Toddler slips from mother’s arms, dies

A 15-month-old toddler died after she slipped from the arms of her mother while riding an escalator in a mall here, police said today.

The baby girl and her relatives are from Mallappuram and were on a visit to Lulu mall here yesterday. The mishap occurred when the child was in the arms of her mother who was taking an escalator to the second floor.

The baby, Zoya Fathima, suffered severe head injuries in the accident. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and then taken to Amrita hospital where she was declared brought dead.

SC dismisses plea against removal Sai Baba’s idols

The Supreme Court Monday dismissed a petition by an NGO seeking direction to the central government to step in to prevent the removal of the Sri Sai Baba idols from temples as urged by Dwarka Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati.

The apex court bench headed by Justice T.S. Thakur said it was a matter of faith and could not be judicially managed. The court, while declining to interfere in the matter, also reminded the petitioner Saidham Charitable Trust that the law and order was a state subject.

Pitt pays tribute to Jolie through T-shirt

Actor Brad Pitt paid tribute to his wife and actress Angelina Jolie with a handmade T-shirt.

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” actor was spotted wearing a white T-shirt with a hand-drawn picture of Disney film’s villain “Maleficent” on it, reports eonline.com.

Jolie portrayed the character of the evil witch in the film with the same name, released this summer.

The 50-year-old actor wore the T-shirt when he was walking with his family at an airport in London Oct 9.

Cyclone Hudhud: Andhra stays on alert, heavy rain expected

A day after a very severe cyclonic storm Hudhud battered the Andhra coast with heavy rain leaving five persons dead, the state government is investing its energy and resources on restoration and relief works even as it remained on alert in view of heavy rainfall warning.

Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu’s Cabinet is expected to be in Visakhapatnam as the government focuses on bringing life back to normal in the districts of Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram which bore the brunt of the cyclonic fury.

AIIMS to ink MoU with Osaka University

AIIMS will ink a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Monday with the Osaka University, Japan, to establish a collaborative research and development programme for low-cost surgical devices.

The initiative is part of the joint statement issued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Premier Shinzo Abe, during the former’s visit to Japan to enhance cooperation in the field of medical devices.

Cyclone Hudhud: 558 people evacuated by NDRF, Vizag runway clearance work underway

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Sunday evacuated around 558 people after Cyclone Hudhud made its landfall in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha yesterday.

A dead body of a one year old child was also recovered from the debris.

In order to resume the operation of aircrafts, work of runway clearance at Vizag airport is underway at the Navy airport- INS Dega, according to a navy statement.

The official statement also indicated that both the runways at naval air station INS Dega will be fit for flying by 2.30 p.m. today.

President Pranab Mukherjee to meet Norway’s King, other dignitaries today

President Pranab Mukherjee will meet Norway’s head of state King Herald fifth and other dignitaries today as part of his state visit to the Nordic nation.

President Mukherjee who reached Oslo on Sunday was accorded a traditional welcome on the first leg of his six-day visit to Norway and Finland.

He is the first ever Indian head of state to visit Norway. During the President’s visit, India and Norway are expected to reach an agreement on nuclear safety measures. Other agreements to be inked are in the fields of education, trade and earth sciences.

China’s exports jump 15.3% to $213.7 billion in September

China’s exports saw the fastest growth in 19 months, expanding by 15.3 percent from a year ago to USD 213.7 billion in September, a report said.

Imports increased 7 percent year on year to USD 182.7 billion and total foreign trade volume rose 11.3 percent to USD 396.4 billion, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said.

The growth rate in imports in September also marked the highest level since December 2013, GAC report said.

Trade surplus in September more than doubled from last year to USD 31 billion, compared with USD 49.8 billion seen in August.

Tatas’ Land Rover only Indian-owned brand in world’s top 100

Tata group’s Land Rover has forayed into an elite club of world’s 100 most valuable brands as the only Indian-owned entity, while iconic Apple has retained its top slot with nearly USD 119 billion valuation.

Land Rover, an iconic British car brand owned by Indian conglomerate Tatas, has been ranked 91st with a brand value of USD 4.47 billion and is one of the five new entrants on this annual list compiled by leading brand consultancy Interbrand.

CBI probe against IRDA, Reliance General Insurance

CBI has started a probe into alleged undervaluation of penalty to the tune of nearly Rs 17,500 crore on Reliance General Insurance Company Limited by the officials of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) in 2009.

The agency has named Reliance General Insurance Company in its inquiry and “unknown officials” of the Authority, CBI sources here said.

Sensex falls 159 points; trading over 26,130 level

The benchmark BSE Sensex fell over 159 points in early trade on Monday on continued capital outflows by foreign funds and selling by retail investors after industrial production growth slowed to five-month low in August amid a weak trend overseas.

The 30-share barometer declined by 159.35 points, or 0.61 percent, to 26,138.03 with realty, metal, auto, capital goods and banking stocks, leading the fall.

The index had plunged 339.90 points in the previous session on Friday.

Constable shot dead, another injured in attack in Outer Delhi

In second such attack within three days, a Delhi Police constable was killed while another was seriously injured when some persons opened fire on the police men who had confronted them on finding their activities suspicious in the wee hours in Outer Delhi’s Vijay Vihar.

Constable Jagbir died on the spot while his colleague Narendra was critically injured in the incident and is battling for life at a city hospital, police said.

1 red bell pepper (seeded and quartered)
1 eggplant (cut into slices)
2 tblspns olive oil

Heat a large pan over medium-high heat.

PepsiCo’s India revenue grows in double digits

PepsiCo India’s revenue grew in double digits for nine months ended September 6, 2014 making the country amongst the fastest growing emerging markets for the global beverages and snack giant.

“Our developing and emerging markets business has proven to be resilient with high single-digit organic revenue growth year-to-date, including double-digit growth in Egypt and India,” PepsiCo Inc Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi said in an earnings call.

Top five firms lose Rs 42,519.88 cr in market valuation

The market valuation of top-five Indian companies fell by Rs 42,519.88 crore last week, with IT major TCS taking the biggest hit.

While TCS, ITC, CIL, HDFC Bank and Sun Pharma saw losses in their valuation, ONGC, RIL, Infosys, SBI and ICICI Bank made gains.

The market capitalisation (m-cap) of TCS plunged by Rs 18,911.52 crore to Rs 5,24,772.61 crore.
ITC’s m-cap tanked by Rs 8,691.94 crore to Rs 2,81,610.82 crore, while Sun Pharma lost Rs 8,626.15 crore to Rs 1,69,582 crore.

Nissan launches special edition Terrano priced upto Rs 13.13 lakh

Japanese carmaker Nissan on Friday launched a special edition of its mid-sized sports utility vehicle Terrano priced up to Rs 13,13,725 (ex-showroom Delhi) to commemorate the vehicle’s first anniversary in India.
