Kidney stones may increase bone fracture risk

People, especially women, who develop kidney stones may be at increased risk of experiencing bone fractures, finds a research.

Those who form stones in the kidneys and urinary tract – a condition called urolithiasis – may have reduced bone mineral density and be at an increased risk of bone fractures, the findings showed.

“The significantly higher risk at certain ages in males and females has profound public health implications,” said Michelle Denburg from the University of Pennsylvania in the US.

TDP seeks governor’s intervention on farmers’ issues

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Friday sought the Telangana governor’s intervention to address the problems faced by farmers.

Blaming the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government for the suicides of farmers, the TDP sought immediate steps to help the distressed farmers.

A delegation of TDP leaders led by L. Ramana met Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan here Friday and submitted a memorandum.

Ramana, who is heading the TDP in Telangana, said the government’s failure to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to farmers is leading to their suicides.

The 17th Karmapa Lama, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, attended the 43rd founding anniversary celebrations of the Tibetan Delek Hospital here on Thursday.

Asian Games champions India will play a four-match hockey Test series against Australia to prepare for the FIH Champions Trophy 2014 slated in Bhubaneswar Dec 6-14, Hockey India (HI) announced Friday.

The 21-member India squad will depart for Australia Oct 29 and the series starts Nov 4, followed by matches on Nov 5, 8, 9 at the Perth Hockey Stadium. India will also play one training game against Australia A, Nov 1.

Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Friday adopted ‘ChepalaUppada’ village of Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam district for the rehabilitation and development in the aftermath of recent Cyclone ‘Hudhud’.

Naidu, who extensively toured the cyclone-affected areas for an assessment of the ongoing rehabilitation efforts, has decided to donate his one month salary besides a contribution of Rs. 25 lakhs from the MPLADS funds for rebuilding of ‘ChepalaUppada’ village and adjoining hamlets.

Indian mission warns Malaysian employers against abuse of Indians

The Indian high commission in Malaysia has warned employers against physical abuse and ill-treatment of Indian manpower in Malaysia.

The high hommission had been working very closely with the Malaysian ministry of human resources to try and address grievances of Indian workers so that such cases of abuse were curtailed and remedial action taken, a statement issued by the commission said Friday.

The statement says that the high commission is still getting information of cases of physical abuse and ill-treatment of Indian manpower in Malaysia.

Congress facing a coup, claims BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday said that comments on black money made by former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram point towards an impending coup in the Congress.

Earlier in the day, Chidambaram, in an interview with a media organisation, had said that the disclosure of the names of account holders having black money stashed abroad would not affect the Congress party as a whole, it would only embarrass the individuals who are named.

Delhi gets 293 Diwali fire calls

The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received 293 calls on Diwali — a five-year record — but only 55 related to firecrackers, an official said Friday.

“This is the highest figure in the past five years,” a senior fire official told IANS. “From the midnight of Oct 22-23 till 7 a.m. Oct 24, we got 293 calls of fire incidents from the city.

“Of these, 55 were related to fire caused by crackers. In most cases, the reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained,” he added.

1 D slammed for using ‘chained chimpanzee’ in new music video

One Direction has been blasted by a UK-based charity called Wild Futures, for using a chained up chimpanzee in their video of ‘Steal My Girl.’

The charity was disgusted at the behind the scenes photos that showed the members of the boy band playing with a monkey actor, who they held on a chain lead, and have asked the band to pull the new music video, the Mirror reported.

Even after a spokesperson for the band has said that no animals were hurt in the making of the video and all the rules were followed, the charity has written to the band, which would soon be made public.

A doctor in New York has tested positive for Ebola virus after he returned from treating the patients in Guinea on Thursday.

It has sparked off a search for anyone who might have come into contact with him, reported the New York Times.

At least three people he had contact with in recent days have been placed in remote areas.

Three union ministers increase assets in five months

The assets of at least three union ministers have increased since they assumed office five months ago, a joint statement by the National Election Watch and Association of Democratic Reforms said Friday.

The highest increase in assets in five months was shown by Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda.

“His assets have shown an increase of Rs.10.46 crores, from Rs.9.88 crores as declared in Lok Sabha 2014 elections to Rs.20.35 crores in the 2014 declarations of the Union Council of Ministers to the PMO,” the statement said.

Google doodle celebrates one month of India’s Mars mission

Google Friday celebrated one month of India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), the Mangalyaan, by putting up a special doodle on its home page for India.

The recently launched Mangalyaan by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has completed one month in the Martian Orbit.

In its very first attempt, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission traversed over 650 million km through deep space for over nine months to successfully reach the planet’s orbit.
