Two coaches of the city-bound Bangalore-Chennai Mail derailed here today, but there were no casualties.

The incident occurred at Basin Bridge near Central Railway Station this morning, a Southern Railway official said.

There were no casualties. Some trains were delayed as a result but operations were restored later, they added.

Chidambaram demands release of letters to UK authorities

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said letters written to British authorities on Lalit Modi case during UPA rule should be released as they will answer the former IPL Commissioner’s accusations against him and Congress.

“The complete answer to Mr Lalit Modi’s accusations against UPA can be found in the letters to the UK Chancellor. Release them,” Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader, tweeted.

ACB notices to TDP MLA, MLC for quizzing in cash-for-vote case

The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has served notices on TDP MLA and a MLC nominee as part of questioning in connection with the cash-for-vote case.

“Notices have been served on S V Veeraiah, TDP MLA from Sathupally in Khammam district and MLC nominee Vem Narendar Reddy seeking their appearance as part of questioning in the case,” an ACB officer said today.

Vem Narender Reddy had unsuccessfully contested the Telangana Legislative Council polls held on June 1.

279 children killed in Yemen conflict

At least 279 children have been killed and 402 wounded since the escalation of violence in Yemen, which began on March 26, said a UN spokesman.

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said the number of children in Yemen who have been killed as a result of conflict over the last 10 weeks is four times that of all those killed last year, Xinhua quoted Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the secretary-general, as saying.

Kid falls in pit, dies

A young boy fell into a pit at Medpally. It is said that a pit existed near an under construction building. 6-year-old, student Bahauddin fell into the pit filled with rain water and drowned. Medpally police registered a case and started investigations.

Body recovered from Husain Sagar

Police recovered the body of a man from Husain Sagar Lake who was mysteriously missing from past two days. On a tip off, Ramgopalpet police retrieved the body from the lake. The man has been identified as R Ravindra, R/O of Rajiv Nagar. His age is said to be around 26 years. It is said that Ravindra had developed illicit relations with a married woman. Police suspect a murder case.

‘Black’ activist resigns helm of US civil rights group

A US civil rights activist has resigned from a post at the country’s leading African American advocacy group amid allegations she is white but has masqueraded for years as being black.

Rachel Dolezal’s resignation from her job yesterday as president of the Spokane, Washington chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People came as her parents, who are white and says she is too, urged her to seek counselling.

The Washington state chapter of the NAACP posted Dolezal’s resignation letter on its Facebook page.

Alaska wildfire quickly grows, forces homes to evacuate

An Alaska wildfire that has mushroomed in size was prompting help from people offering their homes to scores of displaced residents and their animals.

The fire north of Anchorage has led to the voluntary evacuation of up to 1,700 homes and has struck the heart of sled dog country, including 15 or so mushers who call Willow home.

About 500 dogs have been rescued, according to Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly member Vern Halter, a former Iditarod musher.

Mexico says Russian daughter admitted killing mom, sister

The 19-year-old daughter of a Russian woman has confessed to killing and dismembering her mother and her 12-year-old sister, because she thought they were performing witchcraft against her, Mexican prosecutors in the border state of Baja California have said.

An official in the state prosecutors’ office, who was not authorised to be quoted by name, yesterday said the older daughter had not yet been detained because police were waiting for a formal arrest warrant.

‘No doubt’ Boko Haram behind deadly Chad bombings: Hollande

France’s Hollande boosts ties with former foe Algeria

French President Francois Hollande arrived today in Algeria for a visit aimed at tackling the “common battle” of the once bitter foes against jihadists from Mali to Libya.

An Italian newsweekly has published a draft copy of Pope Francis’ eagerly awaited encyclical on the environment.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev Federico Lombardi, said today that the document published by L’Espresso was not the final version and that the official encyclical would still be released as scheduled on Thursday.

Francis has said that climate change is “mostly” man-made and that humankind has a moral imperative to radically change its behaviour to protect the planet for future generations — as well as to prevent the poor from suffering due to the sins of the rich.

Study: Nazi propaganda left life-long mark on German kids

Anti-Semitic propaganda had a life-long effect on German children schooled during the Nazi period, leaving them far more likely to harbor negative views of Jews than those born earlier and later, according to a study published today.

The findings indicate that attempts to influence public attitudes are most effective when they target young people, particularly if the message confirms existing beliefs, the authors said.

Researchers from the US and Switzerland examined surveys conducted in 1996 and 2006 that asked respondents about a range of issues, including their opinions of Jews.

Buying a house may soon become costlier in the national capital as the AAP government is contemplating to increase circle rate for flats of group housing societies and DDA by around 100%.
