Constable arrested for graft

The anti-corruption bureau today arrested a police constable while taking a bribe of Rs 15,000.

The accused was identified as Manoj Sarbare, attached to sub-divisional police office, Ahmednagar (Rural).

He had sought the bribe from the complainant to thwart a possible externment order, ACB said.

Parner police station had sent a proposal for externing the complainant to sub-divisional-police officer at Ahmednagar under Mumbai Police Act.

Sarbare allegedly demanded bribe for preparing a report in favour of the complainant. He was arrested in a trap by ACB at his office.

Bloomberg Philanthropies to partner govt in smart city mission

Bloomberg Philanthropies, a United States-based foundation, will collaborate with the Indian government for the smart city mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today.

Collaboration between the Ministry of Urban Development and Bloomberg Philanthropies for the Cities Challenge, announced today, is a result of two meetings between Prime Minister Modi and Michael Bloomberg, its founder and former New York Mayor, Bloomberg Philanthropies said in a statement.

Case registered against AP CM over ‘provocative statements’

Police here today registered a case against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and five TDP leaders for their alleged threatening and provocative statements against Telangana government.

The case, for sedition, conspiracy and other offences under the IPC, was registered by L B Nagar police station following a court order, said inspector E Srinivas Reddy.

Quebec mayor threatened over English ‘ban’

Police were investigating today after the mayor of a city in the mostly French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec received death threats for seeking to ban English at council meetings.

The threats against Longueuil Mayor Caroline St-Hilaire were posted on social media after she claimed to be “irritated” with a colleague who insisted on speaking both of Canada’s official languages at the meetings, saying it was a huge waste of time.

Police have stepped up the mayor’s security.

Wife kills her husband after getting fed up of his harassment

A woman stabbed her alcoholic husband to death after getting fed up of his harassment, at S Kotturu area under G K Veedhi police station limits of the district today.

The deceased husban was identified as V Somaraju (33) while the accused is V Ammoji, who is still at large.

G K Veedhi police sub-inspector T N Murthy said that Somaraju was an idler addicted to alcohol, while his wife Ammoji is a daily wage worker whose earnings he used to pursue his vices.

Dalai Lama to speak at British rock festival

The Dalai Lama will address revellers at the Glastonbury music festival in Britain on Sunday with a message of “compassion, non-violence and the oneness of humanity”, his office said today.

“We’re honoured to welcome the Dalai Lama to Glastonbury 2015,” Emily Eavis, the festival’s organiser, said in a statement.

“He will be talking in the Green Fields and exploring the farm this Sunday as part of his trip to the UK. What a special moment for the festival!” she said.

Monsoon active in Rajasthan, Dhambola records 16 cm rainfall

Southwest monsoon lashed north- eastern parts of Rajasthan as Dhambola in Dungarpur recorded the maximum rainfall of 16 cms in last 24 hours, a MeT report said.

Rainfall occurred at many places in Udaipur, Banswara, Sawaimadhopur, Jhalwar, Sirohi, Kota, and Ajmer districts as the SW monsoon advanced further, the report said.

Abu Road recorded rainall of 12 cm followed by Reudar 11, Pindwara and Mount Abu 10 each, Pipalkhunt 9, Aral in Ajmer 8, Galiakot and Bagidora 7 each, Ghatol 6, Jagpura 5, and one to four cms at many other places.

Switzerland to extradite Bosnian Muslim war crimes suspect

Switzerland today authorised the extradition of former Bosnian Muslim commander Naser Oric to Bosnia rather than Serbia, which had issued the war crimes warrant for his arrest.

Oric, who led Muslim forces in Bosnia’s east during its 1992-1995 civil war, was arrested on June 10 in Geneva, accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity against ethnic Serbs during the conflict.

His arrest sparked outrage in Bosnia and threatened relations with Belgrade — but Switzerland has decided to send Oric to his home country, where he also faces war crimes allegations.

Israeli, Palestinian support for two states slipping: poll

A joint Israeli-Palestinian poll published today shows dwindling support on both sides for a Palestinian state alongside Israel as a solution to the conflict.

The survey, by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, shows 51 percent of Israeli respondents in favour of what is known as the two-state solution, down from 62 percent last June.

Support among Palestinians was also 51 percent, down from 54 percent a year ago.

Filmmaker Karan Johar thinks nobody liked him in ‘Bombay Velvet’, where he donned the role of a villain, as he is not getting acting offers anymore.

Anurag Kashyap’s directorial venture ‘Bombay Velvet’ saw the 43-year-old producer making his full-fledged acting debut.

Johar played the role of a rich businessman, who also happens to be a villain in the crime thriller. Set against the backdrop of love, greed, violence and Jazz, ‘Bombay Velvet’ is based on historian Gyan Prakash’s book ‘Mumbai Fables’. The film, however, failed to make any mark on box-office.

Eunuchs chop off man’s private parts in UP, 3 arrested

A group of five eunuchs allegedly chopped off genitals of a man Bhojpur village area here following which three have been taken into custody, police said today.

