’s Waberi district Saturday.

The assassinated MP was newly elected to the 275-member parliament.

The killers escaped after the attack, for which no one has claimed responsibility.

However, Al Qaeda-linked outfit Al-Shabaab has vowed to target members of the new legislature.

Rahul Gandhi to visit Jharkhand

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi will interact with Panchayat members and party leaders during a two day trip to Jharkhand Sep 25-26, party sources said Saturday.

Gandhi is expected to be briefed on the devolution of powers to the Panchayats. The panchayat polls were held in the state two years ago after a gap of over 30 years.

He will meet former and sitting legislators of the Congress besides MPs from Jharkhand in order to galvanise the party in the state.

Kashmir may also give more cylinders

Jammu and Kashmir should also given nine subsidised cooking gas cylinders in a year to consumers, a minister said Saturday.

The state cabinet has to take a decision in this regard, Consumers Affairs and Public Distribution Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon told IANS.

The central government announced last week that a family can get only six subsidised gas cylinders in a year. The Congress said this number would go up to nine in all Congress-ruled states.

“I feel that even Jammu and Kashmir should give three extra cooking gas cylinders to consumers,” Akhoon said.

Brazilian model-turned-actress Nathalia Kaur is sick of rumours. She has clarified that she is neither tying the knot with anyone, nor is she a part of “Jism 3”.

“I am not doing ‘Jism 3’ and I am not getting married. So I want to clear it I am not doing that film,” Nathalia told reporters here.

The actress started her career in Bollywood with a special appearance in Ram Gopal Varma’s “Department” earlier this year.

Nathalia says she has signed two Bollywood projects as of now, but she is more keen on southern projects.
