All flyovers in Hyderabad to be shut for New Year’s Eve

Police have decided to close all flyovers and some key roads around Hussain Sagar in Hyderabad from Tuesday night till the early hours of Wednesday to prevent any untoward incident during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

All flyovers in Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerates will be shut while the roads around Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of Hyderabad will also be out of bounds for traffic.

The PVN Expressway, which connects the city to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, will also be closed for vehicles.

South Africa won Test by 10 wickets

India stared at a series defeat as South Africa won by 10 wickets in hand in the second and final cricket Test at Kingsmead here Monday.

Earlier, India were bowled out for 223 in the post-lunch session — Ajinkya Rahane top scoring a career best of 96 — leaving South Africa needing 58 runs to win the match and the series.

Skipper Graeme Smith (27 not out) and Alviro Petersen (31 not out) were at the crease.

Modi will now seek wife, says Jharkhand minister

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, now seeking iron scrap from the people for the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue, will one day seek a wife from the common people, a Jharkhand minister said Monday, creating a political row.

“Earlier, the BJP were seeking bricks (to build the temple in Ayodhya). Now Modi is seeking iron (for the Patel statue). Later, he will seek gold, and a time will come when he will seek a wife from the people. Modi is a ‘bewa’ (widower),” Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Minister Mannan Mallik told reporters in Dhanbad.

Ensure free 700 litres water for all Delhiites: Congress

Shortly after the Delhi government announced provision of 700 litres of free water per day to every household with a water connection, the Congress Monday questioned the move and said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should ensure that every citizen gets the facility.

“He had promised that all citizens of Delhi would get free water. But around 50 percent of Delhi does not get water at all. He should ensure that every citizen of Delhi gets free 700 litres of water per day,” Congress spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit told reporters.

Invited by Sharif to visit Pakistan, says Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday said that Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief has invited her to visit his country.

In a post on her Facebook page after receiving outgoing Pakistan High Commissioner Salman Bashir in her office, Banerjee said he “has conveyed to me the invitation of the prime minister of Pakistan to visit their country at a convenient time”.

Bashir met Banerjee for about an hour along with his wife and two diplomats from the High Commission.

Permits for Delhi autos to travel to Gurgaon, Noida

The Delhi government Monday decided to issue 5,500 inter-state permits for auto-rickshaws to travel within the National Capital Region territory.

This was announced by new Transport Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj here after a meeting.

The permits will allow autos to travel from Delhi to Gurgaon in Haryana, and from Delhi to Noida in Uttar Pradesh, and back.

“This will be implemented soon,” the minister said.(IANS)

700 litres free water daily for Delhi households

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) would provide 700 litres of free water per day to each and every household which has a regular water connection, a board member Monday said.

The decision was taken after a meeting held at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence here which was attended by 18 members of the DJB.

“Seven hundred litres of water will be given to each and every household of Delhi, who have regular connections,” DJB member Sandeep Tanwar said adding that even if one point more than 700 litres is consumed, the household would need to pay the entire bill.

Deepika to announce two new projects around birthday

The New Year is yet to set in but for Deepika Padukone it already seems to be turning out well. The actress, who gave four back-to-back hits in 2013, is likely to announce two more projects around her 28th birthday.

She currently has three films – “Happy New Year”, “Finding Fanny” and Imtiaz Ali’s next, to look forward to next year.

“Deepika will be having special announcements around her birthday (Jan 5),” said a source close to the actress.

FIPB approves Vodafone plan to fully own India business

The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) Monday approved a proposal of British telecom major Vodafone Group Plc to increase its stake to 100 percent in the Indian holding with an investment of around Rs.10,141 crore ($1.7 billion).

Vodafone would now need final approval from the cabinet.

Vodafone entered India in 2007 by buying Hutchison Whampoa’s assets in a $11 billion deal. It directly owns 64.38 percent in its India unit.

I would love to do movies: Britney Spears

Pop star Britney Spears is open to acting in films provided she gets the right part.