A police patrol party yesterday noticed a youth in an unconscious state on roadside and was found bleeding profusely from his private parts, Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagat Ram Joshi of Modinagar circle said.

Police immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital from where he was further referred to Meerut medical college.

Scholarship exam now for class 5th and 8th in Maharashtra

Maharashtra government has decided to stop scholarship examinations for class 4th and 7th students, and instead conduct them for those styding in class 5th and 8th.

“The exam will be known as primary and secondary scholarship exam,” state education minister Vinod Tawde said here.

Details of exam structure would be published in December this year.

Maharashtra government provides scholarship to students of Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Vimukt Jati Nomadic Tribes (VJNT) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) students every year.

Salvage team lands on listing ship

Three days after the Indian Navy and Coast Guard rescued 20 persons onboard MV Jindal Kamakshi, a merchant ship which had begun to list off Vasai coast in neighbouring Palghar district, the salvaging efforts are underway.

There has been no oil spill from the ship, the Coast Guard said in a release here, and added that salvage team had been put onboard.

The statement said that anchor of the ship had been dragging. The ship, initially 35 km from the coast, was now about 20 km away.

Opposition calls Delhi Budget bogus, gimmick, AAP praises it

The opposition today slammed Delhi Budget terming it as “bogus” and “gimmick”, even as Aam Aadmi Party called it a forward-looking one which has given priorities to sectors like education, health and transport.

Slamming the budget, BJP Delhi president Satish Upadhyay said AAP had talked a lot on budget expenses through Mohalla Sabhas dialogue and when the chance to implement came, only 0.65 per cent budget expenditure, that is just Rs 253 crore, has been given for Swaraj Nidhi.

“This Delhi Budget is a gimmick. It is more or less a continuation of AAP election speeches,” he said.

“There can be no doubt that this law is working. It has changed, and in some cases saved, American lives. It set this country on a smarter, stronger course,” Obama told reporters hours after the supreme court in a major victory for him ruled that insurance subsidies in ‘Obamacare’ can go to residents of any state.

President of Rajasthan unit of ruling BJP Ashok Parnami tonight appeared to rule out the resignation of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje in the wake of Lalit Modi row, saying “what is there for her to quit”.

Facing a volley of questions from the media when he came out of Raje’s residence after spending a couple of hours there, Parnami said “kyon karengi resign, aisi kya baat hui hai (why would she resign… What is there to resign?”

When the media askede a pointed question if Raje will resign today or tomorrow, Parnami said “there is nothing for her to resign”.

Filmmaker Karan Johar says there is a need for more multiplexes and single screen theatres to come up in the country to extend the reach of films.

The 43-year-old, who wears many hats- director, screenwriter, reality dance show judge- sought government support for the film industry.

“Holiday periods are blocked (for film releases) as it brings in more money. Earlier two-three films used to release at the same time…Like ‘Dil’ and ‘Ghayal’ or ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Gaddar’ – all these films were successful,” Karan said today.

Youth held for alleged rape, murder

Guwahati police today arrested a 23-year-old youth for allegedly raping and killing a college girl.

Two days back, body of a 20-year old college student was found without any clothes in the city’s Noonmati area, just few hours after she had left home.

“We have arrested a youth, identified as Akbar Ali. Though he is saying that he did not rape her, we are not believing him and continuing our investigation,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Guwahati Central) Amitava Sinha said.

Court reserves order on Mumbai lawyer’s bail plea

A magistrate’s court here today reserved till tomorrow the order on the bail application of Janhavi Gadkar, the 35-year-old lawyer who is accused of ramming her car into a taxi under the influence of alcohol and killing two persons.

Gadkar’s lawyer Amit Desai argued that the investigation was over and police did not need Gadkar’s custody any longer.

If she was kept in jail, it would amount to subjecting her to pre-trial punishment, he said.

The senior counsel conceded that it was a serious case and the accused must be thinking “if she could turn back the clock”.

Coast Guard catches dhow with smuggled cigarettes worth Rs 1cr

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) today intercepted a dhow in the Gulf of Kutch off Gujarat coast with nine persons on board and seized a stock of foreign cigarettes worth Rs one crore.

All those onboard the dhow, named MSV Safina Al Meraj, were Indian nationals. The dhow was taken to Salaya harbour in Jamnagar district, said inspector general Kuldip Singh Sheoran, commander Coast Guard Region (North-West).

The ICG also recovered two Thuraya sets (satellite phones).

Malaysia take top spot in pool; Great Britain rout China

Izwan Firdaus scored two goals to propel Malaysia to a 4-2 victory over a strong Ireland side and surge to the top of Group B in men’s Hockey World League Semifinals at the KHC Dragons here today.

Izwan scored in the 13th and 55th minute to help Malaysia spike the challenge from Ireland. Having earlier prevailed 3-2 over China, Malaysia now head the group with six points from two outings.
