IEA warns of 4.3C temperature jump from climate change

The International Energy Agency on today warned temperatures could jump by as much as 4.3 degrees Celsius by the end of the century and urged countries to improve their pledges on reducing emissions.

In a report ahead of a climate change conference in Paris this year, the IEA said more should be done to reach the goal of keeping the increase in average global temperature below 2C (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

Farmer commits suicide due to revenue official’s harassment

A farmer died while trying to commit suicide today in the Nandalur mandal of the district due to four years of alleged harassment by revenue officials for issuing him a ‘pattadar’ passbook.

According to his relatives and villagers of Nagireddypalli, Syed Mohammed Maqbool Basha (45) and his brother possess five acres of land for which his brother managed to obtain a ‘pattadar’ passbook from revenue officials.

685 kg of ganja seized in Tamil Nadu

Coast Guard personnel today seized 685 kg of ganja, which was found abandoned at the fourth sand dune in the sea off Danushkodi coast.

Police said the narcotic was meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka.

The contraband was handed over to the Mandapam Marine police, they added.

3 killed as roof of school collapses

Three workers, including two women, were killed and as many injured when the under construction concrete roof of a private school at a village in this district collapsed, police said today.

The roof of the building, spreading across 6,000 square feet, was being built at Vengalam village when it collapsed late last night, they said.

The roof collapsed when the workers took shelter under it due to heavy rain, police said.

The injured workers have been hospitalised.

An all-girls school in the UK has banned senior students from wearing short skirts, instructing them to wear “sober” suits and minimal makeup in bid to keep the pupils “committed to learning”.

St Margaret’s School, a 28,500 pounds-a-year boarding school in Bushey, Hertfordshire, has banned A-level students from wearing short skirts.

Rose Hardy, headmistress of the school, has insisted on a strict new dress code of “sober” suits and minimal makeup because, she says, “a smart presentation reflects a professional and focused attitude”.

Dhawan, Vijay rise, Kohli slips in ICC Test rankings

Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay achieved career-best positions but skipper Virat Kohli dropped out of the ICC rankings’ top-10 after the drawn one-off cricket Test against Bangladesh in Fatullah.

Vijay has moved up three places to 20th, while Dhawan has vaulted 15 places to 45th. Ajinkya Rahane is the other notable mover and despite missing out on a century, he has climbed up four places to a career-high 22nd to date, the ICC said in a statement.
However, Kohli has slipped a rung to 11th.

1 Ukraine soldier killed, 21 hurt in clashes with separatists

Ukraine’s military today said escalating clashes between government forces and pro-Russian insurgents in the separatist east left one Ukrainian soldier dead and 21 injured.

A top military adviser for Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the fighting had intensified around the rebel-held airport of the insurgents’ de facto capital Donetsk.

“The past day of combat (in the war zone) saw one Ukrainian serviceman die and 21 being injured,” Oleksandr Motuzyanyk told reporters.

12 dead as tigers and lions roam Tbilisi after floods

Lions, tigers and even a hippopotamus escaped from a zoo in the Georgian capital Tbilisi today, adding to chaos caused by flooding that killed at least 12 people, officials said.

Police and soldiers were hunting down the animals, recapturing some and shooting others dead, while rescuers airlifted scores of people trapped by the floods.

Indians finish second in men’s freestyle and women’s Wrestling

India today bagged four medals, including a gold, on the final day to finish runners-up in both men’s freestyle and women’s wrestling competitions of the Asian Cadet Championship here.

Although Indian men’s freestyle team failed to defend their title, which they bagged last time in Pune, it was overall an impressive show by the host wrestlers.

Iran secured the top spot in men’s freestyle with 77 points, while India could earn 74 points for a second-place finish. Uzbekistan settled for the third position with 59 points.

Two arrested with fake currency in Jammu

Two persons were arrested in Jammu area today for allegedly possessing fake currency having face value of Rs 2500, a police officer said.

Ravinder Singh, resident of Patiala Punjab, and Suresh Kumar of Mankot Rajouri were arrested at Canal road, he said.

He said that the accused were arrested and case under various sections of the RPC was registered against them.

