Private sector HDFC Life today launched a health plan that provides financial support on diagnosis of early or major stages of cancer.

“The plan is distinct from standard critical illness policies as it provides a fixed lump sum benefit on diagnosis of early and major stages of cancer, waives future premiums and also pays regular income on diagnosis for treatment of cancer,” HDFC Life senior executive vice president Sanjay Tripathy said here.

A new study has suggested that certain host cell environments make malaria parasites resistant to drugs.

Of the two species of Plasmodium parasites commonly infecting humans, P. vivax grows exclusively in immature red blood cells called reticulocytes. P. falciparum can infect reticulocytes, but it grows primarily in mature red blood cells (called erythrocytes) which make up 99% of red cells in circulation.

US Republicans vote to retain Cuba travel restrictions

The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives has reportedly voted to retain restrictions on American citizens travelling to Cuba, despite a recent thaw in ties.

While rejecting proposals to permit regular scheduled flights to the Caribbean nation, the House also called for a rule that would require Americans to get a special licence before going to Cuba, reported the BBC.

They were voting on a transport funding bill which has provisions related to Cuba. U.S. President Barack Obama has threatened to veto the bill.

India, Netherlands delegation talks begin

Delegation-level talks between India and The Netherlands have begun in New Delhi.

Prime MInister Narendra Modi is leading the Indian delegation at the talks, while the Netherlands delegation is being led by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

It will be followed by a round table of the Dutch and Indian delegations with representatives of large companies from both the countries.

On the second day of his visit, Rutte will lay wreath at Mumbai’s Hotel Taj Mahal Palace for remembrance of 26/11 attacks.

Death toll from Pak flash flood rises to 14

The death toll from a flash flood caused by heavy rainfall in Khuzdar district’s Sarona area in Pakistan has risen to 14, while another six are still missing.

The 20 victims were travelling in a vehicle which was washed away in the floods caused by torrential rain that started in Balochistan on Wednesday night, reported The Express Tribune.

The deputy commissioner (DC) of Khuzdar, Abdul Waheed Shah, said the victims were all locals who were drowned in “nullah” (hill torrent) in Wadh Sarona.

Though old rocks hold on to their secrets, a geophysicist has unlocked clues trapped in the magnetic signatures of mineral grains in those rocks.

These clues from the study led by Michigan Technological University’s Aleksey Smirnov will help clear up the murky history of the Earth’s early core.

The work took him Down Under, where he drilled into rock outcrops in Australia’s Widgiemooltha dike swarm that are more than two billion years old.

Studying rocks this old and extracting data from them is tricky but helps unravel the core’s mysteries.

Poroshenko warns of possible ‘full-scale invasion’ of Ukraine by Russia

President Petro Poroshenko has asked the Ukraine military to prepare to defend against a possible “full-scale invasion” by Russia, as clashes intensified in eastern Ukraine.

Poroshenko told parliament that there was a “colossal threat” that large-scale fighting would resume. He also claimed that Moscow had deployed 9,000 of its troops in the conflict-torn region, the BBC reports.

The surge in violence in the government-held towns of Maryinka and Krasnohorivka, was the worst since the Minsk ceasefire took effect in February.
