SSKM Hospital director seeks retirement after transfer order

Director of state-owned super speciality SSKM Hospital Pradip Mitra was today transferred to a new medical college following which the medical officer sought voluntary retirement terming the transfer as “an insult.”

According to the transfer order that was served to him today, he was “released from his duties” at the SSKM Hospital here from today. He was to join the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital.

But Mitra, who served the SSKM director for about seven years, described the transfer order as “demotion” and said he would rather love to retire.

Manpasand Beverages allots shares to 11 anchor investors

Fruit drinks maker Manpasand Beverages Ltd today said it has alloted 5.625 million equity shares at Rs 320 per share aggregating to Rs 180 crore to 11 anchor investors.

The company has raised Rs 180 cr from anchor investors which include Goldman Sachs, Birla Sun Life Insurance, ICICI Prudential MF, Morgan Stanley, Bharti AXA Life, SBI MF, UTI MF, BNP Paribas, Shinhan BNPP, Amundi Funds & Ashoka Pte, a statement issued here said.

The IPO, which opens on June 24, would close on June 26. The price band fixed from Rs 290 to Rs 320 per equity shares.

20-yr-old-girl jumps from third floor, electrocuted, critical

A 20-year-old girl was seriously injured after she allegedly jumped from the third floor of a showroom here today and was electrocuted by a high tension wire before hitting the ground, police said.

The incident took place this morning when Pooja, working in the showroom at Bank Road here, went to the third floor and threatened to jump from the spot, they said.

Hearing her voice, shopkeepers in the area rushed to towards her and pleaded not to jump while some others hurried to the third floor to rescue her, Investigating Officer Mahendra Singh of City police station said.

Hospital superintendents asked to ensure strike ends

The Delhi government today directed all Medical Superintendents of its hospitals to ensure that the strike by resident doctors is called off in their respective hospitals.

According to a senior official, medical services were hit as the agitation of thousands of government doctors entered the second day following which Delhi government invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to force an end to the strike.

Woman killed, Minister’s relative held

A 22-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her in-laws in South 24 Parganas district today and police arrested four persons, including the victim’s father-in-law, who is a relative of a Minister.

Home-maker Ajifa Bibi’s body was found hanging at her in-laws’ place at Rajarhat Chakjaidi village this afternoon but her father claimed that her in-laws have murdered her and tried to pass it off as suicide, police said.

A section of people in the village under Ushti police station ransacked the house following the incident and engaged in a skirmish with the police.

Facebook reveals new security tool

Facebook announced today it has been using a new security tool to help detect and remove malicious software for users of the world’s biggest social network.

Facebook said it was working with Kaspersky Lab, bolstering a program implemented with other online security firms including ESET, F-Secure and Trend Micro.

“Thanks to the collaboration with these companies, in the past three months we have helped clean up more than two million people’s computers that we detected were infected with malware when they connected to Facebook,” said Trevor Pottinger, a Facebook security engineer.

Boys makes flutter over admission

Five boys of a private school at Sivagiri in Tirunelveli district today caused a flutter when they attempted to set themselves ablaze to protest against the school management not giving them admission in eleventh standard.

Police said the said the boys, who had passed to tenth standard had gone to the school with their parents for getting admission in eleventh standard. They also held talks with the management of the school. But they refused to give them admission.

The Syrian army has reopened a key oil supply route near Islamic State-controlled Palmyra, as the jihadist group has mined the city’s ancient UNESCO-listed ruins.

However, the advance toward the central city from the west, reported by a pro-government newspaper and a monitoring group, and stepped up air strikes, do not indicate an imminent offensive to retake it.

IS overran Palmyra on May 21, sparking fears that the radical Sunni Muslim group might repeat the sort of vandalism it has carried out in Iraq and destroy one of Syria’s most famous archaeological sites.

30 killed in northeast Nigeria by 2 girl suicide bombers

Two girls blew themselves up today near a crowded mosque in northeast Nigeria’s biggest city, killing about 30 people, witnesses said.

It is the fourth suicide bombing this month in Maiduguri, which is the birthplace of the Boko Haram Islamic extremist group.

Fishmonger Idi Idrisa said one teenager exploded as she approached the mosque crowded with people from the nearby Baga Road fish market, performing afternoon prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.

The second teen appeared to run away and blew up further away, killing only herself, he said.

Govt intends to give USD 9 bn to public sector banks: Mehrishi

The Indian government intends to provide USD 9 billion (about Rs 57,000 crore) to public sector banks towards recapitalisation over the next two fiscal to meet global risk norms and for growth, Finance Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said today.

“What we are aiming at is an infusion of about USD 3 billion in the current year and perhaps twice as much in the next year. So, that is the broad time schedule – whether it will happen in August or January I can’t say,” he told CNBC TV here.

The salaries of principals and clerks of nine inter colleges in Amethi district has been stopped by the district inspector of schools for laxity in provide information to teachers and other staff who are set to retire on June 30.

District inspector of schools Dr O P Mishra ordered stoppage of salaries of the “negligent principals and concerned clerks” of the nine inter colleges, who despite notices, did not submit the documents related to pension and EPF of the teaching and non-teaching staff scheduled to retire on June 30.

Foreign direct investment increases to $3.60 billion in April

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in India increased to USD 3.60 billion in April, says Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion’s data.

In April 2014, it stood at USD 1.70 billion, while in March, the foreign direct investment dipped by 40 per cent, according to DIPP data.

Amongst the top 10 sectors, computer software and hardware received the maximum FDI of USD 709 million in April, followed by automobile (USD 655 million), trading (USD 441 million), services (USD 217 million) and power (USD 109 million).

Switzerland is dropping part of a prosecution case against Egypt’s longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak, his close aids and family members, involving hundreds of millions of Swiss francs frozen in Swiss banks.

Switzerland froze the funds and opened criminal proceedings over suspicion of money laundering and “support of a criminal organization” after the 2011 popular uprising that ousted Mubarak.
