86 vehicles torched in Pune’s Sun city

Eighty-two two-wheelers and four cars parked in various residential societies were burnt by unidentified persons in Sun City area here in the wee hours today, police said.

The miscreants reportedly unplugged the petrol tube of the vehicles and set them on fire between 3 AM and 4 AM, they said.

The motive behind the crime, that shocked and affected a large number of residents in the area, was not clear, said police inspector B Kashid of Sinhgad police station.

Shamsabad Gram Panchayat took up fogging operations in Muslim localities like, Ahmed Nagar, Qazi Gali, Moin Mohalla and Mehdi Garden areas of Shamsabad in view of the month of Ramadan. EAMCET Engineering web counselling likely on July 6

The first phase of web counselling i.e. verification of certificates for EAMCET Engineering concluded on June 23 however date and schedule has not been given for the next phase i.e. selection of college and course through web counselling. The list of colleges is being compiled. Muslim Minority Colleges which partake in convenor counselling are SWI while the colleges which conduct separate counselling are SWII. 2 yr old falls from height, dies

In an appalling incident occurred at Charkaman a boy fell from height and died. According to Charminar police, 2-year-old Sandeep Malik, S/O Sudheer Malik, R/O of Char Kaman was playing on 2nd floor of the building when he fell from the height and sustained serious injuries. He died while undergoing treatment.

23 women Hajj aspirants selected under Mahram quota

Special Officer Telangana State Hajj Committee Prof. S A Shukoor in a press note told that central Hajj Committee selected 23 women from Telangana state and 2 from Andhra Pradesh under Mahram quota through drawing of lots. Selected aspirants are requested to deposit amount of Hajj expenditure according to the category of their Mahram on or before July 6. Mumbai-based businessman shot dead in Meerut

A 35-year-old cloth merchant from Mumbai was shot dead by three unidentified miscreants near a private college here, police said today.

Police said Mohammed Shahid, a resident of Bandra in Mumbai, had came here on Thursday for business purpose. He was staying at a hotel near Suraj Kund.

After finishing his work, Shahid was on his way to airport, when he was shot dead by the assailants last mid-night, they said.

KFC challenges Hyderabad report on bacteria found in fried chicken

The Indian unit of fast food chain KFC, owned by Yum Brands Inc , on Friday challenged the results of a test showing the presence of bacteria linked to food poisoning in a sample of its fried chicken, dismissing them as “false allegations”.

Food safety has hit headlines in India after government food safety inspectors found excess lead in packets of Nestle’s Maggi instant noodles.

The company disputes the test results and a subsequent recall order, but it has become India’s worst safety scare involving packaged food in a decade.

New compound shrinks pancreatic cancer tumours

Scientists have designed a new chemical compound that has reduced the growth of pancreatic cancer tumours by 80 per cent in treated mice.

The compound, called MM41, was designed to block faulty genes by targeting little knots in the DNA, called quadruplexes, which are very different from normal DNA and which are especially found in faulty genes.

The findings showed that MM41 had a strong inhibiting effect on two genes – k-RAS and BCL-2 – both of which are found in the majority of pancreatic cancers.

Hollywood stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have teamed up to produce a movie inspired by the FIFA scandal.

The film is based on “Houses of Deceit”, a book by BuzzFeed’s reporter Ken Bensinger, reported Ace Showbiz.

The film will revolve around FIFA executive Chuck Blazer and his role in the largest sports and public corruption scandal in history.

As “Star Trek 3” began production in Vancouver, Canada earlier this week, Paramount has signed two lead stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto for a potential fourth installment.

Pine and Quinto, who play Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock respectively, have granted an option for “Star Trek 4” as the studio renegotiated their deals, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sources said Paramount and Skydance Entertainment “recently completed last-minute renegotiations with (Chris and Zachary), a move that has added as much as USD 10 million to USD 15 million to the budget.”

Sci-fi thriller “Interstellar” has won big at the 41st Annual Saturn Awards, taking six awards including best science fiction release.

The film saw off competition from “Edge of Tomorrow”, “Godzilla” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” to win the honour, reported Ace Showbiz.

Additional District Magistrate arrested for accepting bribe

Vigilance and Anti-Corruption bureau officials today arrested Ernakulam Additional District Magistrate (ADM) for allegedly accepting bribe from a person for granting explosive license, a top official said here today.

The accused ADM, B Ramachandran was arrested from his quarters this morning after he allegedly took Rs one lakh bribe from a native from nearby Thrippunithura for issuing license for running his explosive store, the official said.

Noted Ghazal singer Pandit Vithal Rao passes away

Noted ghazal singer Pandit Vithal Rao passed away on Thursday night in the hospital. Pandit Vithal Rao was missing from quite some time. He had gone to Shirdi along with his family members and went missing from there. According to police Vithal Rao was found near Country Club, Begumpet in very critical condition. Police rushed him to Gandhi Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment. It remains unknown how he came to Hyderabad from Shirdi. His last rites will be performed today at 1 pm. His dead body would be kept at his house from 11 am to 1 pm.

Car in Raj CM’s convoy hit by TV channel vehicle

A vehicle in the convoy of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was said to have been hit today by a TV channel’s car as she was headed to the airport here on her way to New Delhi.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the car in Raje’s convoy “was hit by a vehicle of TV channel obstructing the way”. However, there was no mention of anybody being hurt in the incident.

In a statement here, the CMO added, “At a few places, accidents were about to occur as Raje’s convoy was on way to airport and the electronic media followed her.”