The 32-year-old said that she is waiting for the right roles and also added that she loves comedy films, reports contactmusic.com.

“I would love to do movies. If it was the right part, it would be really cool. I love funny movies,” E! News quoted Spears as saying.

The singer last appeared in 2002 film “Crossroads” where she played Lucy Wagner. The film also starred Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning.

Debunking earlier researches, a new study has found that women are more than twice as likely as men to pass on the human papilloma virus (HPV) – the primary cause for the development of cervical cancer.

Researchers found that 18 percent of women infected with HPV transmitted the virus to their male partners within a year, compared with the 7 percent of infected men who passed on the virus to their female partners.

Delhi to give Rs.1 crore to killed constable’s family

The Delhi government Monday announced Rs. 1 crore compensation to the family of the 48-year-old excise department constable, who died after being attacked by bootleggers two days ago.

The decision was taken at a meeting between Excise Commissioner A.K. Singh and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Constable Vinod Kumar succumbed to his injuries in a hospital after being beaten by a group of bootleggers Dec 27 night in a jungle in Ghitorni village near Vasant Kunj area of south Delhi.

Online shopping rises 85 percent in 2013: Survey

Online shopping has risen by a whopping 85 percent in 2013 as compared to last year’s figure of $8.5 billion on increasing Internet penetration, rising fuel prices and wider choices in the comfort of one’s home, a report revealed Monday.

“Online Shopping – Review & Outlook in 2013,” released by industry chamber Assocham showed that India’s e-commerce market rose from about $2.5 billion in 2009 to $6.3 billion in 2011, $8.5 billion in 2012 and further to $16 billion in 2013.

It is expected to touch $56 billion by 2023– 6.5 percent of the total retail market.

Media boycotts Delhi government press briefing

Upset at not being allowed entry to the Delhi Secretariat, journalists Monday boycotted a press conference by new Health Minister Satyendra Jain, who was to brief them on health issues before the Aam Aadmi Party government.

Newsmen were taken aback when they were denied entry into the secretariat complex – which they are normally allowed. They were instead asked to wait in the designated media room.

When Jain arrived for the media conference, two-and-half hours later than scheduled, angry reporters, especially from the electronic media, refused to broadcast the event.

Education is daily growth: Poonam Dhillon

Actress Poonam Dhillon, who plays an illiterate person in her new TV show, says education is not limited to a certain age or class and describes it as a daily growth that helps one become a complete person.

Her show is titled “Ekk Nayi Pehchaan” and it shows how she learns to read and write from her daughter-in-law.

“Education is a daily growth. It’s not about the degrees but about the kind of person it makes one. I feel it makes a human being complete,” Poonam told IANS in a telephonic interview.

Two minor explosions in Bihar, rail services disrupted

Train services were disrupted after two low-intensity bombs exploded near a railway track in Bihar’s Katihar district Monday morning, police said, adding that two live bombs had also been recovered near the site.

“Two low intensity bombs exploded near the railway track between Azamnagar and Makuria stations, disrupting rail services,” Superintendent of Police (Rail) Rajeev Mishra said.

Schumacher in coma

F1 world champion Michael Schumacher was in “coma” after a skiing accident Sunday in the Alps in France, a media report said.

The 44-year-old German F1 world champion suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and was in a “severe head coma” when he was transferred to University Hospital Center of Grenoble in France, reported channel BFM citing RMC Sport.

The hospital said in a statement that Schumacher “required an immediate neurosurgical operation”, Xinhua reported Monday citing the media report.

Armaan my best friend: Tanisha

Actress Tanisha Mukherjee, whose proximity with Armaan Kohli during their stay in the “Bigg Boss” house hogged headlines, has dismissed any romantic talk by saying that he is her “best friend”.

The grand finale of “Bigg Boss – Saath 7” was aired on Colors Dec 28.

At a post finale press conference, Tanisha was questioned about her relationship with Armaan and she became visibly angry.

A rare soft-tissue cancer may be eradicated simply by inhibiting a key protein involved in its growth, research suggests.
