UNICEF has launched a campaign to stop violence against children in the country with some big names from the sports and entertainment fields coming forward to support it.

“This campaign aims at raising awareness about different forms of violence, including physical, emotional and sexual, and child marriage,” UNICEF said in a statement, inviting all to join hands for the cause.

Gold price shines on festive demand, rises up to Rs 590

Gold on Friday regained its sheen in the country’s major bullion markets with prices soaring up to Rs 590, the second biggest single-day gain this year on emergence of buying by jewellers and retailers, triggered by ongoing festive and wedding season.

In the national capital, gold prices climbed the most by Rs 590 to Rs 27,550 per 10 grams. The precious metal has recorded the biggest rise since June 20 this year when it had gained Rs 605 to Rs 28,625 per 10 grams.

Sensex Tanks 168 Points; Auto Stocks Plunge

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets Friday was trading 167.60 points or 0.63 percent down as auto stocks tanked.

Selling pressure was seen in auto, consumer durables and banking sectors, while some good buying was observed in healthcare sector.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 26,429.30 points, was trading at 26,300.76 points (at 12.31 p.m.), down 167.60 points or 0.63 percent from the previous day’s close at 26,468.36 points.

No question of negotiated settlement over Kashmir: Subramanian Swamy

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Friday said that if Pakistan wants peace, talks can be held, but there is no question of a negotiated settlement on Kashmir.

He was responding to Pakistan’s National Security and Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz’s statement in New York.

“We are not going to follow what the previous government did. Pakistan should realize that it’s a small country and they have already lost four times. If they want peace, there can be talks, but there is no question of a negotiated settlement on Kashmir under any circumstances,” said Swamy.

Scientists claim that high levels of calcium in blood, known as hypercalcaemia, can be used by GPs as an early sign of certain types of cancer, and can be diagnosed using a simple bold test.

Hypercalcaemia is the most common metabolic disorder associated with cancer, occurring in 10 to 20 per cent of people with cancer. While its connection to cancer is well known, this study has, for the first time, shown that often it can predate the diagnosis of cancer in primary care.

Noted Egyptian actor Khaled Saleh is no more

Renowned Egyptian actor Khaled Saleh died Thursday, aged 50, after an open heart surgery in Aswan, a city in the south of Egypt.

He breathed his last at the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation in Aswan.

The funeral will be held Friday after dawn prayers, Sameh ElSerity, first deputy of the Actors Union, told state-run MENA news agency.

Saleh was born in Cairo Nov 12, 1964. He was well-known for his roles in “Yacoubian Building” and “Tito”.

Pop star Lady Gaga, known for her racy outfits, was manhandled by a back up dancer during her performance in Amsterdam recently.

The 28-year-old singer, who wore a leather cut-out tiny thong and fishnet tight with a green wig, was picked up by the dancer inappropriately last week.

The dancer grabbed the “Applause” singer round the waist, and carefully threw her over his shoulder, exposing the singer’s entire bottom to the crowd, reports mirror.co.uk.

Assam floods: Death toll mounts to 36

The death toll due to floods in Assam has now gone up to 36 with the recovery of four more bodies on Thursday. The floods in Assam have affected close to 10 lakh people in 13 districts and rendered a majority of people homeless.

Two people died in Krishnai and Kukurkata areas of Goalpara district, has been the worst hit by the floods , while one person was found dead in Tinsukia district and Guwahati.

Heavy rains in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh earlier this week led to the flood like situation.

Meet UAE’s first female fighter pilot on mission to blast IS into oblivion

Maj. Mariam Al Mansouri, the first female fighter pilot among the United Arab Emirates’ forces took part in the airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria, leading her country’s mission to wipe out the extremist group.

According to the Daily Express, Mansouri, 35, was one of the first three to join the Emirati air force when they began to admit women, after she graduated from flight school in 2007.

Dubbed “Lady Liberty”, Mansouri served in UAE’s army before she started training as a fighter pilot.

A 5 inch tall dog from UK, which is a cross between a Daschund and a Chihuahua , might be world’s smallest dog.

Little Chip weighs just 900g and despite his small frame he eats huge amount of his favourite dishes scrambled eggs and pasta, the Daily Express reported.

