Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat said here on Friday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given a great welcome on his visit to the United States.

“PM Modi was given a great welcome in the US. The Indian diaspora is now excited about their motherland,” Bhagwat said while delivering his annual Vijaya Dashmi Utsav address on the 89th foundation day of the RSS.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has more Facebook fans in the US than most current members of Congress, governors and other political candidates, according to a media report.

Modi’s American Facebook base of 170,529 as of Wednesday is larger than all but 21 American elected officials and current candidates, the New York Times reported citing Socialbakers, a site that tracks social media accounts.

Jayalalithaa not made any demands for luxury: Jail official

AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa is not getting VIP treatment, but being looked after as any other ordinary prisoner at the Parapanna Agrahara Central prison where she is lodged after conviction in the disproportionate assets case, according to a top jail official.

“Madam (Jayalalithaa) is getting no VIP treatment. She is being treated as any other prisoner at Parapanna Agrahara,” DIG Prisons P M Jaisimha told PTI here.

Indian men win seventh kabaddi gold at Asiad

Indian men’s team edged Iran in a nerve-racking final to win its seventh consecutive kabaddi gold medal at the Asian Games here Friday.

India, who have won every single gold since men’s kabaddi was introduced in 1990 in Beijing, trailed Iran for the majority of the match but came back strongly to win 27-25 at the Songdo Global University Gymnasium.

A brilliant second half, at the beginning of which they trailed Iran by eight points, saw the Indians outscore their opponents 14-4 to edge them by just two points to clinch gold.

Ravi K. Chandran, who has worked as a cinematographer in commercial as well as art-house films such as “Agneepath” and “Black”, says as a filmmaker he favours commercial cinema as he grew up idolising Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan.

“I prefer commercial films because I grew up watching films of MGR (M.G. Ramachandran) and Rajinikanth. In Hindi, it’s been Amitabh Bachchan’s films. I never liked art cinema, but I watch it only to learn the craft,” Chandran told IANS.

Resveratrol, an antioxidant derived from grapes and found in wine, can inhibit growth of the bacteria that causes acne, a new research shows.

Researchers from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) also found that combining resveratrol with a common acne medication – benzoyl peroxide – may enhance the drug’s ability to kill the bacteria and could translate into new treatments.

Delhi HC notice to BCI for derecognising DU’s Law Faculty

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Bar Council of India (BCI) and Delhi Bar Council (DBC) on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking to quash the BCI’s order last month that law graduates who passed out from the three centres of Delhi University’s Law Faculty this year cannot be enrolled as advocates.

A division bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice RS Endlaw sought response from BCI and DBC by November 05 on a PIL filed by Vijay Kumar Chaurasia, an assistant professor at the Law Faculty.

Sparking a controversy, music legend KJ Yesudas on Thursday said he resented women wearing jeans, saying this went against Indian culture.

“Women should not cause trouble to others by wearing jeans….What should be covered should be covered,” Yesudas said at a function organised by a voluntary organisation in connection with the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram.

Cherry juice may help fight gout: Study

Drinking cherry juice concentrate may help patients beat gout, according to new research.

Tart cherries have long been researched for their association with pain relief ranging from gout and arthritis joint pain to exercise-related muscle pain, researchers said.

The study is the first to report consumption of Montmorency tart cherries caused changes in uric acid metabolism, which can have an impact on joint pain.

The study also detected increases in specific anthocyanin compounds in the bloodstream after consuming tart cherries.

Govt planning to sell 5% stake in RCF next fiscal

The government is planning to divest at least 5 percent stake in state-run Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) in 2015-16, sources said.

“There are plans to divest at least 5 percent stake in the company (RCF) in the next fiscal, which could be raised to 10 percent,” a highly-placed source said.

The government at present owns 80 percent stake in the company, while remaining 20 percent is with the public and institutions. LIC holds 6.45 percent, the biggest stake by stakeholder other than other than promoters.

Khammam to have Urdu as its second official language

The T-government is contemplating to add Khammam also in the list of districts where Urdu is declared as second official language.

At present, in nine districts of the State, Urdu enjoys the second official language status.

Deputy CM Mohammed Mehmood Ali looked keen on this matter and at his instance; a proposal has been moved by the Minorities Welfare Department. A decision is likely to be taken when Mr. Ali returns from Saudi Arabia where he has gone to perform Haj.

New Pension, Ration cards from Nov

Fresh pension and ration cards are going to be issue from November as the T-Government is planning bring in complete transparency into various schemes designed for poorer sections.

Civil Supplies Minister Etela Rajender and Cabinet sub-committee emphasised on issuing new cards in place of the existing ones to ensure zero pilferage.

Talking to media, the minister said applications would be invited from eligible beneficiaries of PDS and pension schemes till October 15.

MHA serves notices to 10,331 NGOs for not filing returns

The Home Ministry has served notices to more than 10,000 NGOs receiving foreign funds for failing to submit their mandatory annual returns for three consecutive years from 2009 to 2012.

On scrutiny of records, it has been found that the mandatory annual returns for the years 2009-2010, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 have not been received from these associations. Notices are being sent to these associations, the Home Ministry said in its notice.
