TASMAC supervisor attempts suicide

A 38-year-old supervisor in a state-owned TASMAC liquor outlet today attempted suicide as he was unable to bear alleged pressure from senior officials to pay Rs 1.26 lakh ‘swindled’ by one of the three staff at the shop in neighbouring Tirupur District.

Antony consumed poisonous cowdung powder and was found unconscious near a temple in Udumalpet by some passersby, who admitted him to a government hospital, police said.

Charred bodies of 2 young women found in Haryana

Charred bodies of two young women were today found in a heap of burning cow-dung cakes near Dehisara village in the district.

According to police, one Ramnivas was returning from his field at around 3 pm when he noticed the fire and informed other villagers and cops.

“Soon, firemen reached the spot. While dousing the fire, the firemen noticed the two bodies. The bodies, which were badly burnt, were taken out and sent for postmortem, SHO, Kundli Police Station, Anil Kumar said, adding, DSP Pradip Kumar also reached the spot to investigate the matter.

Man dies in hospital; kin stage protest alleging negligence

A 42-year-old man admitted to a hospital here died this morning, triggering protest by his family members who alleged negligence on the part of the medical staff.

Ramavatar Yadav, who worked as an electrician in the Army’s Base Hospital in Delhi, was admitted to Gargi Hospital at Sector-1 here at around 1 am last night as he was ailing for the last few days, his brother Shyam Yadav said.

Alleging negligence on the part of doctors and hospital staff, the deceased’s brother said that Ramavatar was taken to ICU last night and there was no one to take care of him.

Washington ‘disappointed’ no action taken against Bashir

The US said today it was disappointed Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir was allowed to return home from a meeting in South Africa even though he faces an international arrest warrant.

State Department spokesman Jeffrey Rathke stopped short short of using stronger language. He did not explicitly say that the United States regretted South Africa’s failure to arrest Bashir, who faces charges of crimes against humanity.

Carlos regains hurricane strength off Mexican coast

Officials closed schools and readied shelters along Mexico’s southwestern coast as Hurricane Carlos swirled just offshore, battering beaches with high waves and strong winds.

The storm grew back into a marginal hurricane today, but the US National Hurricane Centre said it was likely to strengthen only slightly before fading back to tropical storm force by Wednesday which brushing past the Puerto Vallarta region.

The storm was centred about 140 kilometres southwest of the port city of Lazaro Cardenas around midday today with top sustained winds of 120 kph, the Hurricane Centre said.

Tunisia policemen killed in clashes with jihadists

Four policemen were killed and several others wounded today in separate clashes with suspected jihadists in Tunisia, which has seen a surge in radical Islam since the 2011 uprising.

The interior ministry blamed an Al-Qaeda-linked group for one attack and said “terrorists” — the term it uses for jihadists — were involved in the second.

In the first clash in central Tunisia, three policemen and a jihadist were killed when national guardsmen, acting on a tip-off, tried to ambush two armed men who were allegedly planning attacks, it said.

14 dead, hundreds of zoo animals wiped out in Georgia floods

Nine people were missing in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi today, a day after freak floods killed 14 people and swept away zoo animals, some of which were shot after being found prowling the streets.

The death toll from the worst floods to hit Tbilisi in decades climbed to 14 after rescuers found an elderly man in the rubble of a destroyed house and another dead person in a park, officials said.

Nine people were still missing as of this evening, a government official said, down from an earlier count of 20.

East Ukrainians stage rare rally against rebel command

Several hundred Ukrainians in the country’s war-torn east demanded that pro-Russian insurgents remove scores of rocket launchers from crowded city neighbourhoods and stop provoking return government fire on their homes.

Oil prices drop on Greece, Iran

Oil prices slid today as dealers fretted over a collapse in Greece’s debt talks, traders said.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for July delivery dropped 33 cents to USD 59.63 a barrel compared with Friday’s close.

Brent North Sea crude for July shed $1.47 to stand at USD 62.40 a barrel in late London deals.

Markets are “closely tracking the Greek debt crisis and the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the big six powers”, said Sanjeev Gupta, analyst at business consultancy firm EY.

A Pakistani pilot got pulses racing on social media today after photos from the Paris Air Show reminded some of Top Gun star Tom Cruise.

Squadron Leader Yaser Mudasser became an unwitting Twitter star after shots circulated of him showing off Pakistan’s new JF-17 Thunder fighter jet to a diplomat.

