PM Modi to visit Myanmar, Australia and Fiji

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be travelling to Myanmar, Australia and Fiji next week, where he will participate in various summits and bilateral meetings.

Starting November 11, the Prime Minister will be travelling to these three countries, where he hopes to strengthen relations between India and its allies, especially nations belonging to the Asia-Pacific region.

“Starting 11th November I would be travelling to Myanmar, Australia and Fiji to participate in various summits and bilateral meetings,” he tweeted.

Mining baroness Radha Timblo, who allegedly has a Swiss bank account, has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, an official said Thursday.

Radha Timblo, who runs Timblo Pvt Ltd, was in the news recently after her name was revealed by the central government for having a Swiss bank account.

Officials said Timblo has been asked to report to the ED office in Panaji Nov 18.

Andhra varsity professor held for suspected Maoist links

An associate professor of Andhra University has been arrested for suspected links with the Maoists, Andhra Pradesh Police said Thursday.

His family has, however, complained that he was kidnapped from his home.

Police in Visakhapatnam arrested J. Appa Rao on receiving information that he has links with the Maoists.

Visakhapatnam rural police said Rao was suspected to be involved in supplying explosives to the extremists.

A police officer said they would present Rao before media by Thursday evening.

British scientists have found a drug combination that can trigger the self-destruct process in lung cancer cells — paving the way for new treatments.

The combination of two drugs, called TRAIL and a CDK9 inhibitor, forced the cancer cells to self-destruct, the findings showed.

When healthy cells are no longer useful, they initiate a chain of events culminating in self destruction.

But cancer cells swerve away from this suicide path and become immortal. This means that cells grow out of control — causing tumours to form.

Bakers in Kerala have created a record by making the longest eggless cake to celebrate the 131st anniversary of cake baking in India.

The 600-feet long cake has been recorded by the officials of Limca Book of Records and certified as the “Longest ever made eggless cake in India”.

The cake weighing around 3120 kilogram has been imprinted with 720 photos of historic people, political leaders, well-known personalities, cultural art forms, temples, churches and even famous captive temple elephants of Kerala are printed using edible digital printing technique.

Human rights groups took out a protest march through the national capital on Saturday to seek justice for the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots on its 30th anniversary.

“Today, human rights groups have come together to demand justice for the victims of 1984 and also for punishment to the guilty. They are also demanding that wherever there has been communal violence and the people are killed in the name of religion or caste, the guilty should be punished, and the government should sternly deal with it,” said senior advocate H.S. Phoolka, who also participated in the protest.

BJP welcomes move to challenge death sentence awarded to Tamil Nadu fishermen

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday welcomed New Delhi’s decision to legally challenge the death sentence awarded to five fishermen from Tamil Nadu by a Sri Lankan court for alleged drug trafficking.

“In keeping with the struggle of the five fishermen who have been awarded death sentence in Sri Lanka, the spokesperson of MEA has maintained that the Indian Government would continue with legal and consular assistance to these five Indian fishermen. This is a welcome step,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said.

US-Japan joint rain radar mission to end next year

After 17 years of groundbreaking 3-D images of rain and storms, the joint NASA and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) will come to an end next year, the US space agency said in a statement.

NASA predicts that science operations will cease in or around April 2015.

Orbiting at an angle to the equator that covers 35 degrees north to 35 degrees south of the equator, TRMM carries five instruments that collectively measure the intensity of rainfall, characteristics of the water vapour and clouds, and lightning associated with the rain events.

Nearly four children are abused everyday in Goa and most of such offences remain unreported, as per an NGO working against child abuse.

“On an average four children are abused in Goa daily. As per government statistics, the number of cases are on the rise,” said Ashwini Verenkar, project director of El-Shaddai Charitable trust which runs Panaji-based NGO called SCAN.

The NGO, which has been active in rescuing children in distress, has found that several cases of abuse go unreported and children are abused mostly by the people known to them.
