Going up skirt sizes increases postmenopausal breast cancer risk by 33%

A new study has revealed that overall weight gain during adulthood, especially thickening of the waist area increases the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer by 33 percent.

The study was based on almost 93,000 women aged over 50taking part in the UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS) in England who had gone through the menopause, and had no known breast cancer when they entered the study between 2005 and 2010, also most of them were white, educated to university degree level, and overweight at the point of study entry, with a BMI of 25-26.

Border stand-off: India, China to hold flag meet today

Amid a continuing stand-off at the border, India and China will hold a flag meeting on Thursday in Chushul, Ladakh, to address the issue.

As the two sides hold the flag meeting on Chinese request, India has demanded restoration of the “pre—September 10” situation in Chumar area of Ladakh, defence sources said in Srinagar.

Meanwhile, New Delhi is working on naming a Special Representative as demanded by China during President Xi Jingpin’s visit to India last week to hold talks on the border issue and demarcation of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), they said.

Over 1,000 arrested in EU crackdown on organised crimes

As many as 1,027 people were arrested in a large-scale police operation against drug and human traffickers across Europe this month, the Hague-based European police organisation Europol announced Wednesday.

Law enforcement officers from 34 countries took part in the largest-ever coordinated operation against organised crime in the European Union (EU), Xinhua quoted Europol as saying.

In addition to police officers from the 28 EU member states also agents from Australia, Colombia, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland and the United States joined the operation named ‘Archimedes’.

Obama to create world’s largest marine sanctuary

US President Barack Obama will create the world’s largest marine sanctuary in the Pacific Ocean in a bid to protect sea life from climate change, the White House has said.

Obama will on Thursday sign a proclamation designating the marine reserve in the south-central Pacific, thereby making it off-limits to development and commercial fishing, a statement said.

The third meeting of the SAARC Culture Ministers is currently on to chart out a roadmap for cultural ties in the region for the period 2014-17.

The ministers are expected to come out with a Delhi Declaration, the details of which will be made known by Thursday afternoon.

The major activities envisaged in the agenda include strengthening of cultural institutions in member-countries, cultural festivals in the region, preservation and conservation practices and promoting literacy and reading habits.

Minor girl ‘buried alive’ by step-mother

A six-year-old girl was allegedly buried alive by her step-mother in Shashtripuram area of the district UP.

Sumiksha was buried by her step-mother, Archana, on Sunday and her body was found yesterday, said Ashok Kumar Singh, Circle Officer of Haripur police station.

Archana has been booked for murder and arrested, the police officer said.

According to the police, the accused buried the minor girl alive on Sunday and told her husband that she had gone missing.

However, after three days, Archana revealed the matter to her nephew who informed the police.

New iPhones run into software, bending complaints

Apple’s newest iPhones have ran into some glitches after users complained that a new software update blocked their calls, and a video circulated to suggest that the larger of the two new models is vulnerable to bending.

Apple said it would stop providing the software update, which it began distributing yesterday morning to fix several issues in last week’s iOS 8 operating system for iPhones and iPads.

Congress and BJP were involved in a blame-game over the quashing of coal block allocations by the Supreme Court, accusing each other of flouting norms in making the allotments.

While the BJP said its stand on ‘illegal’ coal block allocations made during the previous UPA regime stood vindicated with the Court quashing 214 out of 218 coal blocks, the Congress suggested that the order had proved hollow the campaign launched by the BJP against the erstwhile UPA government about corruption in the matter.

Pleasant morning in nat’l capital

It was a pleasant, breezy morning in the national capital today with the minimum temperature recorded at 24.2 degrees Celsius.

According to the MeT department, humidity was at 63 per cent till 8.30 A.M. This morning.

“There will be mainly clear skies today and the maximum is expected to settle at 36 degrees,” said a MeT official.

The maximum yesterday was at 36 degrees, two notches above normal while humidity levels had oscillated between 38 and 78 per cent.

The minimum yesterday was recorded at 24.4 degrees, a notch above normal.

Leading NRI businessmen G P Hinduja and S P Hinduja have been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Business at a ceremony in the House of Lords.

The award, constituted by the Indo-European Business Forum (IEBF), was presented to the Hinduja brothers at the event which was hosted by Baroness Sandip Verma, an Indian- origin minister in the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change.

IEBF was founded back in 2007 by Indian-origin lawyer Vijay Goel as a non-profit platform to promote business ties between India and the EU.

Financial service provider MasterCard is focused on finding new ways to replace cash with electronic ways of paying using innovation, the company’s CEO has said.

MasterCard is “focused on finding ways for people to interact in simple, smart ways with the ecosystem to be able to replace cash with electronic ways of paying,” said Ajay Banga, MasterCard president and CEO.

Addressing the MasterCard Innovation Forum here, Banga highlighted innovations, pointing out the use of biometrics and facial recognition for safety and security.

Rupee extends losing streak for 4th straight day, falls past 61 Vs USD

Extending its losing streak for the fourth straight day, the rupee weakened by five paise to 61.01 against the US dollar in early trade Thursday at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on high demand for the American currency from importers.

Forex dealers said though increased demand for the US currency from importers and dollar’s gain against other currencies overseas put pressure on the rupee but a higher opening in the domestic equity market capped the losses.

Four persons allegedly pelted stones and damaged the vehicle of a Samajwadi Party MLA in Panwasa area, police said today.

Sarvesh Kumar, the driver of SP MLA Ram Khiladi Yadav, lodged a complaint against four persons alleging that the accused had last night pelted stones and damaged the legislator’s vehicle in Panwasa village when he had gone there to inaugurate a Ram Lila, said SSI Laxmi Shanker Sharma.

No arrests have been made so far in connection with the complaint, police said.

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani has topped the Forbes magazine`s list of the top 100 richest tycoons in India for the eighth consecutive year with a net worth of USD 23.6 billion, up USD 2.6 billion from last year.

For the first time, the top 100 richest tycoons in India are all billionaires, according to the latest Forbes rich list. The combined net worth of India`s 100 wealthiest is USD 346 billion, up more than a third from USD 259 billion in 2013.

General Motors launches new SAIL compact, SAIL sedan

General Motors India today launched the new Chevrolet SAIL hatchback and sedan priced between Rs 4.41 lakh and Rs 7.64 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The new SAIL hatchback is priced between Rs 4.41 and Rs 6.81 lakh and the SAIL sedan is priced between Rs 5.19 and Rs 7.64 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi), the company said in a statement.

Both the models are available in diesel and petrol options. The diesel option is powered by a 1.3 litre engine, while the petrol has a 1.2 litre engine.

The realty sector slowdown and lack of business confidence have brought Mumbai down to the 10th position this year, among the top 15 global cities, in terms of office rentals, a recent Knight Frank survey report released on Wednesday said.

Govt postpones decision on revision of natural gas prices

Days ahead of its own deadline for the revision of natural gas prices, government on Wednesday postponed a decision on it by another 45 days to November 15.

The NDA government, after coming to power, had put off implementation of the previous UPA-regime approved Rangarajan formula, which would have at least doubled rates to USD 8.4 per million British thermal unit, till September 30 for holding wider consultations.

The Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi deferred a decision on the issue till November 15, Law and Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here.
