EC announces five phased polling for Jharkhand and J-K

The Election Commission on Saturday announced that elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand will be held in five-phases beginning from November 25.

The elections in the two states will take place on November 25, December 2, December 9, December 14 and December 20. Apart from these two states, there are three assembly constituencies in Delhi – Mehrauli, Tughlaqabad and Krishna Nagar-where elections will also be held.

Preventive health care should be given importance: Modi

Mumbai, Oct 25 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday said preventive health care and lifestyle should be given importance as a way to keep healthy, while inaugurating the Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital here.

He praised the Reliance Foundation for rebuilding the Hurkisondas Nurrotumdas Hospital and said the hospital has undergone a transformation and is seeing a new beginning.

Shimla to have full-fledged cancer hospital

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said Saturday that the government was considering opening a full-fledged cancer hospital in the suburbs of the capital.

He said that the cancer wing functioning at the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH) in Shimla was not fully developed to cater to the rush of patients.

A mammography machine is going to be installed in the hospital very soon.

Sadashiv Amrapurkar in critical condition

Versatile actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar, who has been hospitalised at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH) here, is now on life support ventilator and his condition is critical, says his daughter Reema Amrapurkar.

“He is on life support ventilator now but his condition is critical. However, his body is responding well to the ventilators. He suffered from lung infection a few weeks back following which he was hospitalized at Kokilaben hospital,” Reema Amrapurkar told IANS.

The 64-year-old was hospitalised two weeks ago and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit.

PM inaugurates Reliance Foundation Hospital

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday inaugurated the revamped Sir Hurkisondas Nurrotumdas Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre here.

Located in south Mumbai, the hospital in its 90th year was rebuilt by the Reliance Foundation ,led by its chairperson Nita Ambani, into a modern 19-storey tower with two heritage wings, the foundation said in a statement.

Nita Ambani termed it “a historic day” in the life of the hospital which was re-dedicated to the people of Mumbai.

Cafe Coffee Day ordered to slam doors on QNet reps

As part of efforts to stop alleged illegal activities of Hong Kong-based multi-level marketing company QNet, accused of involvement in a Rs 425-crore fraud, Mumbai police has ordered popular coffee shop Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) to shut doors to representatives of the controversial firm.

Investigations by Mumbai Police Economic Offence Wing (EOW), probing the scheme, discovered that representatives and employees of the beleaguered company and the firms associated with it often frequent the city based outlets of CCD to lure prospective members.

Sundar Pichai to head key Google products, services

Search engine giant Google in a reorganisation of its management has assigned Sundar Pichai the leadership of core Google products, technology magazine Recode reported.

In an exclusive report Recode said Google has sent a memo Oct 24 to staff explaining the changes. It said CEO Larry Page is transferring leadership of core Google products to Sundar Pichai, quoting sources close to the situation.

It’s a huge portfolio for the 42-year-old Chennai born Pichai Sundararajan, popularly known as Sundar Pichai.

Grand opening for ‘HNY’, collects Rs. 44.97 crore on first day

Shah Rukh Khan starrer “Happy New Year” has hit the right note with audiences as the film earned a record Rs 44.97 crore on the opening day of its release.

Produced by Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt Ltd and directed by Farah Khan, “Happy New Year” is a heist drama. The film that released Friday also features Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Sonu Sood, and Vivaan Shah.

According to a statement released by the production house, the film has earned a “record breaking opening at the box-office in India”

Netaji deputy, Nehru aide was Soviet spy: British documents

A deputy of freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, an “old friend” of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and a former Indian ambassador, A C N Nambiar, has been described as a Soviet spy.

According to documents declassified under the 30-year-rule at the National Archives here, Nambiar went to Berlin in 1924 as a journalist and worked with the Indian communist group, visiting Moscow as a Soviet “guest” in 1929.

Sailor’s wife complaints against Navy

Wife of a Naval sailor belonging to the Eastern Naval Command, who had raised allegations of financial irregularities against his senior officers, today alleged her husband was being illegally kept in a hospital here and efforts were being made to establish that he was suffering from mental illness.

Sunil Kumar Sahu, shipwright artificer at INS Kattabomman, Vijayanarayanam, in Tirunelveli, which comes under the Eastern Naval command, had allegedly raised allegations of corruption against his commanding officers.

Nissan to recall 9,000 units of Micra, Sunny models in India

Japanese auto major Nissan is recalling 9,000 units of its compact car Micra and mid-sized sedan Sunny in India to replace defective airbags as part of a global recall.

The recall will cover cars manufactured between 2008 to 2012 that use safety airbags made by its supplier Takata.

“Nissan plans to begin notifying customers soon. Nissan dealers will replace the driver airbag inflator with a correctly manufactured part at no cost to the customers for parts or labour,” a Nissan India spokesperson said.

Four shot at in Delhi rioting, 33 arrested

Four people were shot at during a clash between two communities over a petty issue in east Delhi’s Trilokpuri area, police said, adding that 33 people have been arrested.

“Four persons were reportedly injured by gun shots but these were not fired by police. We are trying to identify who were behind the firing,” a police officer told IANS.

