Twitter lets researchers scan its vast public data

The micro-blogging site has finally given access to its vast database to a selected pool of researchers to study tweets and find answers to a variety of issues.

As part of its ambitious data grant programme, Twitter is allowing academic researchers across various fields to “go back and study things” over, with almost a decade of historical data, Washington Post reported.

Meghna Gulzar silent on reuniting with Tabu

Filmmaker Megna Gulzar, who is directing a film based on Aarushi Muder case, has reportedly teamed up with Tabu again for the film.

When asked to confirm the news, Meghna didn’t deny the news, but said: “I am unable to comment on that right now. I am extremely sorry.”

Sources close to the project, which is scripted by Vishal Bhardwaj who is also co-producing the film, said that Tabu is part of the project titled “Talwar” along with Irrfan. “About 80 percent of the shoot is completed,” said a source.

Actress Marcia Strassman passed away

Actress Marcia Strassman, known for her roles in “Welcome Back, Kotter” and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”, died here. She was 66.

Strassman, who was battling breast cancer, died at her home here Friday, confirmed her sister Julie Strassman and friend, director Bob Weide, reports hollywoodreporter.com

Rolling Stones get hands on ICC World Cup trophy

Renowned British rock band Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and drummer Charlie Watts, currently in Australia for their 14 On Fire world tour, took time off from their busy schedule to visit the Bradman Museum and were also shown the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) 2015 World Cup trophy here Sunday.

They were taken for an exclusive tour of the famous museum by John Bradman, son of Australia legend Don Bradman.

Mental illness doubles cardiac, stroke risks

People facing mental health challenges are twice as likely to contract heart diseases, found a research.

Psychiatric medications, unhealthy activities and access to health care are three major factors that account for the increased risk, the findings showed.

“This population is at high risk, and it is even greater for people with multiple mental health issues,” said lead author of the study Katie Goldie from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto in Canada.

For the study, the researchers used data from the Canadian Community Health Survey.

Death sentence demanded for South Korean sunken ferry captain

South Korean prosecutors Monday demanded a death penalty for the captain of the Sewol ferry that sank in April, killing more than 300 people.

Lee Joon-seok, 69, was indicted on charges of murdering more than 300 passengers as he was the first to be rescued as the ill-fated ship was sinking off South Korea’s southern coast April 16, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Prosecutors also asked a district court to sentence three crew members, including the first mate, to life in prison for the same charge.

MP: Eight killed in jeep-truck collision

Eight persons were killed today and seven others injured when the jeep in which they were travelling collided with a truck near Roshiya crossing, 25 km from the district headquarters, police said.

The victims were on their way to Omkarreshwar for a pilgrimage when the mishap took place around 12 noon on Indore-Icchapur State Highway.

All of them are related to each other and belong to Pune and Bhusawal (Maharashtra), Khandwa SP, Manoj Sharma said.

Among the deceased, three are men along with as many women besides two children, police said.

Five more arrested for attacking Bengal police team

Five more people were arrested Sunday for attacking a police team Friday that left three cops injured in West Bengal’s Birbhum district.

With this, the total number of arrests has gone up to 10.

Inspector General of Police (Western Zone) Siddh Nath Gupta said: “We have arrested five more people in this connection. Two of them have been remanded in police custody and three sent to judicial custody.”

Police Saturday arrested five people who were remanded in judicial custody till Oct 14.
