400 more students for scholarship programme: UK Minister

As part of attracting more Indian students to universities in the United Kingdom in the backdrop of falling numbers, the British government would add 400 more students under its scholarship programme, a cabinet Minister said today.

“You know that there are large number of Indian students going to the UK. But numbers have been falling in the last 2-3 years. We think there is perception problem that they are not welcome in the UK. I have been trying to dismiss that. They are very much welcome in the UK,” Dr Vince Cable who is on a visit to India, told reporters here.

Manipuri student attacked in Bangalore, forced to speak Kannada

A 24-year-old engineering student from Manipur named T Michael Lamjathang was beaten up by three miscreants in Bangalore and was forced to speak Kannada.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 pm yesterday when Lamjathang was standing along the roadside with his two other friends after returning from a police station where he had gone to take permission for an upcoming cultural festival.

Over 35 per cent turnout in Haryana, Maha lagging

About 25 per cent turnout was today recorded in Maharashtra while over 35 per cent voting was held in Haryana, which witnessed stray incidents of violence, in the first six hours of polling in the riveting contest to elect assemblies in the two states.

In Maharashtra, which has 8.35 crore voters, though polling started on a brisk note, it lost some pace by noon and about 25 per cent of the electorate had cast their votes by 1 PM.

President Mukherjee extends birthday greetings to Abdul Kalam

President Pranab Mukherjee extended his birthday wishes to former President APJ Abdul Kalam, who turned 83 years old on Wednesday.

Nuclear submarine INS Arihant, other critical assets in Vizag safe

India’s first indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant and other “critical assets” in the Bay of Bengal are safe from the devastation wrought by cyclonic storm Hudhud in the southern port city of Visakhapatnam, an official said Wednesday.

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) spokesman Ravi Gupta told India Strategic (www.indiastrategic.in) today that “adequate precautions had been taken to secure INS Arihant and other critical assets off Visakhapatnam and elsewhere on India’s eastern seaboard well before Hudhud’s landfall on Sunday.

Akhilesh lays foundation stones of three big-ticket projects

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Wednesday laid the foundation stones of a 1,000-bed super-specialty hospital, a 100-acre Information Technology (IT) city and the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in the state capital.

The hospital will be built by the Medanta group and would be known as Medanta Avadh. It will be equipped with facilities like 30 operation theatres, 300 beds for critical care, a Unani medical centre and an Ayurvedic medical centre.

The hospital would have a separate research wing as well.

Four die in Nepal avalanche

At least four people were killed in an avalanche in Nepal’s Mustang district, officials said Wednesday.

The avalanche killed two Polish, one Israeli and one Nepalese citizen, Xinhua reported.

The process of recovering the dead bodies is under way, officials said.

The army has also rescued 38 tourists from the area after the situation worsened due to heavy snowfall.

In the wake of the cyclone Hudhud, the central and western parts of Nepal have experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorms in the past few days.

This Robin Hood Army feeds the homeless (Social Feature)

Every Sunday, at around 8.30 p.m., a group of volunteers in green t-shirts heads out in different directions with packed food like vada pav, khichdi and parathas to serve homeless people sleeping under the open skies in the capital.

This is not a government initiative, but a collective effort of two friends who have collaborated with different restaurants and eateries in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Bangalore to “serve the poor and destitute” through their Robin Hood Army, a four-month-old initiative in these respective cities.

UFO watching NASA astronauts on ISS spacewalk?

A latest NASA video showing a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS) has captured a blurry object behind an astronaut.

In a six-hour long spacewalk Oct 7, astronauts Reid Wiseman of NASA and Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency from Expedition 41 successfully relocated a failed cooling pump and conducted other equipment repairs and maintenance work outside the ISS.

The unidentified flying object was seen hovering for about five seconds where, just seconds earlier, no object could be spotted, media reports said.

‘Smart’ lithium battery that sends fire alert

US scientists have developed a ‘smart’ lithium-ion battery that alerts users of potential overheating and fire.

The new technology is designed for conventional lithium-ion batteries now used in billions of cell phones, laptops and other electronic devices as well as a growing number of cars and airplanes.

“Our goal is to create an early warning system that saves lives and property,” said Yi Cui, associate professor of materials science and engineering at Stanford University.

Man attacks engineering student, ends life

A man attacked with a sickle a young woman, who was studying engineering here, injuring her and then committed suicide by consuming poison.

The incident took place Monday at Aurora’s Engineering College in Chandrayangutta in southwest Hyderabad.

Pradeep attacked the girl at the college entrance and then consumed poison. Both were rushed to a hospital, where the assailant died while the victim is battling for life.
