Medical condition of recaptured US convict upgraded

An escaped killer who spent three weeks on the run was in stable medical condition Monday, a day after he was shot and recaptured in New York state, officials said.

David Sweat, 35, was shot twice in the torso by a state trooper just south of the Canadian border on Sunday.

He was transported to a hospital in the state capital Albany, where he was initially listed in critical condition.

Albany Medical Center medical director Dennis McKenna said doctors evaluated Sweat and determined he did not need surgery.

Chinese premier urges Greece to stay in euro

China wants Greece to stay in the euro and is ready to offer support on the debt crisis, Premier Li Keqiang said today, as Athens faces a referendum that could see it leave the single currency.

Li, the prime minister of the world’s second largest economy, said after a summit with EU leaders that it was a “critical” moment in the standoff between Greece and its EU-IMF creditors.

“China wants to see Greece stay in the eurozone and we urge relevant creditors to reach agreement with the Greek government at an a early time,” Li told a news conference.

Four people murdered by their relatives due to a land dispute

Four people, including a retired headmaster and a police head constable were allegedly killed by their relatives due to a dispute over two acres of land in Malpura hamlet, the Hiwarkhed police said here today.

The deceased have been identified as retired headmaster Baburao Charate (60), police head constable Dhanraj Charate (55) and his two sons, sons namely Shubham (22) as well as Gaurav (20), the police said.

Allegedly, their throats were slit and their dead bodies were found lying at the spot for over five hours last night, the police said.

Govt officer robbed of her jewellery by conmen

A senior government officer was duped of her jewellery by two conmen, who posed as policemen, while she was on her morning walk today.

The incident took place in Bapa Nagar area where the woman officer on a morning walk when she was approached by the two men in police uniform and advised her to take off her jewellery including bangles and chain in view of an alleged murder in the area, said a senior police officer.

JSW Steel to raise Rs 4,000 cr through QIP

JSW Steel today said it plans to raise up to Rs 4,000 crore through the Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) route as the steel maker eyes a capacity of 40 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2025.

The company will take up the issue of raising a maximum of Rs 4,000 crore at its annual general meeting next month, July 28, it said in a BSE filing.

Godavari ‘pushkaram’ related work to be completed by July 5

Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana said here today that all Godavari ‘pushkaram’ related works will be completed by July 5.

The 12-day ‘pushkaram’ event which is conducted along the banks of the river Godavari, is a religious bathing and temple worship ritual, scheduled to commence from July 14.

He said that 95 per cent of work has been completed and remaining work would be completed in two days.

Narayana, along with Rajahmundry city mayor P Rajani Seshasai inspected the the work completed so far.

Man injured after mobile phone blows up in pocket

A 30-year-old man, working in a diamond polishing unit here, received burn injuries to face and hand when his mobile phone, kept in the pocket, exploded.

The incident took place when Bhavesh Thakkar, resident of Puna Gam area, was sitting with his friends at a shop this afternoon.

“I had kept my mobile phone in the upper left pocket of shirt. Suddenly it exploded, causing severe burns on the left side of my face and on hands. The phone was totally destroyed in the explosion,” Thakkar told PTI.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was discharged after preliminary treatment.

Sex racket busted, Assam girls among 4 rescued

Four girls including two from Assam who were allegedly brought to Delhi on the pretext of job and then forced into prostitution were rescued by police and four persons arrested in this connection.

The accused have been identified as Sandeep Kumar alias Vikrant, his wife Aisha Begum, Chandan Kumar and Sunil Mishra. Police conducted two raids at different places in Delhi yesterday and arrested the accused and rescued four girls.

18-months-old baby crushed to death by state transport bus

A state road transport corporation bus crushed an 18-months-old baby boy to death on the Warangal-Kazipet highway on Monday, after he slipped from his mother’s hands, a police official said.

According to a police official, the incident took place when T Sumalatha, a resident of Gopalapuram village tried to get down from an autorickshaw near a private hospital in the Subedari area, along with her 18-months-old boy.

Soon after the accident, the mother of the baby boy fell unconscious and was admitted to the hospital.

Gujarat Congress today sought Rs 2,000 crore package for the flood-affected people in the state.

