CID bomb squad members defuse over 100 crude bombs in WB

Criminal Investigation Department ( CID) bomb squad members on Friday defused over 100 crude bombs that were found in Kaliachok.

The bombs were found in a farmland besides a railway track in the area.

“The officers of Kaliachok police station arrived at the spot and with the help of bomb squad succeeded in difusing the bombs,” said Malda Superintendent of Police Prasun Banerjee.

The police is investigating the matter.

Earlier this week, three people suffered injuries in a crude bomb blast in Malda district.

Black money case: Disclosure of names will make execution of treaties impossible, says AG

With the Centre telling the Supreme Court that it cannot disclose the names of all those having black money stashed abroad as it violates the double taxation avoidance agreement, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi on Friday said if confidentiality is not maintained, then the execution of treaties will become impossible.

“All these treaties require confidentiality, and provided that if the prosecution is to be filed in some cases,then in those cases all the details will be disclosed to the court and they will be in public domain,” said Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi.

Dhaula Kuan gang-rape sentence announcement on Oct. 20

The Dwarka Court on Friday reserved the quantum of sentence in the Dhaula Kuan gang-rape case till October 20.

All five accused in the 2010 abduction and gang-rape of a 30-year-old call centre executive in Dhaula Kuan were earlier pronounced guilty by a session court in New Delhi.

Shamshad alias Khutkan, Usman alias Kale, Shahid alias Chhota Billi, Iqbal alias Bada Billi and Kamruddin are the accused.

The victim, who hailed from the North-East, was abducted and raped on November 24, 2010.

Hearing of second case against Khmer Rouge leaders begins

A Cambodian international court Friday began hearing the second case against Khmer Rouge leaders facing charges of genocide and crimes against humanity while serving the former regime which killed 1.7 million people between 1975 and 1979.

The accused are Khmer Rouge number two, Nuon Chea, 88, and the former head of state Khieu Samphan, 83, who deny the charges against them.

Andhra appeals to public to donate generously for cyclone relief

The Andhra Pradesh government has appealed to people to donate generously to Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for relief, restoration and rehabilitation in the state’s cyclone-hit areas.

Chief Secretary I.Y.R. Krishna Rao said in view of the extensive damage by the severe cyclonic storm storm “Hudhud” in Visakhapatnam, Vizayanagaram and Srikakulam districts, people should come forward and donate generously.

He said in a statement that all donations to Chief Minister’s Relief Fund would be 100 percent exempted from the income tax under 80G of the IT Act.

Russia, EU, Ukraine to continue gas talks next week

Russia, the European Union (EU) and Ukraine will continue talks next week to settle the gas crisis, European Commission (EC) President Jose Manuel Barroso said Friday.

The announcement was made on the sidelines of the ongoing Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Milan.

The talks are scheduled to be held Oct 21 in Brussels.

An EC official said that Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak, Ukrainian Energy Minister Yuri Prodan and EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger, with the participation of Gazprom and Naftogaz, would be attending the meeting.

India test-fires sub-sonic missile Nirbhay

India Friday successfully test-fired its indigenously-developed nuclear-capable, sub-sonic long range cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’ from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha’s Baleswar district.

The sub-sonic missile, which has a capacity to hit targets at a distance of 1,500 km, was successfully test fired at 10.03 a.m. Friday, said B.K. Das, additional director of Chandipur Integrated Test Range.

“We have achieved a great feat by successfully testing this missile. It would help immensely in future,” said Das.

First US Ebola-infected nurse shifted from Dallas

Nina Pham, the first nurse to contract the Ebola virus in the US, has been moved to the National Institute of Health (NIH) outside Washington, one of the nation’s premier medical facilities which along with the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention is spearheading the fight against Ebola.

Pham, 26, was transferred late Thursday from the Dallas Presbyterian Hospital in Texas where she contracted the disease while attending to a Liberian, Thomas Eric Duncan, the first Ebola patient in the country who died Oct 8.

Paraguay journalist killed in ambush

Pablo Medina, a reporter in a Paraguayan newspaper was killed in an ambush along with a woman while travelling in his car Thursday. He was the third journalist to be killed in this South American nation this year.

Two people wearing camouflage clothing intercepted Medina’s car as the correspondent with the ABC Colour newspaper and the other victim were driving to Curuguaty and opened fire on the vehicle.

Medina apparently died instantly and police found the woman Antonia Almada, 19, wounded but still alive.

India calls for building SAARC power grid

India Friday called for building the SAARC power grid so that excess power produced in one region of South Asia can be used to meet deficits elsewhere.

Addressing the fifth South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation energy ministers meet here, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said that with the implementation of such a grid, hydel power generated in India’s northeast, for instance, could be transported via Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, on to Afghanistan, or offshore wind projects set up on the Sri Lankan coast could supply power to Pakistan or Nepal.

Pakistan Army violates ceasefire on LoC

Pakistan Army Friday violated the 2003 bilateral ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, forcing Indian Army to retaliate effectively.

“Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked firing at the Indian positions on the LoC in Hamirpur sector of Poonch district today (Friday) morning using automatic weapons,” a police officer said here.

“Indian Army retaliated effectively to Pakistan’s unprovoked firing with same calibre weapons. Firing exchanges started at 9.55 a.m. and continued till 10.30 a.m..”

India close to having its own navigation satellite system

India Thursday moved tantalisingly close to having its own satellite navigation system as it smoothly launched a satellite with its rocket – and is now only a step away from joining a select group of space-faring nations that have such a system.

With the successful launch early Thursday of the third of seven satellites planned under the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), India is just a satellite and a couple of months away from having its own satellite navigation system.

Two Afghan lawyers killed in bomb attack

Two Afghan lawyers were killed in a bomb attack in the country’s northern province of Baghlan Thursday, the latest in a string of targeted killings in the militancy-hit country, police said.

“A sticky bomb attached to a vehicle was detonated after two lawyers of Baghlan Provincial Court got into the vehicle near the court building at around midday, killing both on the spot,” Abdul Ghafar, head of the criminal investigation department, told Xinhua.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, the source added.

662 killed in fighting over Syrian Kurdish city

At least 662 people have died during the month-long offensive by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group on the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Kobane bordering Turkey, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said Thursday.

At least 20 of the victims were civilians, including 17 who were executed by the Islamists — four were beheaded — and the rest were killed in shelling on Kobane and surrounding villages, SOHR reported.

On the Kurdish side there were 268 fatalities, most of them members of the Protection Units of the Kurdish people, who died in combat or in the bombings.

No one can warn India: Rajnath Singh

With China reacting sharply to government’s plans to construct a border road in Arunachal Pradesh, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday sent a strong message, asserting that no one can warn India.

“Today, no one can give warning to India. We are a very powerful country,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a function in Manesar.

Mr. Singh was asked about China’s strong reaction to plans to construct a road network along McMahon line from Mago-Thingbu in Tawang to Vijaynagar in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh to match China’s infrastructure development.
