NY prison guard gets 5 years in prison for inmate death

A former guard at New York City’s troubled main prison today was sentenced to five years in jail after being convicted of ignoring the pleas of a dying inmate.

Former Department of Correction Captain Terrence Pendergrass was also fined USD 5,000 after a jury convicted him in December of depriving 25-year-old Jason Echevarria of his civil rights.

Haryana to have its own accreditation body

Haryana government is considering forming its own accreditation council on the lines of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to assess and accredit higher education institutions functioning in the state.

While presiding over a meeting of State Higher Education Council here, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who is also the council’s chairman, today directed the concerned officers to explore possibilities for creation of State Assessment and Accreditation Council (SAAC).

Greek debt talks end with no deal: EU

Crunch talks to resolve a five-month standoff between Greece and its EU-IMF creditors ended Thursday without a deal, Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commission vice-president for the euro, said today.

“No deal at Eurogroup,” Dombrovskis said in a tweet after the talks broke up after 90 minutes of discussion on Greece.

“Strong signal for Greece to engage seriously in negotiations. The Eurogroup stands ready to reconvene at any moment,” he added.

In re-vote, US House passes key trade promotion bill

US lawmakers voted today to give President Barack Obama fast-track authority to negotiate a major trans-Pacific trade accord, moving it closer to his desk after a dramatic defeat last week.

Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) narrowly passed the House of Representatives by 218 votes to 208 as a stand-alone bill, after congressional leaders uncoupled it from a worker-assistance program that crashed to defeat Friday when most Democrats voted against it in order to block the trade package.

TPA now heads to the US Senate, where it could receive a vote as early as next week.

US jail uncovers apparent escape plot involving bedsheets

Authorities say officials at a New York City jail have uncovered an apparent escape plot while sweeping the facility after learning of drug smuggling there.

Law enforcement officials said today that an inmate at the Manhattan Detention Center had neatly tied together 64 bedsheets and stashed them under the sink in his cell.

The discovery of the plot comes less than two weeks after two convicted murderers escaped from a maximum-security prison in northern New York state. A manhunt is underway.

Jalyukta Shivar project to cover 20,000 villages: Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said that the ‘Jalyukta Shivar’ project will be undertaken in 20,000 villages with the aim being to help them end the problem of water scarcity.

Fadnavis reviewed the progress of the project at Pachod, Chittegaon and other villages of the district.

As of now, 6,000 villages have undertaken this project and, in the coming two years, 11,000 more villages will be added to the list, he said.

Stating that startups in e-commerce segment are asking for too high a price for parting stakes, Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata today took a dig at the fledgling sector, saying “valuations” and not “evaluations” are driving the play.

Illegal sand mining: Maha to invoke MPDA, amend existing laws

Maharashtra cabinet is likely to approve a proposal to take action against the sand mafia under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (MPDA) at its next meeting.

Minister of state for Revenue Sanjay Rathod today said the government had prepared the proposal.

The government would not be enacting a new law to curb the illegal sand mining, instead it was going to amend the existing laws to make them more stringent, he said.

The Bombay High Court bench here today issued a notice to Maharashtra government seeking a reply by June 22 on a petition filed by a former PWD Secretary, named by the state Anti-Corruption bureau in Maharashtra Sadan corruption case challenging the FIR against him.

Krishna waters: Crucial meet convened of AP, T’gana officials

The Centre today convened a crucial meeting to finalise the quantum of Krishna river water to be shared between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and discuss the jurisdiction of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB).

According to sources, officials of both states also discussed the various projects across the river falling in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

“We discussed the sharing of water from the Krishna between the two states with regard to the award of Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal I,” said an official who participated in the meeting.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has allocated Rs 100 crore to develop the Vemulawada temple, he announced here today.

Rao arrived at Vemulawada at about 1 pm alongwith his family members and was welcomed by Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leaders.

He prayed at the Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Devasthanam for more than an hour.

Speaking to reporters this evening at the temple premises in Vemulawada, he said that more funds will be allocated for the purpose.

US to pay millions for Agent Orange claims

Ending years of wait, the government agreed today to provide millions of dollars in disability benefits to as many as 2,100 US Air Force reservists and active-duty forces exposed to Agent Orange residue on airplanes used in the Vietnam War.

It is the first time the Department of Veteran Affairs, a government-run military veteran benefit system, has established a special category of Agent Orange exposure for troops who weren’t on the ground or didn’t serve on inland waterways in Vietnam.

Businessman shot dead in WB

One businessman was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in Midnapore (West) district today.

Police said two motorcycle borne unidentified miscreants fired on the businessman Jay Prakash Sahu (40) when he was returning home from his shop near Kharagpur.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The locals blocked roads in protest against the killing but the police reached the spot and cleared the road after about four hours.

Further investigations are on.

Good inflow in dams following rains

Incessant rains for the second consecutive day today led to better inflow into the dams in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts.

The Courtallam waterfalls here also got copious water.

The Papanasam dam got an inflow of 300 cusecs while Manimutharu and Kadananathi dams got 75 cusecs and 60 cusecs respectively, officials said.
