Fake degree case: Tomar’s sent to one day judicial custody

Former Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar, who has been accused of possessing two fake degrees: a law degree and a BSC degree, was on Sunday sent to one day judicial custody.

An FIR was lodged against him under IPC Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120B for criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery.

Last week, Tomar was arrested in connection with his fake law degree. He has so far maintained that his degree is not fake and accused the Centre of hatching a conspiracy into the entire episode. (ANI)

Thundershowers likely to continue in north-western India: IMD

The director of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), B.P. Yadav, on Sunday said that thundershowers are likely to continue in north-western parts of the country.

“We had said that pre-monsoon showers will begin over parts of north-west India from 21st June and that has happened today. We have rains over Punjab, Haryana, west Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi. These are due to the strong westerly winds bringing lot of moisture over the region. We expect that these thundershowers over north, west India are likely to continue,” Yadav told ANI.

The highly acclaimed writer James Salter has died at 90.

His widow Kay Eldredge confirmed that the ‘Downhill Racer’ writer, who lived in Bridgehampton, passed away in Sag Harbor, Deadline.com reported.

The ‘ Downhill Racer’ (1969), directed by Michael Ritchie and starring Robert Redford as a member of the U.S. ski team, was his most successful film. (ANI)

Two killed, five injured in Mumbai house collapse

At least two people were killed and five others got injured when a building collapsed amid heavy rain here.

The incident occurred between 9 – 9:30 pm on Saturday night.

The house, which was situated next to a drain in Mumbai’s Bhramnagar area, collapsed apparently under the combined pressure from the rain water and water from the drainage.

“Five people have suffered injuries, they have admitted to various hospitals and their treatment is going on while two others have died.” said Police Inspector of Khar East, Shankar Bhore.

Geert Wilders, the leader of the Dutch anti-immigration Party for Freedom, has assured the country that Prophet Muhammad’s cartoons will be aired on Dutch TV, despite them not being broadcast on Saturday, as planned earlier.

He explained that due to a ‘misunderstanding’ with the network, the cartoons were not aired on the slot allocated to his party on national television and instead, an old recording about migrants was featured, reported the BBC.

The cartoons were showcased at an event in Texas, U.S. last month. It was attacked by two gunmen, who were killed by security guards.

Uber tells passengers, drivers to ride without arms or not ride at all

Uber has reportedly revised its rules to prohibit passengers and drivers from carrying firearms while using the service.

The changes published on the taxi-hailing service’s website said that Uber and its affiliates prohibit “possessing firearms of any kind in a vehicle.” It added that those found violating the rule ‘may’ lose access to the firm’s services, reported The Verge.

The company said that the move was aimed at ensuring that everyone using the digital platform felt safe and comfortable using the service. (ANI)

Days after a white gunman shot nine people dead in an African-American church in South Carolina’s Charleston area, U.S. President Barack Obama has claimed that gun violence in America is much worse in comparison to other developed nations like, France, Israel and Japan.

A tweet posted by Obama via @POTUS on Saturday said, “Here are the stats: Per population, we kill each other with guns at a rate 297x more than Japan, 49x more than France, 33x more than Israel.”

He also added, “Expressions of sympathy aren’t enough. It’s time we do something about this.”

South Carolina church set to reopen post gun attack

The historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, where nine people were shot dead by a white gunman, is set to reopen for services today.

Members of Emanuel AME church had met on Saturday in the room where the attack took place. Many more are expected to attend the service in the morning, reported the BBC.

A member who attended Saturday’s meeting said that the church will be open to all on Sunday.

Mumbai hooch tragedy: Death toll reaches 94, confirms police

The Mumbai Police on Sunday confirmed that the death toll in the spurious liquor case has risen to 94, with a further 35 people hospitalised for consuming the hooch.

“Till now, 94 people have been killed in this tragedy. Around 35 are still undergoing treatment in the hospital. Many teams have been sent to investigate the matter, to learn where the alcohol came from… preliminary reports suggest that it was coming from the Vashi and Kalyan areas of the city,” Additional Commissioner of Police F. Patil told ANI.
