Liverpool seal five-year deal with Charlton’s Joe Gomez

Charlton defender Joe Gomez has signed a five-year contract with Liverpool for 3.5million pounds.

Although the 18-year-old would start pre-season with the Premier League Club, he is likely to move to Championship side Derby on loan.

Gomez, who was a member of the England Under-17 side that lifted the 2014 European Championships, said that it was a dream come true and a bit surreal, the BBC reported.

India-born ex-Google executive Nikesh Arora appointed SoftBank president

India-born former Google executive Nikesh Arora has been appointed the President of Japan’s telecommunications giant SoftBank Corp that paid the “rising star” a whopping US $135 million for the financial year 2014.

Arora, 47, who earlier held the vice president’s post, was appointed company president and chief operating officer at a general meeting of shareholders here yesterday.

In a management reshuffle last month, Arora – then investments head – was named as a potential successor to company chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son, as the telecoms conglomerate steps up its overseas expansion.

Iraqi forces kill 182 IS terrorists

Iraqi government forces backed by air power have engaged militants from the Islamic State terrorist group during various clean-up operations across the crisis-hit country and killed at least 182 extremists.

According to a statement released by the Iraqi defence ministry on Friday, a total of 124 IS militants died when Iraqi security forces, supported by military aircraft, struck the terrorist positions in the northern provinces of Kirkuk and Salahuddin as well as the troubled western province of Anbar, a report on Press TV said on Saturday.

Committee to decide on suburban trains for Bengaluru: Prabhu

A technical committee will be constituted to look into the demand for suburban train services for Bengaluru, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said here on Saturday.

Speaking at the inauguration of a new station building at Bengaluru city railway station, union Minister for Law and Justice Sadananda Gowda and union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers Ananth Kumar demanded suburban train services on the lines of Mumbai.

They highlighted the perennially increasing road traffic and difficulties faced by the people in the city.

Reliance Industries has procured the world’s most sophisticated armoured vehicle for enhanced personal security of its chairman and managing director.

The fortified Mercedes Benz is mounted on a normal S600. The RIL car has Level-9 vehicle resistance (VR9), the highest available currently. It was customised at Benz’s Sindelingen plant in Germany.

Sources said the armoured vehicle was registered at the Mumbai Central Regional Transport Office (RTO) today.

Railway ministry to send team for India-Bangla rail project

To push India-Bangla rail extension project, Railways ministry would be sending a high level team to expedite the process soon.

The decision of sending the Railway Ministry team to have a first-hand knowledge about the proposed rail project was taken at a meeting of NITI Aayog held in Delhi on June 18, said Transport Secretary Samarjit Bhowmik.

NITI Aayog in the meeting decided to implement the railway extension project from Agartala to Gangasagar (Bangladesh) by 2017.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has managed to get a stay order from a local sessions court against former Pakistan players, Sarfaraz Nawaz and Aamir Sohail from speaking against the board and former Chairman, Najam Sethi.

The legal advisor of the board, Tafazzul Rizvi said that the PCB had filed a damages and defamation suit against the two former players in the district court in Lahore.

Odisha to set up 150 new cold storages in 4 years

In a bid to raise vegetable production in the state, Odisha government has decided to set up 150 new cold storages under PPP mode by 2019.

The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik where he was reviewing performance of the Agriculture Department.

The chief minister will review the progress made in this regard every two months.

It was decided to increase farm output every year using advanced methods of cultivation, which currently stands at nine lakh tonnes of vegetables from 5,000 hectares of land.

Delhi-bound bus falls into gorge in Uttarakhand’s Almora; 15 killed, 25 injured

Fifteen persons were killed and 25 others injured when a bus, travelling from Pithoragarh to Delhi, fell into a deep gorge in Almora district this afternoon.

The Uttarakhand Roadways bus, carrying about 40 passengers, fell into a 100-ft deep gorge at Dhyari, nearly 65 kms from Almora, killing 15 persons on the spot, Kumaon DIG Pushkar Sailal said.

Twenty-five persons, who sustained injuries in the accident, have been rushed to hospital, he said, adding the accident occurred around 1 PM.

Sidelining the controversy surrounding the International Yoga Day, a group of Hindus in the Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh has observed Roza with their Muslim neighbours during the Ramzan fasting.

“As per the pre-decided programme around 70 people, including 21 Hindus, observed Roza and sat on Udal Chowk on the first day of Ramzan yesterday,” said Tara Patkar, Coordinator of Bundeli Samaj. Patkar said that around 50 Muslims people, including the president of Bundeli Samaj Haji Pavesh Mohammad, participated in the noble event and added that politicians were also invited.

The UK trade unions’ decision to suspended strike at Tata Steel plants in the country recognises the substantial shortfall in the pension fund and the need to jointly address it, the steel maker said.

On Friday, unions — Community, Unite, Ucatt and GMB — suspended the strike scheduled for June 22 after a new pension offer from Tata Steel UK, which keeps British Steel Pension Scheme (BSPS) open.
