Bihar CM backtracks on remark on doctors

Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi Saturday made a U-turn on his controversial remark that he would chop off the hands of doctors found neglecting poor patients.

Manjhi told the media here that he had used a Hindi proverb “hath kaat denge” (will chop off hands) to take a tough line with negligent doctors.

“I did not mean what it was made out of the popular proverb that I used to say something. I never meant to chop off hands of doctors for negligence in treatment of poor,” he said.

Jayalalithaa released from Bangalore prison

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa was released from the central jail here after a Bangalore special court ordered her release Saturday, a day after the Supreme Court granted her bail.

“Jayalalithaa has left the jail… after completing the formalities,” Karnataka Inspector General of Prisons (IGP) K.V. Gagandeep told IANS.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Pannerselvam, a few cabinet ministers and the ruling AIADMK’s lawmakers were at the prison to receive her.

Toll in Ukraine conflict exceeds 3,700

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has said that the death toll in eastern Ukraine has risen to 3,707 due to the ongoing unrest in the region.

The report also said that 9,075 people have been injured.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) believe that the actual toll could be way higher, the report said.

As of Oct 17, 415,000 people have fled Ukraine.

Some 5.2 million people currently reside in conflict-torn areas in eastern Ukraine, the report said.

NASA captures rocket’s Mars descent data

NASA has successfully captured thermal images of a commercial rocket on its descent, a development that may provide engineering inputs for future missions to Mars, the US space agency said in a statement.

“Because the technologies required to land large payloads on Mars are significantly different than those used here on Earth, investment in these technologies is critical,” said Robert Braun, principal investigator for NASA’s Propulsive Descent Technologies (PDT) project.

The rocket SpaceX Falcon 9 was launched in September from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Anil Ambani takes ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign to Badri, Kedar

After Churchgate in downtown Mumbai, industrialist Anil Ambani Saturday took the Swachh Bharat campaign to Badrinath and Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, and appealed to the people to particularly keep India’s temple towns clean.

Ambani, who was among the nine people personally invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join the clean India campaign and also prasied for such efforts, said there were two reasons that he was visiting the two holy towns.

Jayalalithaa released from Bangalore jail

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa Saturday walked out of the central jail on the city’s outskirts after a special court here ordered her release.

“Jayalalithaa has left the jail a few minutes ago after completing the formalities,” Karnataka Inspector General of Prisons (IGP) K.V. Gagandeep told IANS.

The special court Saturday ordered her release from the jail a day after the Supreme Court granted her interim bail in a corruption case,

New polio case reported in Pakistan

A new polio case has been reported in Pakistan’s Khyber Agency, bringing the total number of cases detected this year to 200.

Khyber Agency has the highest number of reported polio cases after north Waziristan, Dawn online reported Saturday.

Official data shows that an overwhelming 96 percent of polio cases reported so far were found in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

Kunis spotted with her newborn

New mother Mila Kunis was spotted for the first time together with her daughter Wyatt Isabelle, whom she had with Ashton Kutcher.

Kunis was spotted seated behind the wheel of her car as she drove her newborn, who was reportedly lying on the back seat, reports eonline.com.

Kutcher was observed purchasing a family-friendly sedan late last month.

Earlier this month, he had shared the first picture of their daughter alongside seven other babies and dared his fans to “guess which one is ours”.

Kunis gave birth to their little princess at 1:23 a.m. Oct 1.

Dozens of local traders shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly not allowing international relief to the flood-ravaged Kashmir Valley.

Actors Akkineni Nagarjuna and Karthi will soon join hands for the first time to work in a yet-untitled Tamil-Telugu film, to be directed by Vamsi Paidapally.

Despite adverse gender ratio, women show the way in Haryana polls

If Haryana broke all previous voting records in Wednesday’s assembly elections, women voters had a significant, and almost equal, contribution as their male counterparts.

In four districts – Bhiwani, Jind, Kurukshetra and Mahendergarh – more women voted than men. It was a virtual dead heat in another six districts – Ambala, Kaithal, Sonipat, Yamunanagar, Fatehabad and Hisar. This means that women voters were either ahead or equal to men in almost half of the state.

Sriram Raghavan keen to make Tamil and Marathi film

Filmmaker Sriram Raghavan, who has helmed films like “Ek Hasina Thi”, “Johnny Gaddaar” and “Agent Vinod”, says making a Tamil and Marathi film is on his wishlist.

“It’s my dream to make a Tamil and a Marathi film. I don’t know when that will happen. I think Marathi and other regional industries are coming up with some wonderful subjects and we must look at these kind of subjects,” Raghavan told IANS.

Two BSF troopers arrested for molesting girl

Two Border Security Force (BSF) jawans were arrested for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old tribal girl in Tripura, police said here Friday.

“Two BSF jawans molested a tribal girl Thursday at bordering village Simna. The girl lodged a complaint in this regard with us,” a police officer said.

Other BSF troopers posted at Simna border outpost (BOP) were transferred elsewhere, the officer said.

Agitated villagers gheraoed the BOP demanding punishment for the accused BSF personnel.

‘BJP government has failed to check price rise’

Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sukhvinder Sukhu Friday slammed the central government for failing to check price rise and said the BJP has failed to fulfil the promises made during the Lok Sabha election.

Damaged infrastructure in cyclone-hit Visakhapatnam will be restored to its best: Andhra CM Naidu

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said Friday that cyclone-ravaged Visakhapatnam would experience normalcy soon and added that its battered infrastructure would be restored.

Cyclone Hudhud had smashed the coastline of Andhra Pradesh and the eastern state of Odisha on October 12, killing at least 25 people. It ripped apart tens of thousands of mud-and-thatch homes, flattened rice, banana and sugarcane plantations and snapped electricity lines.

Naidu had earlier on Thursday (October 16) visited the cyclone-hit areas to take stock of the situation.

14 killed in South Korea concert accident

Fourteen people were killed and 11 others sustained injuries when a ventilation window at an outdoor theatre near Seoul, where a music concert was being held, collapsed Friday.

The people were watching a K-Pop performance at an outdoor theatre in Seongnam, Gyeonggi province, when the incident happened, Xinhua reported citing Yonhap news agency.

Dozens of people, who were standing above the ventilation window for a better view, fell from a height of 10 metres when the window collapsed at about 5.50 p.m.. according to police.

Shiv Pandit bags role in ‘Meet The Patels’

Actor Shiv Pandit, who became popular via TV show “F.I.R.” and was appreciated for his work in the movie “Shaitan”, will be seen in a key character in the forthcoming film “Meet The Patels”. He is excited about the “clean comedy”.

To be directed by Saurabh Varma, the film is based in Mumbai and is about two Gujarati boys Tom Patel and Jerry Patel, who know how to live life to the fullest and would do anything except hard work.

Chandrababu Naidu vows to rebuild cyclone-hit Vizag

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu Friday vowed to rebuild cyclone-battered Visakhapatnam and develop it as one of the best cities in the world.

“We will now focus on rebuilding the city. It will again become the commercial capital of the state. I have no doubt about it,” said Naidu, who is camping here for last five days to supervise relief operations.

He said the rebuilt city will have a new name like “new Visakhapatnam”. He told reporters that he remained committed to develop the port city as a top Information Technology destination.

Ticket sales for IPTL Delhi leg to begin soon

The online ticket sales for the inaugural International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) Delhi leg to be held Dec 6-8, will begin post-Diwali weekend.

The tickets will be sold in phases, with close to 6,000 tickets available across price categories ranging from Rs.3,240 to Rs. 49,680, an IPTL release said.
