10 killed in Russia bus explosion

At least 10 people were killed and 10 were injured early Monday when an explosion hit a trolley bus in Russia’s Volgograd city, the second fatal blast within two days.

Russian Investigation Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said the explosion could also be a terror attack, resembling the Sunday blast at the city’s railway station that left at least 16 dead and more than 40 injured.

A criminal case under the act of terrorism and illegal turnover of explosives has been opened.

Indians threatened in Bahrain asked to approach authorities

Indian workers who face threats from their employers in Bahrain should immediately approach the authorities, India’s ambassador to Bahrain Mohan Kumar has said.

“If there is any explicit threat a person faces, they should visit the nearest police station and inform the embassy,” the Gulf Daily News quoted the ambassador as saying.

“They should not accept any bodily threats,” he said Friday during the monthly Open House.

An Indian worker had complained about being threatened by his employer after asking for his passport.

Big B in Hollywood adaptation of ‘Six Suspects’ ?

After making his Hollywood debut with Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby”, megastar Amitabh Bachchan has reportedly been approached for another international project which is likely to be an adaptation of author Vikas Swaroop’s “Six Suspects”.

Sussanne Roshan Saturday denied a media reports saying her divorce from Hindi movie star Hrithik Roshan is a Rs.100 crore settlement and said that its unethical to publish such false news.

“I was deeply disappointed when I read today’s article titled ‘Sussanne and Hrithik Roshan divorce: Rs. 100 crore settlement? There is no element of truth in the news and it is entirely speculative,” she said in a statement.

Farooque Sheikh dead, Bollywood mourns loss

Rs.2 lakh relief to kin of man who died of AIDS

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has directed a life insurance company to pay Rs.2 lakh to the kin of an army man who died of AIDS (Acquired Immunity Deficiency Syndrome).

The commission was hearing a revision petition filed by Postal Life Insurance (PLI) challenging the order of the state commission of Haryana, which has granted Rs.2 lakh to the kin of army official Manjeet Singh, a Haryana resident who died after being infected with the human immunodeficiency (HIV) virus that causes a patient to contract AIDS.

PM may address press conference in January

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to address a press conference in early January, informed sources said Saturday.

They said the press conference was likely to be held in the first week of January but the venue and date are not finalised.

The sources said it would be Manmohan Singh’s second press conference during his second term as the prime minister though he has separately met groups of editors and TV editors.

Manmohan Singh is expected to address a wide array of questions related to performance of the United Progressive Alliance government.

Acupuncture boon for breast cancer patients

There’s good news for breast cancer patients suffering from side-effects of estrogen-lowering cancer drugs.

Scientists have now found that acupuncture is effective in reducing menopausal symptoms in women being treated with aromatase inhibitors – that lower levels of both circulating and intra-tumoural estrogens – for breast cancer.

The randomised trial revealed that even sham acupuncture is also effective in easing side effects of cancer drugs, said a paper published in the journal Cancer.

Fourth major train disaster in Andhra Pradesh in two years

Saturday’s train blaze in Anantapur district is the fourth major disaster in Andhra Pradesh in less than two years.

At least 26 passengers were killed and 15 injured as a coach of the Bangalore-Nanded Express caught fire near Kothacheruvu railway station in Anantapur district, bordering Karnataka, in the early hours of Saturday.

As many as 35 people were killed and 25 were injured when a coach of the New Delhi-Chennai Superfast Express train caught fire near Nellore railway station on July 30 last year.

Kejriwal’s metro ride to power

Rs.5 lakh ex-gratia for Andhra train fire victims

Railway Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge has announced ex-gratia payment of Rs.5 lakh to the kin of those killed in a fire in the coaches of Bangalore-Nanded Express early Saturday.

At least 26 passengers, including two children, were killed when two coaches of the express train from Bangalore caught fire near Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh, about 150 km from here, a railway official said.

The ill-fated train left Bangalore late Friday at 10.45 p.m. for an overnight journey to Nanded in Maharashtra, about 830 km from here.(IANS)