The firing took place around 4 p.m. Saturday, said the officer.

Earlier, police said ten people were arrested Friday and 23 Saturday for rioting in the area.

Ebola cases exceed 10,000: WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO), in its latest report Saturday said the number of Ebola virus cases has exceeded 10,000, with 4,922 deaths.

Only 27 of the cases have occurred outside the three worst-hit countries — Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea — BBC reported.

These three countries account for all but 10 of the fatalities.

Mali became the latest nation to record a death, a two-year-old girl.

More than 40 people known to have come into contact with her have been quarantined.

Guard jumps to death in Gurgaon

A private security guard committed suicide Saturday by jumping from the 11th floor of a building here, police said. This is the third such incident in the building.

Hari Shankar, hailing from Bulandshahr district in Uttar Pradesh, jumped off from Park Central building in sector 30.

“The deceased had Saturday joined duty after Diwali vacation…. No suicide note was recovered,” police said.

Earlier, in separate incidents two people had committed suicide by jumping from the top of the same building.

President launches stamp on Sri Lankan Buddhist revivalist

President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday released a commemorative postage stamp on Sri Lankan Buddhist revivalist and writer Anagarika Dharmapala.

“Release of the commemorative postage stamp on Anagarika Dharmapala will contribute towards further strengthening the bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka and bring the two nations closer,” Mukherjee said.

He expressed confidence that the ties between the two countries will continue “to further strengthen in the coming years to the mutual benefit of our two peoples”.

Sensex bounces back on strong investor sentiments

The benchmark BSE Sensex and CNX Nifty gained around three per cent to end at one-month high during the truncated week, driven by strong investor sentiments on hopes of further policy reforms after a strong show by BJP in assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana.

Hend pulls two clear of Lahiri at Macau Open

Modi breaks ice with media, poses for selfies

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday broke the ice when he met journalists, shook hands with them and smiled for selfies.

This happened after Modi was being blamed for keeping the media at arms length.

A “Diwali Milan” or Diwali meet as called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), this was Modi’s first formal outreach to the media since he became the prime minister.

Though journalists had to come an hour in advance for the much-awaited meet, none complained.

A relaxed Modi arrived around noon, wearing a light pink kurta and a pink jacket.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, whose latest release “Happy New Year” has kept the cash register ringing, says he agreed to do Maneesh Sharma’s “Fan” because he wanted to do a cosy film which is intense yet commercially viable.

“As an actor, I feel that having done a big film, ‘Happy New Year’, I wanted to do a cosy film which is intense and yet commercially viable. Maneesh came out of the blue and he reminded me of a subject he had narrated eight years ago,” the 48-year-old told reporters in a group interview.

Crib deaths continue in Bengal, toll reaches 18

Crib deaths at West Bengal’s Malda Medical College and Hospital continues unabated with three more babies dying since Friday to take the toll to 18.

“Three more babies, all brought here in very critical condition, have died since Friday. Since Monday 18 babies, mostly newborn have died,” Medical Superintendent and Vice Principal M.A. Rashid said adding that all the infants were either underweight or malnourished.

Rashid said special measures including arranging for 24 hours availability of neonatal experts are being taken to prevent more deaths.

Iranian woman executed over murder

An Iranian woman was executed Saturday in Iran after she was convicted of murdering a man seven years ago.

Reyhaneh Jabbari was hanged in the early morning after being found guilty of killing Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi, a former employee of Iran’s intelligence ministry, in July 2007, Press TV reported.

The 26-year-old woman has confessed to the murder claiming that she had stabbed the man to death to defend herself against attempted rape, but her claims were rejected based on further investigations and crime scene evidence.

Bangladeshi leader, 63 activists arrested

A Bangladesh National Party (BNP) leader and 63 activists were arrested here Saturday for allegedly planning violent activities.

Moazzem Hossain Alal, president of the party’s youth affiliate, Juba Dal and the activists were arrested during a meeting at his residence, bdnews24.com quoted a police official as saying.

“They were in a meeting at the basement of the building at Lalmatia. We had information that the meeting was meant to plan for violent activities during Sunday’s strike,” the official said.

“The raid was conducted on receiving that information,” he said.

Punjab launches scheme for water-logged areas

Starting with two villages in the worst affected district of Muktsar, the Punjab government Saturday launched a scheme for develpment of infrastructure in these villages.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, while launching the scheme in Ratta Khera and Ratta Khera Chota villages, said that the Punjab government was committed to tackle the water-logging problem in the area.

Badal said that under the scheme, development of infrastructure and promotion of skill training and allied farming sectors would be a priority.

Delayed Mizoram budget in state assembly Nov 11

The delayed budget session of the Mizoram assembly will begin Nov 11 with the state finance minister expected to table the annual budget for the 2014-15 fiscal, an official said here Saturday.

“The two-week-long budget session will be from held from Nov 11 to Nov 26,” an official of the state assembly said.

Finance, Planning and Programme Implementation Minister Lalsawta will present the full-fledged budget for the current fiscal (2014-2015) on the first day of the session.

‘Windies walk-out a collapse of governance’
