Sudan teen lashed for “indecent” skirt: lawyer

Khartoum, November 28: A 16-year-old south Sudanese girl was lashed 50 times after a judge ruled her knee-length skirt was indecent, her lawyer and family said in the latest case to push Sudan’s Islamic law into the spotlight.

The mother of teenager Silva Kashif said on Friday she was planning to sue the police who made the arrest and the judge who imposed the sentence, as her daughter was underage and a Christian.

Students suspended over ‘Kick a Jew Day’

Florida, November 28: Ten students at a Naples, Florida, middle school have been given one-day, in-school suspensions for participating in “Kick a Jew Day,” in which Jewish students were targeted for assault, according to news reports in the local media.

Parents and students at North Naples Middle School told NBC channel 2 in Naples that many students — all of them Jewish — were targeted in the attacks, which took place last week.

The station obtained a letter from one parent who said his daughter was a target of the attacks.

IAEA Adopts Anti-Iran Resolution

Washington, November 28: In a 25-3 vote, the P5+1 (the permanent five members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) succeeded in getting their draft resolution condemning Iran’s civilian nuclear program passed through the IAEA. Every major nation supported the resolution, with Venezuela, Malaysia and Cuba voting against it.

The resolution is a blanket condemnation of the Iranian nuclear program and demands the immediate halt of construction at the Qom enrichment facility. The vote is seen as a first step toward more sanctions against Iran.

Israel records sharp fall in Muslim birth rate

Occupied Jerusalem, November 28: The birth rate among Israel’s Muslim Arab minority has fallen by a quarter since 2000, official figures showed on Friday.

The annual birth rate fell from 3.8 percent in 2000 to 2.8 percent at the end of 2008, according to the figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics released on the occasion of the Muslim Eid Al-Adha holiday.

In 2008, Israel had a Muslim population of 1.24 million, including 256,000 Muslim Palestinians living in annexed Arab east Jerusalem.

Hyderabad celebrates Eid-ul-Zuha

Hyderabad, November 28 (Siasat News): Muslims across Hyderabad City thronged Eidgah and mosques on Saturday to pray on Eid-ul-Zuha.

One of the main centres for the Eid festivities was the Eidgah Mir Alam and Makkah Masjid where thousands of devotees gathered to offer prayers.

In keeping with tradition, people wore new clothes to celebrate the festival.

After prayers, the devotees will sacrifice goats and other animals. People also donate meat to the poor on this occasion of sharing and sacrifice.

Obama’s grandmother performs Hajj

Riyadh, November 26: Sarah Obama, the wife of the American President Barack Obama’s grandfather, arrived in Saudi Arabia where she is set to perform the annual Muslim pilgrimage, or Hajj, press reports said Wednesday.

Sarah was accompanied by her grandson and Obama’s cousins who will all be hosted as guests of the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz.

At least 48 dead in Saudi Arabia flooding

Jeddah, November 26: Flooding killed at least 48 people in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a heavy downpour, while 900 people were saved, official reports said on Thursday.

Civil defense authorities said 44 people died in the city of Jeddah and four in Mecca. Some were drowned or were killed by collapsing bridges and in car crashes, while the rescue services spokesman said another 900 people had to be rescued after being stranded by the floodwaters caused by rainfall .

AIDS death toll passes 25 mln: UNAIDS

Shanghai, November 25: AIDS has killed 25 million people worldwide but new infections are slowing sharply, the UN said on Tuesday as it issued its annual report that mixed hope with a warning against complacency.

Almost 60 million people have been infected by the HIV virus since it was first recorded but prevention programmes are having a significant impact, the UNAIDS agency said in its latest report, released here in Shanghai.

Halal food going mainstream in Europe: Nestle

The Hague, November 18: The business of selling food that is halal, or acceptable to Muslims, is set to grow rapidly in Europe in coming years as more supermarket chains target the sector, a Nestle executive said on Tuesday.

Frits van Dijk, executive vice president at the world’s biggest food group, told Reuters on the sidelines of the World Halal Forum in The Hague he expected the halal food business in Europe to grow by 20 to 25 percent within the next decade.

Geneva, November 18: Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz on Tuesday told voters that the call of the muezzin, or Muslim imam who calls people to prayer, would not sound in Switzerland, as he campaigned against a referendum motion seeking to ban the building of minarets.

“Muslims should be able to practice their religion and have access to minarets in Switzerland too. But the call of the muezzin will not sound here,” said Merz in a video broadcast to the nation.

New Delhi, November 09: Cabinet ministers in the first term of the UPA government have spent more than Rs300 crore on their foreign and domestic travels in the last three years.

The data provided by the cabinet secretariat shows more than Rs137 crore were spent by ministers of cabinet rank on the foreign travels between fiscal 2006-’07 and 2008-’09, with highest in the year 2007-’08 when more than Rs115 crore were spent by them on such travels.

Men should wed Mums: Malaysian party urged

Kuala Lumpur, October 29: Malaysia’s conservative Islamic party has urged Muslim men to marry single mothers as additional wives instead of “young girls”, a state official said.

Wan Ubaidah Omar, a cabinet minister from northern Kelantan, which the party controls, said the proposal aired in state parliament this week was needed to help single mothers and widows in the underdeveloped region.

“Muslim men usually like young girls as their additional wives, so I suggest instead of taking these young girls, why don’t they marry the single mothers as their second or third wife?” she told.
