Abuses by police and security forces were among the most significant human rights problems in India last year, a US government report today said even as it noted last year’s Indian general election as the largest ever in history.

“India’s parliamentary contest in April 2014 was one of the largest elections in history,” Secretary of State John Kerry said in his preface to the State Department’s annual Congressional-mandated report in which he noted that around the world, more people chose their leaders in competitive elections than ever before.

Tunis sacks 4 policemen over Ramadan ‘abuse’

Four Tunisian police who harassed coffee shop owners who stay open during daylight hours in the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan have been sacked, officials said today.

The interior ministry said in a statement that the district chief for Monastir in central Tunisia and three policemen from Marsa, a northern suburb of Tunis, were sacked for “abuse of power”.

Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui said their sacking was linked to “cases of coffee shops that stayed open during the time of fasting”.

He declined to give further details.

Uttar Pradesh government today decided to provide more facilities like medical and transport to political prisoners, who were arrested and jailed under Maintenance of Internal Security Act during Emergency from 1975 to 1977, called as ‘Loktantra Senani’.

“Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has decided to provide more facilities to Loktantra Senani. Besides, pension of Rs 10,000, they will now get free medical and trasnsport facilities too,” cabinet Minister and SP spokesperson Rajendra Chowdhury said.

Actor Lee Pace has said that he is unhappy that “Hannibal” has been cancelled by NBC.

The 36-year-old “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor has worked with “Hannibal” showrunner Bryan Fuller on “Pushing Daisies” and “Wonderfalls” in the past, and was hopeful of landing a role in the horror series, reported Digital Spy.

French interior minister says UberPop must be closed down

France’s interior minister, in a bid to halt a day of sometimes violent protests by taxi drivers angered by UberPop, has said that the low-cost car service must be shut down.

He said orders would be given to seize their vehicles.

Bernard Cazeneuve’s announcement came after striking taxi drivers angered at a loss of income caused by cheap services like UberPop blocked highways, burned tires and smashed cars around France.

AAP govt proposes Swaraj budget, earmarks Rs 253 cr

AP demands gas, oil exploration royalty

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu today demanded that the state be paid royalty for on-shore and off-shore gas and oil exploration.

He was addressing a joint press conference with Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmandra Pradhan.

The Chief Minister said he had requested the Centre for paying Andhra Pradesh this royalty because it needed funds direly.

The 19th finance committee on oil energy had worked out a formula for the payment of cess and royalty to the states, he pointed out.

TN Women’s Commission chief welcomes HC order on rapist-victim

The order by a Madras High Court judge referring the case of a convicted rapist for a mediation and settlement with the victim was welcomed by Tamil Nadu state Women’s Commission chief Visalakshi Nedunchezian.

“Mediation is the only solution and if they (the rapist and the victim) can join together, this Commission will be very happy to see that both the criminal and the girl affected get together along peacefully. That is our aim and objective,” she said.

Amount released for fee-reimbursement and scholarship

Telangana government has released Rs. 60 Cr for fee-reimbursement and scholarship schemes for minority students. Secretary Finance Department Ramakrishna Rao issued orders in this connection. According to GO RT 2226, 50 cr were released for fee-reimbursement while 10 cr were released for scholarship during financial year 2015-16.

Government had allotted Rs. 435 cr for both the schemes from current year budget while 60 cr has been released as 1st instalment. Further 375 cr have to be released for both the schemes.
