Pak court issues non-bailable arrest warrant against Musharraf

A district and session judge in Pakistan has reportedly issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against former military ruler General (retired) Pervez Musharraf in connection to the murder of former Lal Masjid cleric Ghazi Abdul Rasheed.

Judge Kamran Busharat Mufti also turned down a plea requesting complete exemption for Musharraf from appearing in the court, reports the Dawn.

Police has been directed to arrest the former president and present him in court for the next hearing of the case, which is expected to take place on July 24.

Mumbai rain leaves passengers stranded at airport

Passengers were left stranded at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on Friday, after flights were delayed due to heavy rains along the nation’s western coast, especially in Mumbai and the Konkan region.

The rains are expected to continue for some more days.

In the last 24 hours, Mumbai has recorded 283 mm of rainfall, which pushes the total received so far in June to 537 mm.

Bombay High Court Chief Justice Mohit S. Shah had earlier in the day declared a public holiday for all courts in the city due to the excessive rain, which has disrupted normal life.

Scientists one step closer to finding HIV vaccine

New research led by scientists has represented a leap forward in the effort to find a vaccine against HIV virus.

Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and The Rockefeller University showed in mice that an experimental vaccine candidate designed at TSRI can stimulate the immune system activity necessary to stop HIV infection.

The researchers’ long-term goal is to design a vaccine that prompts the body to produce antibodies that bind to HIV and prevent infection.

Mumbai hooch death toll rises to 35

Even as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an inquiry into a spurious liquor case in the Laxmi Nagar area of Mumbai, the death toll from the tragedy has risen to 35.

It is being reported that at least ten persons are still undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the city.

Mumbai Police has, in the meanwhile, confirmed the detention of Raju Fernandes aka Langda for his alleged role in the case.

Australia has welcomed the celebration of yoga on 21 June, which has been declared by the United Nations as International Yoga Day.

Morsi to appeal against conviction over protesters’ killing in 2012

Egypt’s former President Mohammed Morsi is set to appeal against the jail sentence handed down to him by a court for ordering the kidnapping, torturing and killing of protesters in 2012, his lawyers said.

Morsi, along with 12 other Muslim Brotherhood members, was sentenced to 20 years in prison without parole for violence, kidnapping and torture. Morsi’s defence lawyers have urged Egypt’s High Court to dismiss the sentences and order a retrial for all the defendants before another criminal court, reported News24.

SC rejects Subrata Roy’s immediate bail plea

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to grant immediate bail to Sahara chief Subrata Roy and linked his release to the full payment of dues totalling over Rs 36,000 crores.

According to reports, the apex court stated that Roy’s release is subject to the furnishing of Rs 5,000 crore in cash and RS 5,000 crore in bank guarantee, with Sahara to arrange the payment of the dues in nine equal instalments over a period of 18 months from the date of his release.

Cassini probe captures stunning views of Saturn’s moon Dione

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has sent back images of rugged landscape of Saturn’s fracture-faced moon Dione from its latest flyby.

On Aug. 17, the spacecraft will make its final flyby of Dione, diving to within 295 miles (474 kilometers) of the surface. The final Dione encounter will be Cassini’s second-closest brush with the icy moon.

A December 2011 flyby saw the spacecraft reach an altitude of just 60 miles (100 kilometers) above Dione. (ANI)
