India uncovers suspected plot to assassinate Bangladeshi PM

India’s top counter-terrorism agency on Wednesday declared that it had uncovered a suspected plot by a banned militant group to assassinate the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and carry out a coup.

India will hand over a dossier to Bangladesh with details of the plan by members of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, which has carried out scores of attacks in India’s eastern neighbour, the government and police officials said.

Delhi Police ensures adequate arrangements for ‘Run-for-Unity’ programme

Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Thursday said that all necessary arrangements have been made for tomorrow’s ‘ Run-for-Unity ‘ programme.

“All necessary arrangements from India Gate to Vijay Chowk have been ensured. The arrangements pertaining to local police security personnel and traffic will be there,” Bassi told the media here.

“Our efforts will be to see that those people who will be coming here to participate are not inconvenienced,” he added.

PM Modi praises Amitabh for Swachh Bharat initiative

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised the efforts by Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan after the latter began a cleanliness drive in his neighbourhood.

“Who wont get inspired when @SrBachchan himself wields the broom andjoins Swachh Bharat Mission! Very significant effort,” tweeted Prime Minister Modi.

On Wednesday, Bachchan had tweeted two pictures of his efforts, which were later retweeted by the Prime Minister.

“T 1659 – And before the finale .. it was ‘Swach Bharat Abhiyaan’ .. went on the streets and broomed and collected dirt to clean up the place,” Bachchan tweeted.

Congress in favour of dissolution of Delhi Assembly

The Congress on Thursday sought an immediate dissolution of the Delhi Assembly and demanded that fresh elections should be held in the state.

“Delhi has not had a government for the last one year. The Delhi Assembly should be immediately dissolved, elections should be called for and a new government should be formed in Delhi,” said Congress leader Manish Tewari .

“After all the dramatist persona has not changed, the situation and circumstances have not changed. One year has elapsed, the President’s rule cannot go on forever,” he added.

Two Maoists held with ammunition in Jharkhand

The Jharkhand police on Wednesday arrested two Maoists with ammunition in the state’s Latehar district.

Latehar Superintendent of Police Michael Raj S said that his force had attained major success by arresting two notorious Maoists who were involved in several violent activities since 2011.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday urged the people to ensure the success of the ‘Run for Unity’ programme, which will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Vijay Chowk tomorrow.

BJP demand arrest of AIUDF chief, allege militant links

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters in Assam on Wednesday took to the streets, demanding the immediate arrest of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badaruddin Ajmal, accusing him of having links with militant outfits.

“Members of Bharatiya Janata Party youth organisation of Guwahati district have decided to protest and we demand that Ajmal be immediately arrested,” said Mukto Deka, a protester.

BJP MP Bijoya Chakravarty said few years back the matter of alleged ties between AIUDF and militant outfits was taken up with the Indian parliament.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday described the arrest of its fact-finding team led by Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi for defying prohibitory orders in West Bengal’s Birbhum district as a ‘matter of grave concern’, saying Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee-led TMC regime does not want the law and order to prevail in the state.

“What is happening in Bengal is a matter of grave concern. This shows that the dispensation of Bengal, the Mamta dispensation does not want the law and order situation to prevail in Bengal.” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told ANI here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday lauded the efforts of Laila Shah, a resident of the riot-hit Trilokpuri area of the national capital, for her efforts in cleaning her neighbourhood in the aftermath of the disturbance.

“Good effort by Laila Shah andher friends towards Clean India.Such efforts are a big strength for Swachh Bharat Mission!” the Prime Minister tweeted.

According to reports, Shah, who is a eunuch, was inspired by Prime Minister Modi’s call for a clean India and started collecting shards of broken glass and bricks after the clashes in her area.

Jammu and Kashmir Police Thursday ordered an inquiry into a senior police officer allegedly having his shoe-laces tied by an orderly.

State Director General of Police (DGP) K. Rajendra Kumar told IANS that he has ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident.

“Yes, I have ordered an inquiry into the incident. We will wait for the report,” the DGP said.

Chopper deal: HC notice to ED on Khaitan’s bail plea

The Delhi High Court Thursday issued notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on a bail plea of businessman Gautam Khaitan, arrested in a money laundering case related to the AgustaWestland chopper deal.

Justice V.P. Vaish sought response from the ED and asked it to file a status report on the issue by Nov 11.

Filing the bail plea, Khaitan said he has been fully cooperating with the investigation and his arrest by the ED is based purely on speculation, conjectures and surmises.

SC stays proceedings on defamation cases against Swamy

The Supreme Court today stayed proceedings on criminal defamation cases filed against BJP leader Subramanian Swamy by AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa.

A bench of Justices Deepak Mishra and U U Lalit also issued notices to Centre and Tamil Nadu government on Swamy’s plea for scrapping the provisions for criminal defamation in penal laws.

The court stayed the proceedings in all five defamation cases filed against Swamy in Sessions court of Chennai.

Thousands in Bihar pray to setting sun on Chhath

Hundreds of thousands of people, mainly women, marked the Chhath festival across Bihar Wednesday by fasting, praying, singing traditional songs and making offerings to the setting sun.

Devotees attired in new clothes sang folk songs as they prayed to the sun god and set lit earthen lamps afloat on rivers, lakes and other water bodies.

The four-day-long Chhath festival began Monday as devotees took a dip in rivers, a tradition known as ‘nahai khai’.

It was followed by the ritual of ‘kharna’ Tuesday, when sweet dishes were prepared.

List of 627 foreign account holders submitted to SC

The central government Wednesday submitted to the Supreme Court the names of the 627 people who are holding accounts in foreign banks as revealed to it by the French government.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi handed over two sealed envelopes to a bench of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and Justice Madan B. Lokur. One envelope had the list of names and the correspondence between the Indian and French government, while the other had the status report of the steps taken by the government.

‘One-third India’s women, children underweight’

India’s improved ranking in the Global Hunger Index is good news, but the country still has a long way to go as one-third of its women and children under five still underweight, experts said Wednesday.

India improved its position from 63rd in 2013 to 55th in 2014 in the Global Hunger Index released recently.

“India has clearly made progress towards improving nutrition, but the road ahead is still long,” said Purnima Menon, Senior Research Fellow at IFPRI and co-director of POSHAN.
