Sebi appoints Gyan Bhushan as chief vigilance officer

Capital market watchdog Sebi has appointed Gyan Bhushan as its chief vigilance officer.

He replaces R K Padmanabhan, whose role as chief vigilance officer (CVO) has come under the scanner of CBI with regard to an inquiry in connection with purported weakening of a case against promoters of Bank of Rajasthan (BoR).

Bhushan has been appointed as CVO at Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), according to sources.

CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry looking into the alleged weakening of the Bank of Rajasthan case. BoR was acquired by ICICI Bank in 2010.

Calcutta HC stays UBI’s wilful defaulter tag, says Kingfisher

Beleaguered carrier Kingfisher Airlines on Saturday said it has secured a stay from the Calcutta High Court on United Bank of India declaring the airline and its directors, including promoter Vijay Mallya, as wilful defaulters.

Kingfisher Airlines Vice-President, Corporate Communications, Prakash Mirpuri in a statement said the airline has “secured a stay from the Hon’ble Calcutta High Court on the decision of the Grievance Redressal Committee of the United Bank of India which had earlier declared the airline and its directors (including erstwhile directors) as wilful defaulters”.

The Union Cabinet on Saturday gave its nod for imposition of President’s rule in Maharashtra.

A meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is in the US, decided to recommend President’s rule in the state.

President’s rule was necessitated after Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan resigned following Nationalist Congress Party withdrew its support from the coalition.

Sankara University gets A grade certification from NAAC

The Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit at Kalady here has been accredited with an A grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

An eight-member NAAC team visited the university and its eight regional centres to value the learning, academic and governing activities, a press release here said.

It was the fist university in the state to get the grade, the release claimed.

Former Vice Chancellor of Kavi Kulaguru Kalidasa University, Prof Pankaj Chande was the NAAC peer team leader.

Jayalalithaa convicted in assets case

A trial court here Saturday convicted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets case filed against her by the former DMK government in 1996.

Pronouncing the order, special Judge John Michael Cunha held Jayalalithaa guilty of amassing wealth disproportionate to known sources of her income under sections 109 and 120 (b) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, said Special Public Prosecutor G. Bhavani Singh.

French chef bakes signature dish in desi kulhar!

French Chef Olivier Mahut baked the signature Tartes Aux Fruits in a kulhar and gave it a distinct oriental flavor, in Gurgaon.

The well-known chef from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris wowed the students at G.D. Goenka University by baking the dish in a kulhar and using the traditional Indian gold foil to garnish Pate a Choux, which is a French pastry.

Speaking about his inspiration behind the fusion dish, Olivier said, “Innovation is the international flavor. Adapt to the environment and innovate”.

Asian Games: Indian women’s squash team settles for silver

Gold proved elusive but it was nonetheless a historic silver for the Indian women’s squash team after it went down to Malaysia in the final of the 17th Asian Games here on Saturday.

The team lost 0-2 to Malaysia to settle for the silver after Deepika Pallikal and Anaka Alankamony lost their matches in a contest which lasted a little over an hour. Alankamony opened the proceedings for India and did up some fight before going down 9-11 10-12 2-11 to Odette Arnold Delia in 43 minutes.

‘Dead’ woman wakes up screaming in coffin at own funeral

A Greece-based woman who was declared dead by the doctors reportedly woke up in her coffin just an hour after being buried alive at her own funeral.

According to the relatives and friends of the 49-year-old cancer sufferer, they heard banging and a female screaming from inside the grave, the Daily Star reported.

The dead woman, whose funeral was held at a cemetery in the town of Peraia, was found dead due to the lack of air inside the coffin by the time the gravediggers dug it up.

Egyptian man sets new 1,000 feet deep-diving world record

An Egyptian man has set a new Guinness World Record for the deepest scuba dive by diving more than 1,000 feet below the surface of the Red Sea.

According to Guinness World Records, the 41-year-old man, Ahmed Gabr, said that he decided to dive deeper than any person had before to prove that humans could survive the conditions of deep-sea immersion, Discovery News reported.

Gabr dove off the coast of Dahab, Egypt and reached a depth of 1,090 feet 4 inches, breaking the record previous held by Nuno Gomes of South Africa, who reached a depth of 1,044 feet. (ANI)

Blackberry’s stock rises by almost 5 percent as firm reports lower than expected loss in Q2

Blackberry’s shares rose by 4.6 percent as the firm reported a lower than expected loss in the second quarter.

However, the revenue of the company was lesser than expected.

According to Mashable, the revenues came in for 916 million dollars as compared to the estimated 950 million dollars.

Blackberry’s CEO John Chen said that he was confident that the company would achieve breakeven cash flow by the end of the Fiscal Year 2015.

UK Parliament unanimously endorses airstrikes against IS in Iraq

The United Kingdom Parliament has shown complete support for British airstrikes against Islamic State ( IS) militants in Iraq.

Members of Parliament voted for military action after a seven-hour debate. There were total 524 votes for military action.

The conservatives, Lib Dems and Labour leaderships all supported airstrikes but a few MPs showed concern regarding future engagement in Syria.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said that there would not be a ‘series of immediate hits’ and that there was a long campaign ahead.

A new research has revealed that ‘antibacterial resistance’ may be a bigger risk factor for Cystic Fibrosis disease than perceived.

Researcher Stuart Elborn from Queen’s University Belfast said that more funding and further research are required into antibiotic resistance in order to improve patient outcomes for people with Cystic Fibrosis.

Researchers stated that while not all resistance found in bacteria is caused by antibiotics, the increasing resistance to antibiotics is proving a major problem in treating people with Cystic Fibrosis.

The 47-year-old actress donated the costume to a charity auction in California 20 years ago, where it was snapped up by a private collector, the Daily Express reported.
