AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa, who is lodged in Parapana Agrahara prison here after being convicted in an illegal assets case, is keeping good health and there was no need for any panic, a top Karnataka police official said here.

“I appeal to the people of Tamil Nadu not to panic. Madam Jayalalithaa is keeping good health,” DIG of Prisons M Jaisimha said, seeking to scotch speculations about her well being.

Her blood pressure and sugar levels are normal, he said.

Conservation campaigners have let out the warning that due to poaching of ivory, elephants and rhinos could be wiped out within the next two decades.

Melatonin intake may help combat obesity, diabetes

Chronic consumption of melatonin, a hormone found in animals, plants, and microbes, helps combat obesity and type-two diabetes, says a study.

“Melatonin is abundant in vegetables, spices, herbs, tea, coffee, fruit, seeds and nuts. This is one of the main reasons why these foods are healthy,” said lead researcher Ahmad Agil, a professor at University of Granada in Spain.

The study involved several experiments conducted on Zucker obese rats.

Dengue claims its first victim in Delhi this season

An eight-year-old boy has become the first victim of dengue in the national capital this year after he succumbed to the mosquito-borne infection.

The boy Rishi Qaddafi, a resident of South Delhi, died of dengue on Friday at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

“In this case, the child was already suffering from leukaemia (blood cancer) and had developed dengue,” said Dr Dhiren Gupta, senior consultant, Pediatric intensive care and Pediatric Pulmonology.

NASA observatory spots giant filament on the Sun

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, which keeps a tab on the sun 24 hours a day, has observed a snaking, extended filament of solar material on the front portion of the sun, NASA said in a statement.The SDO has observed the gigantic filament for several days as it rotated around with the sun.

If straightened out, the filament would reach almost across the whole sun, about one million miles or 100 times the size of Earth, the statement added.

Immune cells from old mouse lungs fought tuberculosis bacteria as effectively as cells from young mice after lung inflammation was reduced by ibuprofen, researchers from Ohio State University found.

The ibuprofen had no effect on the immune response to TB in young mice, the study found.

6-year-old girl brutally stabbed to death

A six-year-old girl was found murdered with multiple stab wounds in Chaksu town of the district today.

Shijen went missing from her house yesterday afternoon, police said, adding that her body was found today near a pond, about one km away from the house.

“She was stabbed to death as the body has injury marks in head and other parts.

“Reason of the murder is not known,” Station House Officer (SHO) Chaksu Hemraj said, adding that the possibility of rape has been ruled out.

No arrest was made so far and the matter is under investigation, Chaksu Hemraj said.

The dawn-to-dusk bandh called by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in protest against the conviction of J Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets case disrupted normal life in Puducherry on Saturday.

The bandh commenced from 6 am today in protest against the ‘false case’ imposed on former Tamil Nadu chief minister and her ‘wrongful imprisonment’.

Buses went off the roads while shops, business establishments, petrol pumps and cinema houses remained closed in the union territory as part of the bandh, police said.

Rape accused dies in hospital following suicide attempt

An undertrial rape accused, who was admitted to hospital after alleged suicide attempt, has died here in southeastern Jhalawar district, police said today. 25-year-old Mukesh Tanwar was admitted to the hospital in a “critical condition” on Tuesday afternoon after he attempted suicide with a long piece of cloth in the barrack’s toilet for prisoners in the district session court, where he was brought for an appearance, police said.

Tanwar died in the district hospital last night during treatment, Station House Officer (SHO), Kotwali police station Sunil Kumar said.

New laboratory at MIT to analyse Twitter messages

Twitter will provide the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with $10 million over the next five years to analyse every tweet that has gone out since the network was launched in 2006. The MIT Media Lab will use the money to establish and operate a Laboratory for Social Machines.
