Six killed in battles as Burundi awaits vote results

At least six people including a policeman were killed today in the latest violence in Burundi, as it awaits results from elections boycotted by the opposition and condemned internationally.

Clashes broke out in the capital Bujumbura’s Cibitoke district, an opposition area that has been one of the heartlands of protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s defiant bid for a third term.

While police said the deaths followed gunbattles with an “armed group”, witnesses said the police staged summary executions after being attacked.

Tunisia begins security drive after beach massacre

Tunisia said it started deploying armed police around tourist sites today after last week’s massacre at a beach resort, as authorities finished identifying all 38 foreigners killed in the jihadist attack.

A British military plane carrying home eight bodies of its nationals killed in the assault arrived in Britain, as Tunisia’s health ministry confirmed that 30 Britons were among the dead.

UN: At least 1,466 Iraqis killed in June due to violence

At least 1,466 Iraqis were killed by armed conflict in June, up more than 40 per cent from the previous month as security forces suffered mounting casualties battling the Islamic State group, according to UN figures released today.

The monthly death toll was the highest since last September, and the rise from last month appeared to be almost entirely due to higher casualties among security forces. Some 800 Iraqi security forces and pro-government militiamen were killed in June, more than twice the 366 killed in May, according to the UN.

Over 12 booked for torching gate of religious place

About a dozen persons were today booked for torching the main gate of a religious place.

“Some unidentified miscreants burned down the main wooden gate of a religious place in Haiderganj area of Faizabad City Kotwali police station area,” said CO City Yamuna Prasad.

“There was the conspiracy to flare up communal riot through the incident but we tackled the situation,” he said.

The police are investigating the matter and soon we will nab the real culprits, he added.

Bangladesh-based poverty group founder wins World Food Prize

A man who created a Bangladesh- based nonprofit organisation credited with helping more than 150 million people out of poverty was named the winner of the 2015 World Food Prize today.

Fazle Hasan Abed created BRAC, originally known as Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee, as a temporary relief organization to help with recovery from the 1970 typhoon that killed about 500,000 people and the subsequent war fought in 1971 to win independence from Pakistan.

Bangladesh was once listed as the second poorest country in the world.

Confidential UN report positive on Iran nuclear commitments

Iran has met its commitments under a preliminary nuclear deal setting up the current talks on a final agreement, leaving it with several tons less of the material it could use to make weapons, according to a U.N. report issued today.

The report said more than four tons of the enriched uranium had been fed into a pipeline that ends with conversion of it into oxide, which is much less likely to be used to make nuclear arms.

3 injured in stone pelting in Ballabgarh

Minor incident of stone pelting was today reported in sensitive Atali village of Ballabgarh town.

However, the situation was brought under control with the intervention of elders and district administration officials, police said.

Atali village witnessed large scale communal violence in May, as scores of families of the minority community were forced to flee the village and take shelter in police station. Several houses of the minority community and a mosque, which was at the centre of the row, were set ablaze.

EU hails ‘historic’ restoration of US-Cuba ties

The EU today welcomed the re-establishment of full diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba after 54 years, calling it a “historic milestone”.

But the European Union also urged further work to lift a trade embargo established in 1962 which remains in place, calling it “outdated and inconsistent”.

US President Barack Obama has also urged Republican-controlled Congress to end the embargo, saying the policy “was not working”.

Upset over apathetic attitude of Electricity Department, a farmer couple consumed poison in its office near here today and is now battling for life in a hospital, police and hospital sources said.

Dilip Tayde and his wife Radha consumed poisonous substance in the electricity office premises near village Nimba Fata this afternoon, police sources said.

They were immediately shifted to Civil Hospital, where sources said the duo is battling for life.

Oregon latest US state to legalise recreational pot

Oregon today became the fourth US state to allow the recreational use of marijuana, amid a growing legalisation trend in the western United States.

The changes in the northwestern state’s law come after voters in November approved a ballot measure making it legal to smoke, grow and own pot, though the drug remains illegal under federal law.

From now on, people in Oregon aged 21 and up can legally use marijuana for recreational purposes and grow up to four plants.

Actress Supriya Pathak says wedding preparations of her star son Shahid Kapoor are going on in full swing.

“Lots of things happening….It is like a normal wedding house I suppose,” Pathak told reporters here at an event.

Shahid is getting married on July 7 to Delhi-based Mira Rajput. The wedding will take place in Delhi and later the ‘Haider’ actor will host a reception in Mumbai for his B-town friends and colleagues.

Uber hits roadblocks in Brazil’s biggest city and capital

The Uber ride-sharing service is facing roadblocks in Brazil.

The Sao Paulo city council voted 48-1 late yesterday to prohibit the use of smartphone-based ride-sharing applications like Uber in the city of 12 million. And the city council of the capital city of Brasilia also approved such a ban.

The Sao Paulo measure still needs another vote and then the approval of Mayor Fernando Haddad before taking effect. In Brasilia, the measure goes straight to federal district Gov. Rodrigo Rollemberg for his approval.

UNESCO chief warns about jihadist ‘culture cleansing’

The head of the UN cultural organisation today called for a campaign against the “culture cleansing” being carried out by Islamic State jihadists.

“Extremists don’t destroy heritage as a collateral damage, they target it systematically to strike societies at their core,” Irina Bokova said in a speech at the Chatham House think tank in London.

“This strategy seeks to destroy identities by eliminating heritage and cultural markers,” she said.

Trafficker jailed for 18 years over Italy boat disaster

A Tunisian people smuggler who survived one of the worst migrant boat disasters in the Mediterranean was given an 18-year jail sentence today.

A court in Agrigento, Sicily found Khaled Bensalem, 36, guilty of trafficking and of having contributed to the ship catching fire and capsizing just off the outlying Italian island of Lampedusa in October 2013.

Union Minister “delays” Air India flight, 3 “offloaded” to

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju was at the centre of a controversy for delaying an Air India flight from Leh to Delhi for about an hour and for the offloading of three of its passengers, including a child, allegedly to accommodate him and his aide.

According to sources, the aircraft doors were shut for takeoff on June 24 but the flight did not depart at its scheduled time as Rijuju, along ith his PA, had to be onboard.

When he arrived, three passengers were allegedly deboarded to accommodate the minister and his PA, sources said.

Check-in baggage charges: Raju differs with Sharma

In apparent signs of differences with his junior colleague Mahesh Sharma, Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju today said decision on a proposal to charge passengers for check-in baggage should be left to aviation regulator DGCA.

Constable arrested for allegedly molesting woman

A Constable has been arrested for allegedly molesting a young woman in full public view and stalking her, police said today.

Chandrakant Balkrishna Tupe, attached to Thane city police, has been charged under IPC sections related to outraging the modesty of a woman and criminal intimidation, police said in a release here.

According to a complaint lodged by the woman, the 32- year-old policeman followed her at a bridge where she was waiting to catch a bus to return home at about 7.30 last evening.

Charges are politically motivated, says Pankaja Munde

Terming as a “scam of words” the charges against her, Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde, under fire for alleged irregularities in purchase of items worth Rs 206 crore, today said that similar items were procured at a higher price during the previous Congress-NCP rule.

“The earlier Congress-led regime purchased such items at a cost of Rs 408 crore during its tenure. You call that a purchase and term the procurement made by us a scam,” Munde told reporters here.

A woman suspiciously died after falling from height in Kukatpally area. According to Kukatpally Housing Board Police, 35-year-old Vedaiah, W/O Shankar Chari, R/O Nizampet area suspiciously fell from 4th floor of a building. She died on the spot. PHB police is investigating the case.