“The Gujarat government should immediately announce a package of at least Rs 2,000 crore for those who have been affected by floods,” Gujarat Congress chief Bharatsinh Solanki said here today.

“The devastation due to heavy rains and floods in Amreli district is huge. Farmers’ lands have been washed away and they cannot grow crops on it. Thousands of houses are destroyed and small businessmen are also affected due to the floods,” Solanki, who had recently visited the district, said.

Charmadi Ghat is now being used as the alternate route between Mangaluru and Bengaluru since the closure of Shiradi Ghat stretch of the road on the national highway 75 in January this year for repair and development. Since then, the Charmadi Ghat had been witnessing frequent road blocks as the narrow road was in a poor condition.

Road to Dhanushkodi to be completed before this year end

Dhanushkodi, an holy destination for pilgrims and tourists at the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu, will get a good road before the end of this year.

The road which was devoured by the cyclonic storm in 1964, was being freshly paved by the Highways Authorities from Mukundharayar Chattiram to Dhanushkodi, which is considered the “Athi Sethu” (the ancient Sethu Samuthiram).

A Youth Akali Dal leader allegedly committed suicide here following which police today booked seven persons, including two senior leaders of the ruling Akali Dal for abetment of suicide.

Santokh Singh Sukhana, National General Secretary of the Youth Akali Dal, was today found hanging in a bathroom of a hotel, SHO Kotwali Inspector Dharm Pal said. Said.

Seven persons, including two Akali leaders namely Pritam Singh Bhairowal and Gurdip Singh Gosha a Youth Akali leader, have been booked by the police on basis of the suicide note recovered, he said.

Two minor girls from Odisha were allegedly sold by their parents to two persons in Madhya Pradesh, following which a police team has been sent to the state to trace the girls.

Six minor archers enter India and Asia books of records

Six archers, all aged below 12, entered the Indian Book of Records and Asia Book of Records by pulling off spectacular performance at a mixed team event held at Cherukuri Volga Archery Academy here today.

While archers Dolly Shivani and Nischal jointly scored 110 points, Shivani and Virat Sai scored 85 and the duo of Shivani and Datta Sai 90.

The event was held in varying ranges at 10 metres, 9 metres, 8 metres, 7 metres and 6 metres.

‘Tantrik’ detained in West Bengal

A tantrik who allegedly took the blood of his brother to use in his rituals was detained from his house in Burdwan district, police said.

Police raided their Kanchan Nagar village house falling under Burdwan police station after neighbours lodged a complaint in this regard following which the tantrik, identified as Shubhajit Chanda, 40, was detained.

They also rescued his brother Shamik and admitted him to hospital, police said.

According to villagers, Chanda has been drawing the blood of his brother Shamik for the past one and a half months.

9 killed in China mine theft attempt

Nine people, who had sneaked into an abandoned coal mine in an attempted theft in eastern China’s Fujian Province, have died after inhaling toxic gasses.

Tweleve people had entered the closed mine in Yongding District yesterday to dig coal.

Three of them returned after they smelled a strong odour.

They called up the police after the nine persons who had descended into the mine first did not show up, rescuers said.

Rescuers were sent into the mine but a high-concentration of carbon-monoxide slowed the process.

The nine bodies were recovered today.

Local train rams into dead end at Churchgate; 5 hurt, 3

A local train today crashed into the dead end at the Churchgate station here, injuring five passengers and disrupting the suburban train services on the Western Railway line.

Gurbaj completes his 200th International Cap

India midfielder Gurbaj Singh added another feather in his cap as he played his 200th international match when he took the field against Australia in the FIH Hockey World League Semi-Final here today.

The 26-year-old Gurbaj, who made his international debut in 2006 Doha Asian Games, is a regular member of national hockey team and has been a part of the team in various international tournaments.

IS executes over 3,000 in Syria in year-long ‘caliphate’

The Islamic State group has executed more than 3,000 people in Syria, including hundreds of civilians, in the year since it declared its self-described “caliphate,” a monitor said today.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group monitoring Syria’s conflict, said it had documented 3,027 executions by IS since June 29, 2014.

Among those executed are 1,787 civilians, including 74 children, said the Observatory.

Members of Sunni Shaitat tribe account for around half of the civilians murdered.