Dog breeder Emma described her adorable pet as “brilliant and tiny” and said that there were two others in his litter but while they grew he’s just stayed the same size at around five inches tall to the shoulder.

REITs will get investments, no need for more sops: Officials

Real Estate Investment Trusts will help attract more funds into the realty sector and there is no need to provide more tax concessions for it, a senior government official said on Thursday.

REITs and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs) are expected to bring in more global investment and bring transparency into the real estate and infrastructure sectors, respectively.

Capital market watchdog Sebi, whose board last month approved regulations for REITs, is expected to soon notify the new norms.

The advertising move named “Movie Conversation” would display ads about a particular movie to users who have tweeted about similar movies or related keywords, said a report in Hollywood Reporter.

For instance, a Twitter user who follows @XMenMovies might see ads for soon-to-be-released superhero films.

The company will begin testing targeted ads about movies in the next few months.

New Zealand PM worried over civilians joining IS

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key is worried over the issue of civilians joining the Islamic State (IS) terror group.

“Government was aware of a small group of Kiwis who may pose a threat,” New Zealand Herald quoted Key as saying.

“They are brutal, they are highly sophisticated, they are well organised and they are spreading out,” Key added.

“We are not immune, so we know there are foreign fighters fighting overseas and we know and can identify at least a reasonably sized that group that want to leave and join that cause,” he said.

70-year-old blasphemy accused Scot shot by prison guard in Pakistani jail

A 70- year-old Scot awaiting execution in Pakistan over blasphemy charges was shot by a prison guard inside a jail.

Muhammad Asghar, who hails from Edinburgh, was detained in 2010 for writing letters to a number of people claiming to be a prophet .

According to the BBC, the attack took place at 08:30 local time inside the Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, where he was being held.

The guard who shot the Scot was reportedly overpowered and disarmed by prison security, who rushed to the spot after hearing gunshots.

450 IS supporters left for Syria, Iraq: German intelligence

German intelligence estimates put at 450 the number of Islamic State (IS) supporters who have left Germany to travel to either Syria or Iraq to join the jihadis.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for renewed efforts to sustain the unprecedented progress made in improving the health of women and children worldwide.

“For the first time ever, we have the opportunity to end all preventable deaths of women and children within a generation,” Ban said at the ‘Every Woman Every Child’ event held on the margins of the 69th UN General Assembly’s annual debate Thursday.

“Let us seize this historic opportunity as a moral imperative. It is also one of the smartest investments we can make,” Xinhua quoted Ban as saying.

A 14-year-old girl was raped by a shopkeeper in Sadar Bazar locality under Civil Lines police station here, police said today. According to the complaint lodged by victim’s mother, the girl had yesterday gone to the shop where the shopkeeper raped her after closing the shutters.

A case has been registered against the accused who is absconding, SSP H N Singh said.

3 get life term for murder

A local court yesterday sentenced three persons to life imprisonment in a case of murder of an autorickshaw driver in 2011.

Principal District and Session Judge A B Singh convicted Jena Rao, Sanatan Ho and Vijay Sao for the murder of Dharmendra Sao who had gone missing on January 15, 2011 from Sidgora and his body was found a week after from Govindpur.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of the three.

After Dharmendra went missing, his family members lodged a missing report with the police on January 22. His body was found a day after that.

Shabana Azmi started her acting journey on this day in 1974 when “Ankur” was released and the award-winning actress thanks Shyam Bengal for her first break.

The 64-year-old took to Twitter Thursday to share her thoughts and posted: “My first film ANKUR was released 40 years ago on 24th sep 1974. Thank u Shyam Bengal for giving me such a wonderful break (sic).”

A new study has revealed the discovery of 600 million years old fossil in central Guizhou Province of South China, suggesting that complex multi-cellular life existed 60m yrs before skeletal animals appeared on Earth during the Cambrian Explosion.

Geobiologist Shuhai Xiao from Virginia Tech College of Science said that this opened up a new door for them to shine some light on the timing and evolutionary steps that were taken by multicellular organisms that would eventually go on to dominate the Earth in a very visible way.
