Gas explosion kills over 90 in ‘flood-hit’ Ghana

Over 90 people have been killed in an explosion at a gas station in Ghana’s capital, Accra, the fire service said.

The victims had sought shelter there from the torrential rains, which had left many people homeless and without power in the city since the last two days, reports the BBC.

Local officials said that the morgues were full and added that the death toll was expected to rise.

Centre finalises guidelines for Smart Cities Mission and AMRUT

Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday finalised the guidelines for Smart Cities Mission and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

He held a meeting with officials to review the status of Smart Cities Mission and the AMRUT.

Naidu had held meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this issue yesterday.

In a tweet, he said the programmes will be launched soon.

The two programmes aim at recasting the urban landscape of the country to make urban areas more livable and inclusive besides driving the economic growth.

Ex-Egypt Prez Mubarak to be retried yet again over protesters’ killings

An Egyptian appeals court has reportedly directed ousted President Hosni Mubarak to stand for a second retrial over the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolution.

The retrial is scheduled to take place on November 5.

Mubarak was earlier cleared in a retrial in November 2014 after being imprisoned for life over the death of 800 demonstrators during the Arab Spring, reports the BBC.

The 87-year-old leader, who is currently in the Maadi military hospital in Cairo, was also convicted of corruption and sentenced to three years in jail earlier this year.

United States officials have warned that there is no way to keep a watch on Islamic State’s (IS) online encrypted communications as it continues spreading its propaganda and

recruiting messages to at least 2,00,000 people on social media across the globe.

According to Fox News, Michael Steinbach, head of the FBI’s counterterrorism division said that some companies build their models of business around “end-to-end encryption”.

The officials said that technology was complicating efforts to monitor several thousand IS’ propagandas.

China on Thursday called for a code of conduct pact with India to maintain peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), rather than the clarification of the border as proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Beijing last month.

Soon, Google app that will count calories in your Instagram food photos

Google is aiming to develop a new app that will estimate the calories of the food from the photos on people’s Instagram feed.

The idea came from DeepMind, a company Google bought in 2014 for 400 million dollars, and it will be called Im2Calories, People Magazine reported.

While the kinks of the app are still being worked out, Google has already filed its patent application for the app. (ANI)

New carry-on luggage ‘valet’ service at airport may speed up boarding process

The airlines plan to preload carry-on bags above passengers’ seats on some flights in order to speed up annoying boarding process.

The new “Early Valet” system would offer passengers the chance to have a steward take their baggage from them at the gate and place it in the compartment above their seats, the Independent reported.

As per a new study, people who have problems with their sense of smell may be at an increased risk for dying sooner than those who don’t.

The study found that older adults with a reduced ability to identify certain odors had an increased risk of dying during an average follow-up of 4 years.

The mortality rate was 45 percent in participants with the lowest scores on a 40-item smell test, compared with 18 percent of participants with the highest scores.
