Aquila, which means sensible and intelligent in Arabic, was launched last month by founder and publisher Liana Rosnita Redwan-Beer as the first magazine to cater for young, educated Muslim women with a worldly outlook who also want to remain true to their faith. Modest and fabulous is the magazine’s slogan.

Sharjah, April 23: Police in the conservative Sharjah emirate are hunting for unmarried couples sharing the same address.

The door-to-door search is the latest effort by Sharjah authorities to enforce Islamic codes in their enclave, which borders far more freewheeling Dubai. The campaign, detailed Thursday in local media, follows a police report that a couple was arrested for living together out of wedlock.

Violators may face jail and deportation. But Shariah, or Islamic law, remains on the books and includes possible sentences of lashings.

On March 31, the federal parliament’s home affairs committee voted unanimously to endorse a nationwide ban on clothes or veils that do not allow the wearer to be fully identified, including the full-face niqab and burqa.

Judge sought SEX from refugee

Ottawa, April 22: A former Canadian immigration judge was today found guilty of trying to coerce sex from a South Korean woman in exchange for granting her asylum, the court said.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Thea Herman ruled former Immigration and Refugee Board judge Steve Ellis, 50, was guilty of breach of trust and bribery in relation to the refugee application.

New Delhi, April 22: An office-boy of a call centre was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly installing a spy-camera in the ladies’ lavatory in the office, police said.

Sanjay was apprehended following investigations into a complaint filed by a call centre in north-west Delhi’s Peetampura and its women employees after they found a spy-camera in a packet of freshener.

The incident came to light four days ago but the complaint was made today, a senior police official said.

Hyderabad, April 22: Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik became involved in a fresh imbroglio in Hyderabad on Wednesday, a day after he got his passport back from a court.

A little- known Muslim organisation filed a complaint in the Nampally criminal courts against Shoaib and 13 others, including his first wife Ayesha Siddiqui and second wife Sania Mirza, alleging that the ‘triangular marriage’ episode had brought disgrace to the community.

Judge-prosecutor affair in US SC

Washington, April 20: The US Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear the case of a Texas man who learned after being sentenced to death that the prosecutor and judge at his murder trial were having an affair.

The highest US court declined to intervene in the case of Charles Dean Hood, 40, who filed a petition in the case last September.

Hood was convicted in 1990 of a notorious double murder carried out the year before. His execution has been delayed five times over the years amid various appeals.

Hyderabad metro fails to get bidders

Hyderabad, April 19: The much- hyped Hyderabad Metro Rail Project has hit the roadblock with the pre- qualified bidders evincing least interest in submitting their financial bids before the stipulated deadline.

The Andhra Pradesh government had earlier set April 9 as the deadline for submission of financial bids and later extended it to April 21. However, since none of the shortlisted bidders came forward till Saturday, it has extended the deadline further till June 7.

Mumbai, April 19: At least 200 worship places, which were declared illegal by the Bombay high court in 2003 and subsequently demolished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), have sprung up again.

In 2003, the Bombay high court, hearing a public interest litigation filed by social activist Bhagwanji Rayani, had ordered demolition of 1,300 religious places of the total 2,000-odd; to its credit, the civic authorities are believed to have carried out the order.

2 explosions outside Bangalore stadium

Bangalore, April 17: Two explosions have been heard outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. There are reports that six to eight people have been injured.

The blasts are of low intensity, according to the police. One security guard has been injured seriously in the explosion.

The IPL match between teams Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians was scheduled for 4pm today. The toss which takes place at 3:30pm has been delayed.