Israel probe says Gaza war actions ‘legitimate’, ‘lawful’

Israel today defended its conduct in the 2014 Gaza war as both “lawful” and “legitimate” in an inter-ministerial report into the deadly 50-day conflict.

And it insisted its forces did not intentionally target civilians or civilian targets, drawing conclusions that were rejected out of hand by the Palestinians.

The internal report, which was put together by the foreign and justice ministries with input from the military and the National Security Council, was released two weeks before a UN report into the conflict.

Mining of sand, gravel set to resume in Haryana: Official

Mining of sand, boulder and, gravel, halted for almost five years, is set to resume shortly in Haryana, a much-needed relief to construction sector.

The mining of these materials is likely to resume soon as environmental clearance for 12 mines in Ambala, Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, Faridabad, and Palwal has been recommended to authorities, an official spokesman said here today.

He said only formal approval is awaited.

“Clearances for river-bed mining are expected in a month with the Ministry Of Environment and Forests set to finalise uniform sand mining policy/ guidelines.

Pak imposes moratorium on executions during Ramzan

Pakistan has imposed a ban on executions during Ramzan after hanging about 150 convicts in nearly six months since it lifted the moratorium on death penalty, giving a temporary reprieve to a death-row prisoner who rights groups say was a juvenile at the time of the crime.

The Interior Ministry issued an order yesterday asking all provincial governments not to carry out any executions in the Muslim month of fasting.

Ramzan is expected to start from Thursday or Friday depending on the sighting of the moon of the next Islamic lunar month.

Gehlot slams Raj govt move to cut tax on tobacco products

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot today condemned the BJP-led state government’s decision to reduce tax on tobacco products saying it would be a “disastrous step”.

“Recently the state government has reduced the tax on tobacco products by 20-30 per cent, that was ridiculous,” Gehlot said in a statement here.

“It would be disastrous step playing with the health of people who were addict to tobacco as they would use it more,” the senior Congress leader said.

Respite from heat as temperature drops in Haryana, Punjab

The maximum temperature across Haryana and Punjab today plunged by upto nine notches, a day after rains lashed several parts in the two states, providing much-needed relief to people from hot weather conditions.

Hisar, which generally turns out to be the hottest place in the two states during summers, was the coolest town in the region today with maximum temperature at 31.6 degrees Celsius, nine notches below normal.

‘Militant’ arrested in Poonch along with wife and children

Police in the frontier district of Jammu and Kashmir have arrested a suspected militant who had crossed over to the Indian side from Nepal along with his wife and three children.

“Yes we have made the arrest, a militant along with his family has been arrested. As the investigations are on right now we won’t be able to divulge further details,” SSP, Poonch J S Johar told PTI.

Abdul Ganie, a resident of Marota village under Suronkote Tehsil was arrested late last night along with his wife who is a Pakistani national and his three children, a source privy to the investigation said.

UK gin exports up by a third

The UK, the world’s biggest exporter of gin, has shipped the national spirit worth a record 390 million pounds last year.

Exports of UK gin have risen by 37 per cent in the past five years, with sales to 139 countries bringing 1.76 billion pounds to Britain’s economy.

The UK is the biggest exporter of gin in the world and 70 per cent of the country’s gin production goes to discerning drinkers overseas, Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said.

In 2014, the country exported enough gin to make over 1.6 billion gin and tonics.

Myanmar opposition leader Suu Kyi wraps up China visit

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi wrapped up her first visit to China today, a trip that saw her meet the country’s President Xi Jinping ahead of Myanmar elections in November.

Pictures of her trip posted online showed her meeting Xi and other Communist party officials, visiting the Great Wall of China and practicing calligraphy.

Suu Kyi visited Beijing, Shanghai and Yunnan province, which shares a border with Myanmar.

S Africa bans Sudan president from leaving over arrest warrant

A South African court today issued a temporary ban on Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir leaving the country after the International Criminal Court called for him to be arrested at a summit in Johannesburg.

Bashir, who is wanted over alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in the Darfur conflict, mostly travels to countries that have not joined the ICC, but South Africa is a signatory of the court’s statutes.
