St Stephen’s PhD student accuses prof of sexual abuse

A student of St Stephen’s College has accused a college professor of sexual harassment and alleged that the principal tried to protect him when the matter was reported to the college authorities.

The student who is doing her PhD under the supervision of Satish Kumar, an assistant professor in the college’s Chemistry department, has lodged an FIR against him alleging that she was sexually assaulted by him.

77 civilians killed in Burundi unrest, says rights activist

At least 77 civilians have been killed in clashes with Burundi’s security forces since the start of anti-government protests in April, a rights activist said today.

Another 1,000 people have been arrested and dozens of prisoners tortured, Pierre Claver Mbonimpa, head of the Association for the Protection of Human Rights and Detained Persons, told The Associated Press.

Mbonimpa said his group has representatives across the nation tallying the death toll and visiting with prisoners. He also said he had personally helped several protesters who suffered torture to get treatment.

Thane: Congress leader attacked

The Congress group leader in the Thane Municipal Corporation and his friend were tonight attacked by some unidentified persons here, police said.

According to police, in the incident which occurred at 9.30 P.M. In the Srinagar locality, Congress leader Sanjay Gadigoankar suffered injuries to the head.

Gadigoankar was rushed to a private hospital, police said, adding that a case is yet to be filed in this connection.

22-year-old woman gangraped by seven in Gurgaon

A 22-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by seven persons at a guesthouse in the Sushant Lok area here, police said today.

The victim, who hails from West Bengal, has alleged that she was raped by one Kapil and his associates, said ACP Rajesh Kumar, adding that the complaint came this morning.

A medical examination of the complainant has confirmed rape, he said.

According to police, the victim said that she knew Kapil and, on the day of the crime, had met him at a market from where they went to the guesthouse.

Pilot faulted in reality TV helicopter crash that killed 3

Federal investigators have determined that the pilot whose helicopter crashed while filming a reality television show two years ago likely caused the accident that killed him and two others.

The National Transportation Safety Board issued its probable cause report Monday in the February 2013 crash that occurred during filming of a military-themed reality show for the Discovery Channel. The report determined that the pilot, who was having difficulty seeing because of a small light being used to illuminate an actor, should not have continued flying.

Lottery fraud: Man duped of over 16 lakh in HP

One person was allegedly duped of Rs 16.85 lakh by a man who promised him a lottery of over Rs 2 crore here, police said today.

The victim P Venktachalam, posted as civilian staff in Dalhousie cantonment, complained that he had received a message and call on his mobile phone on March 15, informing him that he has won a lottery of Rs 2.35 crore, police said.

He was asked to deposit Rs 16.85 lakh to receive the lottery amount, they said.

The complainant deposited the amount in two different bank accounts in the month of March, they said.

eBay sells back stake in Craigslist, ending dispute

US e-commerce giant eBay said today it has sold its stake in Craigslist back to the online classified listings group, ending a legal dispute between them.

The California tech giant had taken a 28.4 percent stake in Craigslist in 2004.

Craigslist sued eBay after the online auction giant launched its own classified listing in 2007 called Kijiji, alleging that eBay had hidden the rival project at the time of its investment.

Iran bars women ticket holders entry to volleyball match

Iranian authorities denied women ticket holders entry to today’s volleyball match between Iran and the United States despite their having the necessary permission, the sport’s association said.

The Iranian Volleyball Federation had provided special accreditation to 200 women handpicked to attend the men’s Volleyball World League match in Tehran.

The tickets were reserved for “family members of players, supporters of the visiting team and executive officials,” said Reza Hassanikhou, head of security at the sports ministry.

HIV positive jail inmate dies

A 30-year-old HIV positive inmate of the district jail here today died at a local hospital where he was receiving treatment, police said.

The inmate was admitted to the hospital two days ago after his blood pressure and pulse rate became abnormal, police said.

A post-mortem has been done and the other formalities were being completed, they added.

Jharkhand bans sale of thermocol plate

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghuvar Das today imposed a ban on the sale of thermocol plates with the move aimed at the promotion of leaf plates in the state.

Das, who was on two-day visit to West Singhbhum district, including to naxal-affected Saranda, made the announcement on the concluding day of his visit.

The move will help generate employment for the poor and tribals who are engaged in making leaf plates, he said. The ban is for the entire state, he added.

WikiLeaks says it’s leaking over 500,000 Saudi documents

The transparency website WikiLeaks says it’s in the process of publishing more than 500,000 Saudi diplomatic documents, a move that echoes its famous release of US State Department cables in 2010.

WikiLeaks says in a statement that it has already posted roughly 60,000 documents to its website. Most of the documents appear to be in Arabic.

‘No agreement’ as Yemen peace talks end in Geneva

Yemen peace talks ended in Geneva today with no agreement, but the United Nations said it was still optimistic a ceasefire could be reached “pretty soon.”

“I won’t beat around the bush. There was no kind of agreement reached,” said the UN’s special envoy for Yemen, Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed.

But he hailed “certain positive signs” in his negotiations with the warring factions, adding that both sides seemed to agree on the need for a ceasefire.

Shanty dwellers protest in Ghaziabad

Scores of shanty dwellers of Kaushambi today staged a sit-in protest at the collectorate here.

Protesters led by district president of Dalit Sena Suraj Sanyasi handed over a memorandum to SDM. They said some persons have been threatening them to vacate their shanties.

Sanyasi said more than hundred families are living in their huts since last 15 years and have their bank accounts and Aadhar cards on the addresses of these shanties. They have been threatened frequently by anti-social elements to vacate the land.

In one of the scenes in the film, a man dressed up like Lord Shiva is seen mouthing offensive words.

Retd. employee dies suspiciously

A retired employee died in suspicious circumstances in Saifabad. It is said that 58-year-old, Sadanand, R/O of Chintal Basti, who was retired RTC employee was alone in the house on Thursday. His wife was not in the house however when she returned after some time Sadanand was in unconscious state. He was rushed to the hospital where he died while undergoing treatment. A glass was present near Sadanand. Police suspect that he might have consumed poison. A case has been registered and investigations are on.
