A woman in the UAE, who found her husband had a sexually transmitted disease and refused to have sex with him, sought divorce when she caught the man watching pornographic movies on his computer.

The woman, a doctor by profession, opened the laptop computer and browsed through it, before she realised several movies and pictures of a sexual nature were saved in different folders, the Gulf News daily reported.

The woman had found out that her husband had syphilis, and asked him not to have sex with her.

She asked him to go for medical treatment before they could sleep together.

3 cops held for beating woman to death in Kashmir

Four people, including three policemen, were arrested in Kashmir’s Anantnag district Sunday for allegedly beating a woman to death during a police search for contraband drugs, a police official said.

“Three policemen and the son-in-law of the woman have been arrested. Further probe will be done after the autopsy report,” the police official said.

People in Ahlaan Gadool village in the Kokarnag area of Anantnag Friday staged a protest demonstration after the death of 65-year-old Mukhti.

Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez conceded that the team could not live up to the expectations of its fans at the World Twenty20 but insisted that the side gave its best before being ousted in the semifinals.

Hafeez on Saturday returned to Lahore along with some other players and coach Dav Whatmore.

“We all knew that our people were following the World Twenty20 very closely and wanted us to do well and play in the final. Unfortunately we couldn`t do that and Sri Lanka was the better team in the semifinal,” he said.

Chetia likely to be handed over to India by December-end

Top ULFA leader Anup Chetia, currently lodged in a jail in Bangladesh, is likely to be handed over to India by the end of this year.

This indication was given by Dhaka saying the procedure to repatriate Chetia was underway, a senior government official told PTI.

The issue has been flagged to Dhaka and will be discussed at the three-day India-Bangladesh Home Secretary-level talks beginning in Dhaka on October 14.

Two planes collide at Madrid airport

Two planes – with 297 and 384 passengers on board – collided while on the ground at Madrid’s Barajas airport, but there were no casualties, a media report said.

The incident occurred Saturday between an Air Europe flight – with 297 passengers – bound for Venezuelan capital Caracas, and an aircraft from the Iberworld airline – with 384 passengers – travelling to Mexico’s Cancun city, Xinhua reported.

Sources told Xinhua the incident took place when the Air Europe plane was being pushed back from its station, and its tail collided with the wing of the Iberworld aircraft.

Israeli jets shoot down unidentified drone

The Israel Air Force intercepted and shot down a drone that had penetrated the country’s airspace, the military said.

A military spokesman told Xinhua that two fighter jets were sent from a southern air base, after a ground control station identified the drone.

The drone was shot down over the Yatir forest in the Negev region.

Military spokesman Capt. Roni Kaplan said they could not tell from where the drone originated and what its objective was.

The military said the drone was initially spotted entering Israeli airspace from the Mediterranean Sea and heading south.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud Saturday named Abdi Farah Shirdon Saaid, as the country’s new prime Minister, nearly a month after the president was elected.

At a joint news conference here, the Somali president made the announcement of Saaid’s nomination.

Saaid, a businessman by profession, is a newcomer to Somalia politics. He is expected to form the cabinet within the next few weeks in consultation with the country’s president and various other parties.

Syrian rebels killed on Lebanon border

Dozens of fighters of the rebel Free Syrian Army have been killed in an operation by Syrian government forces in Homs province near the border with Lebanon, Lebanon-based Al-Mayadeen TV reported.

A base of one of the armed groups near the village of al-Qusayr was destroyed. At least 40 rebels including the leader of the group were killed.

Several militants, four of them Turkish citizens, were killed Saturday in Aleppo, Syrian news agency SANA reported.

Government forces repelled an attack by militants who “supposedly came from Turkey” in the north of Aleppo, it said.

Abducted Iranians released in Libya

Seven Iranian aid workers, who were abducted by unidentified people and detained for over two months in Libya, have been set free, Iran’s Ambassador to Libya Hussein Akbari said.

The Iranians, who were freed Saturday, are from the Red Crescent Society of Iran, Xinhua reported.

They had been taken from their vehicle by unidentified kidnappers in Libya’s eastern city of Benghazi, according to the Libyan branch of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Fire causes blast at Swedish power plant

A huge fire at a thermal power plant in Sweden caused an explosion in a turbine, but there were no reports of any casualties.

Control room personnel called rescue services when the fire alarm rang in the electricity company in Orebro city, around 160 km west of the capital city of Stockholm, Xinhua reported citing Swedish television channel SVT.

Rescue personnel were for some time unable to get into the building due to the heat inside. Firemen activated the sprinkler system an hour after the blaze started, which helped bring the fire under control.

LPG price hiked by Rs 11.42; petrol, diesel rates may go up

Cooking gas (LPG) price was today hiked by Rs 11.42 per cylinder following government decision to raise commission paid to the dealers. Petrol and diesel prices too may go up marginally as the Oil Ministry considers raising dealers commission by at least 23 paisa and 10 paisa a litre respectively.

The Ministry yesterday issued orders raising commission paid to LPG dealers from Rs 25.83 per 14.2-kg cylinder to Rs 37.25, government officials said. The 44 per cent or Rs 11.42 per cylinder increase in the commission on the subsidised cooking fuel is being passed on to consumers, they said.

‘Pakistan delaying on India visa accord’

Pakistan is yet to implement a visa agreement it signed with India last month, though New Delhi has already begun enforcing the new policy, a senate penal heard.

The Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs was told Friday that the delay was caused by the interior ministry, which was yet to present it before the cabinet for ratification, the Dawn reported.

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said the delay was “procedural in nature”.

Unsatisfied with the explanation, committee chairman Haji Adeel censured the ministry for moving slowly on the matter.

Former DMK minister arrested

Tamil Nadu Police Saturday arrested former DMK minister K. Ponmudi in a red sand quarrying case.

Ponmudi was the minister for mines and minerals and higher education in the previous DMK government that was voted out last May.

Ponmudi’s arrest in Villupuram, around 150 km from here, comes a day after the Madras High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail plea.

The police have registered a case against Ponmudi on a complaint that his son, Gowtham Sigamani, and other close relatives were involved in quarrying of red sand and not paying any fee to the state.

NCP demands CBI probe into Nifty ‘flash crash’

NCP today demanded a CBI probe into the 900-point ‘flash crash’ of National Stock Exchange (NSE) index Nifty, which had halted trade on the exchange for about 15 minutes.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said a CBI probe was necessary to find out the “conspiracy” behind the incident.

“This was a conspiracy to destabilise the economy, which was looking good after the Centre’s reform measures. Small investors have been looted and the need of the hour is to go into the root cause of the conspiracy,” NCP spokesman Nawab Malik said.

Troubled Kingfisher Airlines would have to submit a detailed plan to aviation regulator DGCA before they are allowed to resume flights, Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said today.
