Investor wealth surges Rs 1.25 lakh crore as Sensex climbs 414 points

Stock market investors became richer by over Rs 1.25 lakh crore as the share market rose sharply, with the BSE Sensex surging 414 points on Monday.

Total investor wealth of BSE-listed companies went up by Rs 1,25,286 crore to Rs 1,01,29,698 crore.

Rising for the seventh straight day, the Sensex today surged 414 points to 27,730.21 as above average monsoonreignited hopes of further easing of interest rates by the Reserve Bank.

In last seven days, the index has gained 1,359.23 points, its longest winning run since February.

Carlyle Group to invest $500 million in India-focused Magna Energy

US-based private equity firm Carlyle Group on Monday said it will invest $500 million in Magna Energy Ltd, an India-focused oil firm founded by Mike Watts, the man who saw oil in Rajasthan’s Thar desert where global giant Royal Dutch Shell saw none.

Carlyle, the second private equity fund after Warburg Pincus to have backed management team in creation of upstream firm, will fund Magna’s bit to become a full-cycle oil and gas company through acquisitions and by securing local licences in India.

The largest private sector lender ICICI Bank on Monday entered into a partnership with the largest online marketplace Alibaba.com, under which small businesses who are members of the Chinese e-commerce major can avail of faster loans.

Under the arrangement, it has created a ‘Trade Facilitation Centre’, and it will provide the entrepreneurs quick access to bank offerings including business loans, cash management solutions, foreign exchange transactions, bank guarantees and cross-border remittances.

PSU bank recapitalisation in 3 to 6 months: FM Arun Jaitley

The government will infuse capital in public sector banks in the next three to six months, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said at Citi event here.

Jaitley has earmarked Rs 7,940 crore in the Budget for recapitalisation of PSU banks during the current fiscal.

There was no casualty due to the landslide and work to clear the debris is on, officials said.

Growth rate of India’s industrial output for May is likely to be in the same range as the previous month, although with a downward bias owing to the base effect, says a Dun & Bradstreet report.

According to the research firm, although some incipient signs of revival in domestic demand are visible, overall demand, including external, continues to remain subdued.

D&B expects IIP to have grown by 3.5-4.0% during May-15.

Industrial production grew at a two-month high of 4.1% in April, primarily driven by the manufacturing sector, but capital goods growth slowed.

EU launches naval operation against migrant smugglers

The European Union has reportedly initiated a naval operation to stop human traffickers from bringing migrants across the Mediterranean to Europe in dangerous boats.

For now, the operation will be limited to international waters and airspace until the EU secured permission to enter the Libyan territory, The Washington Post reported.

Over 100,000 migrants have entered Europe so far this year, with at least 2,000 killed or missing while trying to reach the continent. Dozens of boats leave Libya each week, with Italy and Greece bearing the brunt of the surge. (ANI)

Cops escorting J-K minister assault journalist, wife

A senior journalist and his wife were assaulted on Monday by policemen escorting the cavalcade of Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Minister Ghulam Nabi Hanjura.

The journalist was travelling in his car with his wife in the Bagh-e-Mehtab area of Srinagar when the personnel thrashed and hurled abuses at them.

According to reports, the personnel punched the journalist and misbehaved with his wife, despite him proving his identity.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Monday said that he was not aware of any meeting between Lalit Modi and ex-Mumbai top cop Rakesh Maria.

“All I will say is that I did not know about this meeting, nor was I informed after the meeting took place. Let the Chief Minister [Devendra Fadnavis] look into it. I do not want to say anything in

this regard,” Chavan told ANI.
