Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) delivered his last sermon (Khutbah) on the ninth of Dhul Hijjah (12th and last month of the Islamic year), 10 years after Hijrah (migration from Makkah to Madinah) in the Uranah Valley of mount Arafat. His words were quite clear and concise and were directed to the entire humanity.
After praising, and thanking Allah he said:
To zabh (slaughter) a specific animal in the days of Nahr is Qurbani.
The Qurbani is the sunnat of Sayeduna Ibrahim (Alaihis Salaam). Muslims were told to do Qurbani, Allah Tabaraka wa Ta’la says: 110:2
*”Therefore offer prayer for your Lord, and do the sacrifice.”* (Quran 110:2)
*Ahadith:*
*Hadith 1:*
Sayeduna Zaid bin Arqam (Radi Allahu anhu) narrates the Sahabae Kiram asked the Beloved Prophet (Swall Allahu alaihi wasallam), “Ya Rasool Allah, what is Qurabani?”
He (Swall Allahu alaihi wasallam) said, “This is the Sunnat of your father Ibraheem (Alahis Salaam).”
Allah swore by the day of Arafat, which points to its greatness. Allah said:
*”And [by] the promised Day. And [by] the witness and what is witnessed.”*
(The Holy Quran, Surah 85. “The Mansions Of The Stars, Constellations”, verses 2-3)
The Messenger of Allah (Sallellahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The promised day is the Day of Resurrection, the witnessed day is the Day of Arafat, and the witnessing day is Friday.” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi]

*On the day of Arafat Allah frees His servants from hell and forgive them their sins*

It is Sunnah to fast on the ninth day of Dhu’l-Hijjah, because the Prophet (Sallellahu alaihi wa sallam) urged us to do good deeds during this time, and fasting is one of the best of deeds. Allaah has chosen fasting for Himself, as is stated in the “hadeeth qudsi”: “Allaah says: ‘All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except for fasting, which is for Me and I am the One Who will reward him for it.’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 1805).
Fasting on this day is an expiation for two years:

Over time we have lost so many of the beautiful traditions of Islam. One of them includes the Hajj Caravans. The most famous of these are from Cairo and from Damascus. There are many fascinating stories about these caravans and travels, suspense and danger, from the time of Ibn Battuta
, to the Hajj railroad, until even the steamship age of Hajj in the earlier part of the 20th century.

Question: How do the first ten days of the Month of Dhul Hijjah differ from other days of the year?
Praise be to Allaah Who has created Time and has made some times better than others, some months and days and nights better than others, when rewards are multiplied many times, as a mercy towards His slaves. This encourages them to do more righteous deeds and makes them more eager to worship Him, so that the Muslim renews his efforts to gain a greater share of reward, prepare himself for death and supply himself in readiness for the Day of Judgement.
This story about “Istighfar” is from the life of Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal (R.al), who is considered as a renowned scholar of Islam and a famous theologian.
During his old age, while Imam Ahmed (R.al) was travelling he stopped by a town. After the prayers, he wanted to stay for the night in the masjid yard because he didn’t know anyone in the town. Owing to his humility, he hadn’t introduced himself to anyone thinking that if he did, he would be welcomed by many people.
