A mob today pelted stones at a police jeep when the cops tried to lift a road blockade on NH 60 at Karikhya village in Birbhum district.

A top district police officer said villagers blocked the arterial road demanding better traffic management after two local youths escaped from being knocked down by a speeding vehicle in the area, which is on the outskirts of the district headquarters town of Suri.

As a police force, consisting of the local police station officers, went to the spot and reasoned with the villagers they agreed to lift the hour-long blockade.

Yemen rebels head to Geneva talks as forces gain ground

A delegation of Yemeni rebels headed today for UN-sponsored peace talks in Geneva as their forces gained ground by seizing a provincial capital near the border with Saudi Arabia.

After repeatedly delaying their departure, the delegation left from the capital Sanaa aboard a UN plane for the Swiss city, where the talks are due to start tomorrow, a day late.

The UN’s peace envoy for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, said in a statement that Monday would see the start of “preliminary inclusive consultations” bringing together the country’s warring factions for the first time.

Niger: 18 migrants found dead in Sahara desert

The bodies of 18 migrants who likely died of dehydration have been found in the Sahara desert in northern Niger, the International Organization for Migration said today.

The migrants, most of whom came from West African countries, are believed to have died on June 3 after a sandstorm threw them off their route from the northern town of Arlit to Algeria, said Giuseppe Loprete, the IOM’s chief of mission in Niger.

They were part of a wave of migrants trying to reach Libya to board smugglers’ boats across the Mediterranean Sea into Europe.

Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma today criticised the NDA government and called its ministers “immature” for taking credit in the operation conducted by Indian army in Myanmar.

Former Union minister said that the statements not only cause unavoidable embarrassment to a friendly country but also exposed the immature acts of the ministers to claim credit.

The situation turned so sensitive that Myanmar government had to deny Indian security forces entering their territory, he said while addressing a press conference here today.

2 killed in bus accident in WB

At least two persons were killed and 26 others were injured when the bus in which they were travelling fell into a ditch at Monteswar in West Bengal’s Burdwan district today.

The Burdwan-Nabadwip private bus fell into the ditch this evening, filled with rain water, as the driver lost control due to heavy rains and darkness, a senior police officer said

As the locals immediately started rescue operations the passengers were brought out but two of them were already dead, police said.

Police personnel soon joined the locals but by that time the rescue was in full swing.

Actor Asa Butterfield is out of contention for the titular role in upcoming “Spider-Man” film, reportedly leaving Tom Holland, Charlie Plummer and Matthew Lintz in the race.

The couple got married on Friday, Reeves’ representative said, reported People magazine.

Burglars target newly constructed house, decamps with 600 gm

Gold jewellery weighing around 600 gm as well as Rs 40,000 in cash were stolen from a house at Kailashnagar area under Gajuwaka police station limits today morning, police official said.

However, the police is not sure whether it is burglary or the handiwork of people known to the house owner, the police official said.

Gajuwaka (Crime Branch) police inspector P Koteswara Rao said that a retired employee of the endowments department A Babu Rao built a new two-storied house in the Kailashnagar area, where he and his family, including his sons stayed.

DJB constructing Rs 127 cr sewage pumping station in east Del

To improve the sewer system of a number of colonies in East Delhi, a sewage pumping station at a cost of Rs 127 crore is being built by Delhi Jal Board (DJB).

The pumping station, having a capacity of 53.5 million gallons per day (MGD), would benefit the colonies on both the sides of Vikas Marg in east Delhi, DJB today said.

The civic body also said that it recently commissioned a 7.5 km-long sewage line, of 1,200 mm diameter, connecting the Preet Vihar sewage pumping station (SPS) to the Kondli sewage treatment plant (STP).

Lorry driver arrested for transporting ganja

Driver of a container lorry was today arrested for allegedly acting as a carrier in the smuggling of 400 kg of ganja worth about Rs 40 lakh to Sri Lanka from this district, police said.

28-year-old R Nagaraj of Tiruvallur district was arrested when he was returning after allegedly handing over the narcotic to a smuggler who managed to send it to Sri Lanka by a fibre-glass boat from Chinnamayakulam Mangaleswari Nagar sea coast near Thiruppullani, they said.

The worth of the drug was Rs. 40 lakh in the domestic illegal market, police said.

SIT for closure of 2 illegal mining cases involving ex-Goa CM

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Goa Police probing cases of illegal mining in the state, has recommended closure of two of the fifteen such cases for “lack of evidence”.

In both the cases, former Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat was accused of shielding illegal mining during his term.

“We have sent a closure report of two cases. Details cannot be made available to you right now,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (SIT) Sunita Sawant said today.

The Crime Branch, which had initially filed an FIR in connection with these cases, had handed over the probe to the SIT.

Samples of female skeleton, which was found from Robinson Street ‘horror’ house here whose septuagenarian owner allegedly committed suicide, have been sent for DNA testing, police said today.

The skeleton of 50-year-old Debjani De was recovered along with two skeletons of dogs during a probe after her father and house owner Arabindo De allegedly set himself on fire in his bathroom after bolting it from inside on Wednesday night.

3 college girls injured in amusement park ride mishap

Three college girls were today injured while riding a water slide at an amusement park here today.

The three girls, who tripped from the ride, were rushed to Capital Hospital and the critically injured one put on Oxygen support, police said.

The girls, students of Ramadevi Women’s College here, went to the Park on the occasion of Raja festival holiday.

They hailed from Niladri Vihar area in the city.

8 women held on charge of trafficking of children for begging

The Government Railway Police (GRP) today arrested eight women on charge of kidnapping children and forcing them into begging in the city.

The accused women hailing from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were identified as K Basanta, R Manjula, Jai Amma, Uppama, Venkata Amma, Shyanta Amma, Munni Amma and Sushila, A GRP official said.

GRP personnel also rescued five children who were allegedly engaged in begging during the operation, the official said.

Gang involved in blackmailing rich people, busted

Five members of a gang, including a woman, which used to befriend rich people and demand money threatening to register false rape cases against them, have been arrested, police said.

A complaint was filed yesterday, following which the members of the gang — a woman and four men were arrested today, police said.

Rs 5.70 lakh cash, a revolver, live cartridges, some important documents, and a fake police identity card were recovered from them, they said.

Jeev plays well but ends tied 22nd

Jeev Milkha played aggressively with four birdies in the first seven holes to finish 22nd on the final day of the Lyoness Open today.

Jeev seemed in sight of a top 10 finish when he had a mid-round lapse with three birdies.

However, the four-time European tour winner added one more birdie to retrieve some ground but it was only good enough for a tied 22nd place.

It was a week when Jeev looked far better than he has been in recent times and he must be ruing his triple bogey on second day and double on the third day or else a top 10 finish was his for taking.

Decrying the use of money to lure voters in elections, former Union minister P Chidambaram today said it has brought “disgrace” to Tamil Nadu and asked people to take a vow not to accept cash for votes.

“Disbursement of cash for votes has brought disgrace to Tamil Nadu all over the country where people ask how much money will you get for the next election, Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 (per vote),” the senior Congress leader said.

Man killed by brother, friends in Faridabad

A 35-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by his brother and two friends over family issues here, police said today.

The incident took place on Friday night at Piyala village in the district when the victim Pratap was taking alcohol with his brother Sunder and two of their friends Bharatpal and Rakesh, they said.

Subsequently, the brothers entered into an altercation following which Sunder attacked Pratap with a knife and two other friends Bharatpal and Rakesh also started to hit him with some hard object leading to Pratap’s death, police said.
