Rahul attacks Centre, Delhi govt over sanitation workers issue

Reaching out to striking sanitation workers in the city, Rahul Gandhi today launched a scathing attack on the Centre and Delhi Government for “failing to deliver” on their “tall promises” and accused them of passing the buck on each other.

Joining a dharna by workers who are on strike since June 2 over non-payment of salaries, the Congress Vice President assured them that they were now his “responsibility”.

Exam irregularities: SC reserves verdict on re-conduct of AIPMT

The Supreme Court today reserved its verdict on petitions seeking re-conduct of All India Pre-Medical Test 2015 for alleged large-scale irregularities in the examination held on May 3.

A vacation bench comprising justices R K Agarwal and Amitabha Roy said that it will shortly pronounce judgement and asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) not to declare the AIPMT results till then.

During the hearing, the bench said, “The examination stands vitiated even if one student is being benefited illegally.

Funds to be released today itself for sanitation workers: Jung

On a day Rahul Gandhi mounted attack on the Centre and Delhi government over non-payment of salaries to municipal sanitation workers, Lt Governor Najeeb Jung announced that Rs 493 crore would be released to the civic bodies today itself to cover the dues.

Amid worsening garbage crisis in East Delhi due to agitation by sanitation workers since June 2, mayors of three BJP-ruled municipal bodies called on Jung here and requested his intervention after which he said Delhi government has already decided to release the funds.

The tender approved for Urdu programmes held during Jashn-e-Telangana functions has created discord among Minority Welfare officials. It is said that high officials of Minority Welfare were not happy from the way in which the tender was approved. This is the reason that it created discord among some key officers.

Minority Welfare had finalised 11 programmes in connection with Jashn-e-Telangana, of which 9 were related to Urdu. Tenders were invited for stage and other arrangements for all those programmes.

In a case that could give a thriller a run for its money, the city police investing the death of a septuagenarian in a fire in his home today stumbled on a man living with the skeletons of his elder sister and two pet dogs for the past six months.

The police investigating a fire on the second floor of 3, Robinson Street in the heart of the city had found the charred body of 77-year-old Arabindo De, the owner of the house, from inside a bathroom last night.

Arnab Goswami has been elevated as President-News and Editor-in-Chief of both Times Now and ET Now, the Times Network today said it.

Delhi: No hike in excise duty, but minor increase in licence

In good news for tipplers in Delhi, the AAP government has decided not to hike the excise duty for the current financial year.

The decision was taken today at a Cabinet meeting presided by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal during which a new excise policy was also approved containing several new points, including one prescribing a minor increase in licence fees.

“The government has decided not to increase the excise duty this year as it was enhanced substantially in the last two financial years,” said a senior official.

Pension watchdog eyes APY to boost NPS corpus by Rs 50K cr

Pension fund regulator PFRDA is hopeful of increasing the corpus of New Pension System (NPS) by Rs 40,000-50,000 crore by the fiscal-end, driven by subscription to a newly launched social security scheme.

The Centre has launched Atal Pension Yojana (APY) targeted at people in the unorganised sector who wish to join NPS and are not a member of any other social security plan.

Assets under management (AUM) of NPS currently stands at around Rs 89,000 crore. The NPS corpus grew by 38 per cent over 2013-14 to around Rs 25,000 crore in 2014-15.

Saudi Arabia today condemned foreign criticism of a 1,000-lash sentence that the kingdom’s highest court upheld against a blogger, rejecting “interference” in its internal affairs.

The kingdom “has expressed strong disbelief and condemnation” at statements about the case of Raif Badawi, the Saudi Press Agency said, citing an official source at the foreign ministry.

Rights groups fear he could be flogged again as soon as tomorrow, despite appeals from the United States, European Union and France for his sentence to be rescinded.

A third of allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse by UN personnel involve a minor under 18, according to the report by the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) obtained by AFP today.

GMR Infrastructure today said that the Civil Aviation Ministry has directed the airport tariff regulator AERA to adopt a Hybrid Till with 30 per cent cross subsidisation for the tariff determination of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL).

Under the hybrid till model, the airport operator adds a part of the non-aeronautical (duty-free shops, hotel, restaurant, among others) revenue and the total revenue from the aeronautical (landing, parking and ground handling charges) side to compile total earnings.

Jet Airways former executive director Saroj Datta passed away in Mumbai yesterday.

The airline’s chairman Naresh Goyal today condoled his death saying he was a doyen of the aviation industry with his unmatched knowledge and understanding.

“Saroj was the founding member of Jet Airways and his vision and commitment helped Jet Airways grow and become India’s premier international airline,” Goyal said in a statement.

“I, along with my family and all employees of Jet Airways express our heartfelt grief on his demise. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.

Media person kills self in Ghaziabad

A 26-year-old media person committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his Nyaykhand area flat, police said today.

The deceased has been identified as Aman Khanduri. He used to work as a video editor with a news channel. Aman’s family said that last night he went to his room after having dinner, they said.

In the morning, family members entered his room and discovered his body, said Deputy SP Atul Yadav.

No suicide note has been recovered from the spot.
