Lokayukta needed to counter AAP’s ‘Virodh and Vidhroh’ politics: Congress

The Congress Party on Wednesday issued an ultimatum to the Aam Aadmi Party, demanding the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government to appoint a Lokayukta within two weeks.

“The biggest question is that the party, which resigned its government in only 49 days on the issue of the Janlokpal, has this time not appointed a Lokayukta even 120 days after coming to power. There was an existing Lokayukta during our government in Delhi; why has the AAP not appointed somebody?” Congress leader Ajay Maken said at a press briefing here.

Now, send ‘places’ from your desktop to iPhone via Google Maps

Google Maps has finally rolled out the handy ‘send to device’ feature for iOS users, months after introducing it to Android.

The function allows users to send the map of a place from their desktop to their iPhone or iPad . Users receive a notification on their device and once they tap on it, the app automatically takes them to that spot, reported The Verge.

In order to activate the feature, users will first have to enable it in the settings menu for Google Maps on iOS. (ANI)

Obama mulling deploying 500 more US troops to Iraq

United States President Barack Obama is reportedly mulling deploying up to 500 more American troops to Iraq to train local forces battling the Islamic State (IS) and setting up a new training base in Anbar province.

The news came just days after Obama admitted that the U.S. lacked a “complete strategy” for helping Iraqi troops in retaking territory lost to the IS, reported the BBC.

The terror outfit recently made stunning gains in Iraq and Syria, seizing Ramadi, Palmyra and Tadmur in the span of a month.

Arun Jaitley to visit US; meet Treasury Secretary, foreign investors

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will embark on a 10-day US visit beginning June 16 during which he will meet Treasury Secretary, foreign institutional investors and industry leaders.

He will travel to New York, Washington and San Francisco during the visit ending on June 25, sources said.

During the New York visit, Jaitley will interact with the officials of the New York Stock Exchange, meet FIIs and address students of two American institutes.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar passed a slew of directions after Mahilpalpur ssociation of hotels and guest houses filed an affidavit stating they would voluntarily close down and file fresh application before the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) for Consent to Operate.

Bribery row: ACB grants one-day bail to Revanth Reddy

The Anti-Corruption Bureau on Wednesday granted Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA A. Revanth Reddy, who was arrested for attempting to bribe a nominated member of the state assembly, a one-day interim bail.

According to reports, he has been granted bail to attend his daughter’s engagement ceremony.

Revanth Reddy had been arrested last week after the nominated member, Elvis Stephenson, lodged a complaint with the ACB.

The TDP MLA and his aide had gone to Stephenson’s residence in Secunderabad to hand over the cash when the ACB caught the two. (ANI)

Govt. intervenes to unclog payment of arrears to cane farmers

To help the industry clear its cane due arrears, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today approved a proposal to provide soft loans to the extent of Rs. 6000 crore to the sugar industry.

The CCEA has provided a year’s moratorium on this loan and will bear the interest subvention cost to the extent of Rs. 600 crore for the said period.

Cabinet approves signing of BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement

The Cabinet has approved the signing of the Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN) Motor Vehicle Agreement for the regulation of passenger, personal and cargo vehicular traffic amongst BBIN.

The agreement will be signed on June 15 at the BBIN Transport Ministers meeting in Thimpu, Bhutan.

Signing of the BBIN agreement will promote safe, economical efficient and environmentally sound road transport in the sub-region and will further help each country in creating an institutional mechanism for regional integration.

Bidding process for FIFA World Cup 2026 postponed

The bidding process for 2026 FIFA World Cup has been postponed after allegations were raised around 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

Russia and Qatar were selected to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups by a secret ballot of FiIFA’s 22 executive members in December 2010.

However, Swiss prosecutors are now investigating alleged financial irregularities surrounding the bidding process.

Jerome Valcke, secretary general of the governing body confirmed that it was “nonsense” to begin the bidding in such a climate, the BBC reported.