But Mudasser was somewhat less cocky than Maverick, the cult hero played by Cruise in the 1980s hit film, when asked about the surprise attention.

7 red sander ‘smugglers’ held; vehicles, 30 logs seized

Police today arrested seven alleged smugglers and seized 30 red sander logs besides three vehicles from them in two separate incidents near here.

The arrests and seizures were made this morning near Kamalapuram on Ballari-Tirupathi highway and at Sugali Bidiki on Kurnool-Chittoor National Highway, said Kadapa district Superintendent of Police G Ashok Kumar.

Pak Army chief in Russia, discusses defence ties

Pakistan Army chief General Raheel Sharif today arrived in Russia and discussed bilateral ties, including defence and regional security, with the Russian Land Forces Commander.

“The COAS (Chief of the Army Staff) met Russian Land Forces Commander Colonel General Oleg Sayukov,” said Pakistan Army spokesman Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa.

“Discussions were held on the regional security, bilateral defence cooperation and high level military exchanges,” he said.

Gen Sharif was given a guard of honour in front of the Kremlin after his arrival on a three-day visit, the army said.

A PIL has been filed in the Madras High Court bench here seeking punitive action against a Tamil Nadu government irrigation official for allegedly ordering special poojas to propitiate rain God for copious inflows into Mettur Dam, the lifeline of Cauvery delta farmers.

Petitioner N Ilango, an advocate, submitted before a bench comprising Justices S.Manikumar and G.Chockalingam that Chief Engineer (Irrigation) S.Asokan had issued a circular directing the Water Resource Organisation Executive Engineers to perform Special poojas on June 1 to invoke the rain God.

The Congress today sought clarification from the Assembly Speaker on the status of resignation of rebel Telugu Desam Party MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav, who is now a Minister.

Death toll from defective GM ignition switches rises to 114

The death toll from faulty ignition switches in General Motors small cars has risen by three to 114.

Victims’ families are being offered compensation of at least USD 1 million each by attorney Kenneth Feinberg, who was hired by GM last year. In addition, Feinberg will make offers to 229 people who were injured in crashes caused by the switches in the Chevrolet Cobalt and other older cars.

GM recalled 2.6 million of the cars last year, but acknowledged it knew about the switch problems for more than a decade.

Gang selling cars with fake registration certificates arrested

A gang selling cars with fake registration certificates was arrested by the Warangal Commissionerate from Parimala Colony at Hanamkonda here today, a police official said.

Addressing a press conference Warangal Police Commissioner Sudheer Babu said that six cars, a tractor, a computer, a printer, Rs 50,000 in cash and 30 grams of gold was seized from them.

Those accused were identified as T Sudheer Reddy from Pandikunta village of Mulugu mandal, Mohammed Sadik from Puppalagutta resident, B Rakesh Reddy from Warangal and M Naveen from Papatpelly in Khammam district.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghuvar Das today said that the proposed new capital and the Vidhan Sabha premises will come up with the consent of people and the government’s top most priority will be to rehabilitate those living on the earmarked land.

Sudan’s Bashir flies out of SAfrica, defying court order

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir flew out of South Africa today, defying a court order for him to stay as judges weighed up whether he should be arrested for alleged war crimes and genocide.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) said it was “disappointed” at South Africa’s failure to heed its calls to detain Bashir on long-standing arrest warrants over the Darfur conflict.

As his plane took off on the final day of an African Union leaders’ summit in Johannesburg, the local high court was still hearing arguments over an urgent application to force the authorities to detain him.

Kurds seize border post in battle for Syrian town

Kurdish forces seized a post on Syria’s border with Turkey, a vital supply line to the Islamic State group, as they battle for the jihadist-held town of Tal Abyad.

The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) took up positions on the Syrian side of the border post, an AFP photographer said, after they advanced on Tal Abyad from east and west and cut the road south to Raqa, the IS de facto capital.

“Tal Abyad is completely surrounded,” said YPG commander Hussein Khojer.

“There is nowhere Daesh can escape to,” he said, using the Arabic acronym for IS.

Israel allows 70 Hebron shops to reopen after 15 years

Israel has approved the reopening of around 70 Palestinian shops which it closed 15 years ago in the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron, its mayor announced on today.

“The Israeli army’s leadership allowed the reopening of stores on Sahla Street, which runs from the area near the Ibrahimi mosque” through Hebron’s old town, Dawud al-Zaatari told journalists.

“This is the first time the army has allowed these shops to open since the beginning of the second intifada” or uprising in 2000, he added.
